Vista SP1 serves up its own sets of problems

Every technology site is full of information regarding Vista SP1, even our own. But, not everyone is happy with the way it performs, for some, entirely new problems have cropped up after installation.

While Vista SP1 will not fix existing compatibility problems with older applications and hardware, it can improve the reliability of most systems but may introduce new complications.

The Daytona Beach Journal Blog reports in its test that one laptop was upgraded to Vista SP1 without problems but the test desktop reported that Vista was no longer valid after the installation and wanted a new license key.

VS2008 SP1 and .NET FX Beta Performance Improvements

David Berg: Visual Studio 2008 SP1 is packed with new features, major updates to frameworks, and fixes. So much so that with everything installed (including x64 and ia86 support) you would need to download and install about 1GB of updates. Which brings us to the first and most important performance improvement you only download what you need!

VS2008 SP1 includes a new installation / update engine. You just download the installer, which then analyzes your system installation, and only downloads the components you need. Thus a default installation of VS2008 Team System will only download about 600mb (and less still if you dont have all the default components installed). Download performance will vary substantially based on your internet connection and network contention; however, it generally outperforms an IE file download, and will automatically restart in the middle if your network connection drops out and comes back. (However, if you cancel the install, it will restart at the beginning.)

Microsoft comes clean on Vista SP1 driver and vLite issues

As you may have been aware having certain drivers installed on Vista will prevent SP1 from installing. Microsoft had not exactly been forthcoming on which drivers but has now made the list available to the public.

The company listed the affected drivers in a support article. It consists of mostly audio and display drivers but there are warnings for fingerprint readers as well.

Additionally, users are warned against using vLite to strip features out of a Vista installation and install using it. Microsoft says that could also prevent the installation of Vista SP1. The previous support article lists possible causes and solutions.

Office 2007 SP1 Installation/Slipstream Guide

Some of you may be wondering how to do a clean install of Office 2007 using an Office 2007 RTM image along with SP1 at the same time. As you may know, Office 2007 makes use of the Updates folder in the installation media to install any new updates that it finds in the folder however updates have to be in the .msp file format for them to be recognized. Since the Office 2007 SP1 update file is delivered in the .exe format, an extra step is required before being able to proceed:

First, you should copy the contents of the Office 2007 RTM image to a temporary folder. For our example we're using C:O2007Temp. We have also copied the Office 2007 SP1 Update file (office2007sp1-kb936982-fullfile-en-us.exe) to the D: drive.

Then, using the Run command in Windows XP/Vista (WinKey+R), run the following command:

replacing D: with wherever you stored the Office 2007 SP1 update file and C:O2007Temp with wherever you stored the Office 2007 RTM files. After agreeing to the Microsoft Software License Terms, SP1 will be extracted to C:O2007TempUpdates.

That's it! Just start the setup for Office 2007 and the updates for SP1 will then be picked up and installed during the setup. The same method applies to any other Office 2007 SP1 update.

Windows Vista SP1 Prerequisite Releases Coming Up

Microsoft Update Team: This week we're releasing two more prerequisites for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 that will be coming later this quarter. We wanted to let you know about them because they are both marked as Important updates (and theyre a little different than usual).

KB938371 is a multi-component update that supports the successful install of SP1 and allows it to be uninstalled. KB937287 updates the Windows Vista Servicing Stack. Both updates (required before SP1 will be offered via Windows Update) are being made available now to reduce the number of reboots and make installation of the service pack easier.

Even if you're not ready to install the service pack once it's released, you'll want to install these updates because they'll help increase performance and reduce failures for the installation of other updates.
