Shift Linux: A New Direction

Since its incarnation in 2006, Shift Linux has had an ambitious team behind it. We have always strived to be "more than just another linux distribution", a goal which has never been more important than it is now. Over the next little while, Shift will be reborn and redefined, moving farther away from traditional Linux roots, and into something newer. Linux will always be our core, but on top of that, we need to use new technologies, both those that exist and those which we can only imagine, to build something fresh. Today, Shift Linux will move forward. We have several new goals that are being set. First of all, Shift needs to be streamlined.

Apple ad banned over iPhone 3G speed claims

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has told Apple to pull a recent TV ad for its iPhone 3G after receiving complaints that it was exaggerating the speed of the device's data connection. It's what helps you get the news, really fast. Find your way, really fast. And download pretty much anything, really fast. The new iPhone 3G.

Shift Linux to become based on Arch Linux

As part of our new direction, I am proud to announce that Shift Linux will be moving away from Ubuntu, and instead switching over to Arch Linux. There are many reasons for this, including a more customizable distribution for us as developers to work with, and a faster and more streamlined start point. In my letter to the community about our new direction, I said that Ubuntu would suit our needs fine, and when the time felt right, we would consider a move. Since then, the outpouring of support from the Neowin community has been unbelievable, and so we decided to take advantage of the moment.

US Internet speeds still slow compared to the rest of the world

A survey by the Communications Workers of America indicates that the median download speed for US Internet connections has changed little, and remains far slower than the rates experienced in other developed nations.

The typical US Internet connection delivers 2.3 Mbps downloads, according to the CWA's annual survey -- 400 Kbps over the previous year.

Compare this to Japan, whether the median download speed now stands at 63 Mbps. South Korea also is much higher at 49 Mbps, as is Finland (21 Mbps), France (17 Mbps), and even Canada, which has a median speed of 7.6 Mbps.

Review: Shift Linux 0.5 (RC2) - Neowin's Linux

Our Neowin Shift Linux Developer and moderator Barney, pointed me to a review by Sunny Talks Tech blogger Saptarshi Purkayastha on the latest release of Shift Linux 0.5 RC2. It's a great read for anyone who hasn't tried the Live CD yet and in my opinion quite a flattering review coming from an established Linux user.
Snip from the review: "I've been a Linux user for 10+ years and have contributed a lot of code and bug reports to different distros (distributions) over time. Just lately, I heard about a new distro over at Neowin.net called ShiftLinux. It is a community effort from Neowin users to create a Linux distribution... And as soon as I heard, I wondered why another distribution? But soon realized, more people coming to the Linux world, would mean a better future for Linux.

Based on Morphix Linux, Shift is Debian based and I decided to try the latest ShiftLinux 0.5 RC2. Most stuff are going to be the same between this one and 0.5 Final to b released on 10th Nov,2007. I prefer to use KDE, and hence got the KDE version. The distro can be downloaded from Neowin's server or via Bittorrent. I used Bittorrent to download but to my disappointment, found only 2 seeds. I was expecting a few more seeds (it's a yr old, so may be the initial excitement is over). But the download was pretty fast."
He also mentions the widely misconceived myth that we are not just a Windows site , we have since the beginning always supported and enjoyed both Linux and Apple members on the forums, we publish news on the two subjects and of course welcome and support the Neowin Shift Linux project.

UK a nation of broadband speed freaks

The UK is a nation of broadband speed freaks, according to figures released by broadband comparison site Top 10 Broadband. Based on over 90,000 tests captured in March, the monitoring site said that download speeds seems to be the primary factor in deciding customer satisfaction.

The top three fastest providers were also the three highest rated in terms of customer satisfaction. O2 topped the rankings in terms of speed and customer ratings, with an average speed of 6.41Mbps and customer rating of 3.82 out of 5. Second and third for speed and rating were Be and Virgin Media respectively.

First look: The HTC Shift

This has to be UMPC scoop of the year. Hugo got hold of the HTC Shift for a few days and had the chance to test it out and make a video. At last we have some REAL info on the device:

I had The HTC Shift for a little over 60 hours and was able to play with many of its great features, which include Pocket PC, HSDPA, Vista Business, Tilt Touchscreen, QWERTY keyboard and more. It is an incredible device with many possibilities, this video will hopefully showcase some of that. I managed to literally squeeze it into a very tight schedule I am running at present and did what I could to cover off some of the burning questions folks might have.

Political Shift in Congress May Mean Delays in FCC Issues

With Tuesday's elections giving the U.S. Congress a Democratic bent from its previous slant to the Republican side, that means the shift will probably end the prospects for passage of a telecom reform bill.

The bill would give broader wireless federal pre-emption and would shift more regulative issues to the FCC and states. With the AT&T and Bellsouth merger approval being deadlocked in a 2-2 vote at this time, I'm not sure how the recent election results will affect the vote in the FCC if at all, but we'll all see soon.
