Shift Linux: A New Direction

Since its incarnation in 2006, Shift Linux has had an ambitious team behind it. We have always strived to be "more than just another linux distribution", a goal which has never been more important than it is now. Over the next little while, Shift will be reborn and redefined, moving farther away from traditional Linux roots, and into something newer. Linux will always be our core, but on top of that, we need to use new technologies, both those that exist and those which we can only imagine, to build something fresh. Today, Shift Linux will move forward. We have several new goals that are being set. First of all, Shift needs to be streamlined.

Shift Linux 0.6 Released

We have released Shift Linux 0.6 today. There are two versions released at this time: Shift Linux 0.6 Gnome and Shift Linux 0.6 Lite (for older computers). Shift Linux Lite contains two less resource hogging desk managers (XFCE-4 and Fluxbox), but will have a full compliment of packages and utilities. Both versions of Shift Linux 0.6 are fully installable (tested and verified).

Shift Linux 0.6.5 Released

Shift Linux 0.6.5 is the first public preview release of Shift Linux One. The version number may be confusing, but the team is focused on a solid 1.0 release soon. Shift Linux comes in 3 different flavors, Gnome, Lite, and KDE. All 3 are based on brand-new Ubuntu Hardy Beta 1 packages.

We have also added in our own customizations such as the Shift Original theme in Gnome, present in 0.5 and 0.6, Shift Linux wallpaper, and other packages not included in the Ubuntu release, such as Gnome-Do, as seen in the screenshots. This release is installable. Shift is a free, GPL-based Linux distribution that can be freely distributed or modified.

Shift Linux to become based on Arch Linux

As part of our new direction, I am proud to announce that Shift Linux will be moving away from Ubuntu, and instead switching over to Arch Linux. There are many reasons for this, including a more customizable distribution for us as developers to work with, and a faster and more streamlined start point. In my letter to the community about our new direction, I said that Ubuntu would suit our needs fine, and when the time felt right, we would consider a move. Since then, the outpouring of support from the Neowin community has been unbelievable, and so we decided to take advantage of the moment.

Political Shift in Congress May Mean Delays in FCC Issues

With Tuesday's elections giving the U.S. Congress a Democratic bent from its previous slant to the Republican side, that means the shift will probably end the prospects for passage of a telecom reform bill.

The bill would give broader wireless federal pre-emption and would shift more regulative issues to the FCC and states. With the AT&T and Bellsouth merger approval being deadlocked in a 2-2 vote at this time, I'm not sure how the recent election results will affect the vote in the FCC if at all, but we'll all see soon.

Music DRM 'dead by next summer'

Killing DRM is saving digital music, reckons British retailer 7Digital. The company says DRM-free music sales now outnumber sales of DRM-enumbered music by 4:1 , and credits EMI with the shift.

Removing the locks and keys also helps shift albums, with 70 per cent of MP3 sales by value being full albums.

A recent report prepared for the British music industry by Capgemini suggested that it was the "format shift" to single track sales, or "unbundling" the bundle of the album, that was the most responsible for revenue decline since 2004.

Neowin Shift Linux 0.5 Final Released

Shift Linux is a Linux project that was created by the Neowin community. Based on Morphix Linux, Shift is Debian based live CD; therefore it has access to all of the software and applications as other Debian distributions. Several versions of Shift Linux have been developed to produce for computers with lighter or more robust hardware configurations. We have produced Shift with Fluxbox as the predominant desktop manager for lower resource computers, and Shift with Gnome and KDE desktop managers, for heartier machines.

The Shift Linux live CD and the links to the Neowin technical website are designed to give the user an experience of being part of the Neowin community as well as having a simple, easy-to-use Live CD that can be installed to your hard drive, if you enjoy the way our distribution works. Shift is a free, GPL-based Linux distribution that can be freely distributed or modified.

Shift Linux 0.5 has all of the most commonly used packages that are available and is designed to be extremely fast as a live CD. Our newly designed website is full of information about Shift: FAQs, wallpapers and theme designs, updates, contests. Please feel free to browse and comment on our content.

The project team consists of members with a wide variety of experiences and talents. Each has contributed in his / her own way. Whether team members have worked on the distribution itself, or the Shift website, their efforts have been dedicated to creating this quality product.

Comments on how we can improve this distribution, and bug reports can be posted on our forum (at Neowin).

Piper believes leadership shift at Apple is underway

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, one of the most outspoken and trusted experts on all things Apple, told clients on Wednesday that Steve Jobs' absence from this year's Macworld Expo signals "the beginning of a shift in leadership roles" at the company.

"Steve Jobs remains CEO of Apple, however, yielding this year's Macworld keynote to Phil Schiller, along with the participation of Tim Cook and Phil Schiller at the October event is, in our view, a clear message that a leadership shift is underway," he said.

London to have satellites that monitor your speed

In a trial that can only be described as Big Brotherly, London is going is going to start trials of attempting to stop speeders from space. The basic idea works around that the vehicles are equipped with information about speed limits for public roads. A satellite will monitor the speed of the car vs. the pre-installed data to determine if the car is speeding. If the car is found to be speeding then one of two things can happen. The car can either be slowed down by the satellite (voluntary mode) or the car can alert you that you need to slow down but won't actually adjust the vehicles speed (advisory mode).

Shift Linux Art Contest

Shift Linux, the Linux distribution developed by Neowin users, is putting out a call to all users of Neowin to help make wallpapers, icons, bootscreens, and themes for its upcoming 0.5 release. Whether you will use Shift or not, this is a quick way you can help us out.

We will be holding an art contest using all content submitted to our Shift Linux Customization Center by August 20 at 11:59 PM GMT. On August 21, the voting will open, and everyone on Neowin will be encouraged to vote for their favorites. We'll have another update for you at that time.

So, anyone who is interested should get started, since we're a bit pressed for time. We appreciate all submissions, even if they are after the contest deadline, especially if we have nothing else in that category (for example, if you have the only icon set completed, but it's not submitted until September, we'll probably use that).
