6.2.2008Windows 7 RC completed, build 7100
Company insiders and Wzor have confirmed that 7100 is the official Windows 7 RC build. 7100.0.winmain_win7rc.090421-1700 was compiled on Tuesday and
has reportedly been handed out to OEM partners and TAP gold customers. Earlier this month we reported that build 7077 had leaked online and that
Microsoft were pushing towards a 7100 RC release. Microsoft recently published details about a public RC due for May 5th. We expect MSDN/TechNet
customers to receive the bits within the next week if the company is still targeting May 5th. According to reports, 7115.0.winmain.090421-1650 is the
latest build internally at the time of writing.

23.04.2009Windows 7 build 7077 leaks
According to several reports from Neowin members, Windows 7 build 7077 has leaked to various torrent sites. Named as an RC escrow build it's
likely that 7077.0.090404-1255 is the RC that will be modified to 7100 and distributed widely in May. Microsoft confirmed the 7100 path yesterday on
its Engineering Windows 7 blog by advising users to modify the MinClient build number from 7100 to 7000 in order to enable beta to RC upgrades. It is
now expected that Microsoft will name 7100 as the RC build and builds 7105 onwards will be the ongoing development branched towards RTM.

Windows 7 Driver Compatibility Evidence Seen
A day after someone noticed a "Windows 7 Client" category popping up on Windows Server Update Services, another curious enthusiast on the Neowin
forums has also noticed a sudden prevalence of "Windows 7 Client" drivers on Microsoft's Update Catalog - the online library of drivers which
Windows uses to automatically install.
A simple search for "Windows 7 Client" reveals more than 1000 drivers already available. These drivers range from the big brands
from Nvidia, ATI, Intel and Broadcom to even miscellaneous display drivers. Whilst it is true all drivers approved after June 1 should have been
tested on Windows 7, most of these drivers date back to early 2007 suggesting most drivers have just been carried over from the latest WHQL release.

Reports: Windows 7 has reached build 7079
Wzor is once again reporting that the Windows 7 winmain_win7rc branch has reached 7079. Yesterday build 7077 leaked via BitTorrent and we speculated
this could be the build that would be "renamed" to 7100 for the RC. It appears that isn't the case and Microsoft has built 7078.0.090406-1758
and 7079.0.090407-1902 over the last few days. We still expect Microsoft to name the RC build shortly and all bets are on 7100. Last month Microsoft
hinted at a May public release for the RC.

Windows 7 Beta 1 has problems with XP Display Drivers (XDDM)
I've been enjoying Windows 7 so much over the past week, that I've been evangelizing it to all of my friends. One friend with a Dell Inspiron

drivers for this card out of the box. I feel that Windows 7 should have all of the same in-box drivers as Vista, and it's a bummer that this one
is not included.

Windows 7 RC gets its first bug, and it's a doozy

Yesterday, Microsoft published Knowledge Base article 970789, which provides details of a problem that affects the 32-bit (x86)
English-language version of Windows 7 build 7100. The problem, in short, is that the installer incorrectly sets access control lists (ACLs) on the

Driver Signing changes between Windows XP and Vista...
Chris Taylor: In XP the driver rankings were determined in the following way as discussed in the "Windows Vista Resource Kit":
-
In-box drivers are given first preference.
- Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) signed drivers next.
- Unsigned drivers are
given lowest preference.
In Vista this algorithm was extended to include eight levels of digital signing:
- Microsoft
signed WHQL Certified Drivers.
- Microsoft signed in-box drivers (NT Build Lab Certified).
- Microsoft signed Windows Sustained
Engineering Certified drivers.
- Drivers that have been signed using Authenticode (Enterprise CA).
- Drivers that have been signed
using Authenticode (Class 3 CA Certified).
- Drivers that have been signed using Authenticode (MAKECERT.EXE Certified).
-
Microsoft signed WHQL Certified drivers for a down level Windows Operating system.
- Unsigned Drivers.
This behavior is
illustrated in setupapi.dev.log when determining which driver to install for a device.

NVIDIA Makes Laptop Graphics Drivers Available Online ... Finally
NVIDIA decided to give notebook users an early Christmas present today. It's a present notebook owners have kept on their wish lists since NVIDIA
first started making graphics processing units (GPUs) for notebooks ... downloadable drivers on the NVIDIA website.
For years now the only way laptop owners could
find notebook graphics drivers for NVIDIA GPUs was if the notebook manufacturer was kind enough to make the drivers available or to download
unofficial "hacked" drivers from various websites (drivers that were often hacked together based on desktop GPU drivers). Consumers need these
drivers in order to be able to take full advantage of the latest visual computing applications and games as well as to be able to restore GPU
functions after a fresh install of Windows.

Ever

product and wished Windows
would either just have the

- and new features and updates
will be forthcoming too. It's
about time! At the Windows
Vista Team Blog, Jim Allchin,
the Chief of Microsoft's
Vista development effort and
long-time Microsoft employee,
soon to retire after having
completed Vista at last, has
advised readers that Windows
Vista has more drivers
built-in at launch than any
previous version Windows.
While computer users
will always want to see if the
manufacturer has newer,
specific drivers that eke out
the best performance from
peripherals and hardware
add-ons, having as many
drivers native in Windows as
possible, and thousands of
additional new drivers
available on Windows Update
just has to be a good thing to
make life easier for computer

driver issues with XP and
earlier Windows versions.
Allchin tells us that
since Vista went RTM, an

now ready and waiting for you

your computer, although you
should naturally always try
loading the drivers that came
with your new hardware from CD

Windows 7 Release Candidate goes public... Oops
Tired of waiting for Microsoft to release the first (and likely only) release candidate of Windows 7? No worries, you can go and snatch it up now...
via torrents. Earlier today, build 7100 of Windows 7, the official Release Candidate build, leaked to the public.
While no new visual
elements stand out from previous builds, UI changes should no longer be expected this late in the game. Any changes from this point on will be, for
the most part, behind the scenes. One notable change however is Microsoft's decision to revert back to the previous active tile design for the
taskbar, as found in build 7068, as it no longer features the white hazy glow behind the icon.
The official release date of Windows 7 RC
is expected to be May 5th for the public, and slightly earlier for TechNet and MSDN subscribers.
Have you found anything new in this
build? Share it with us in our community forums...
Update: Microsoft now says the RC will be available to TechNet and MSDN subscribers on
April 30th.
