04.01.2006Dell Announces LED Flat Panel Monitors
Today, Dell announced their new line of LED backlit monitors, the G2210 (22") and the G2410 (24"). While these monitors do use LED backlighting
unlike the UltraSharp line, this new line uses lower quality display panels.
Both new displays feature a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, an
ambient light sensor, 5ms response time, and brightness of 250 cd/m2. Additionally, DVI-D and VGA connectors are included with each. HDCP will only be
available the 24" model. The two monitors have rather average resolutions, 1680x1050 on the 22" and 1980x1080 on the 24".
Reported
last month, Dell stated that they will be significantly reducing packaging materials. Living up to the claim, these monitors are 20% smaller and 28%
lighter than comparable monitors.
The two will be shipping in late February for $279 and $359.

09.01.2009Apple and ViewSonic Ready 17-inch Widescreen Monitors
LCD vendors such as ViewSonic
and Apple are set to launch
17-inch widescreen LCD
monitors by year-end or the
first quarter of 2007,
according to industry sources.
LCD monitor
vendors expect 17-inch
widescreen monitors to replace
entry-level and middle-range
15-inch and 17-inch LCD
monitors in the future. The
prices for 17-inch widescreen
monitors will not necessary be
higher than 17-inch 4:3 models
amid more efficient panel
cutting by makers, according
to the vendors.
Currently, LCD panel makers
such as HannStar Display and
China-based players have
launched 17-inch widescreen
panels in the market. A
fifth-generation (5G)
substrate from HannStar can be
cut into fifteen 17-inch
widescreen panels or fifteen
15-inch 4:3 conventional-sized
panels, the sources said.
According to
International Data Corporation
(IDC), widescreen LCD monitors
will account for 34% of the
overall monitor market in the
fourth quarter of 2007 with
19-inch widescreen monitors
being the largest segment
among all widescreen monitors.
The proportion of 19-inch and
17-inch widescreen monitors
will increase to 15.2% and
11.4%, respectively, by the
fourth quarter of next year,
the research firm added.

03.06.2008CRT Monitors Dying Off As LG, Samsung Mull Exit
The CRT monitor continues to die off, according to market figures released last week by DisplaySearch. In a related report, both LG and Samsung are
considering pulling out of CRT displays.
The analyst firm found that of the 45.4 million monitors sold during the second quarter,
just 4.6 million or 10.2 percent were CRTs. The firm found that CRT sales have dropped 11 percent in the second quarter alone, and by 46 percent
compared to the prior year. LCD monitors, meanwhile, represent 88.2 percent of overall sales, and have increased 34 percent versus a year ago. The
remainder went to all-in-one PCs.
With display manufacturers becoming more and more invested into LCDs, manufacturer commitment
for CRTs seems to be on the wane. The Korea Times
reported Monday that both LG and Samsung appear to be phasing out their CRT television lines, shifting their emphasis to LCDs.
Although CRT TVs and monitors are not interchangeable, they do use common components.

11.09.2007Widescreen Monitors' Increasing Appeal
Don't be surprised if the
next monitor you get from your
IT department is larger than
your current one, particularly
as more and more business
applications are adapted to
take advantage of widescreen
monitors. "We're starting to
see more business applications
being formatted for a wide
screen," said Rhoda
Alexander, director of monitor
research at iSuppli Corp. in
El Segundo, Calif. The market
research firm predicts that
worldwide shipments of
wide-format LCD monitors will
nearly quadruple from 9.1
million units in 2006 to 35.8
million units this year.
And businesses that
are buying widescreen monitors
may tend to pick 20-in. or
larger models instead of
19-in. ones because the bigger
size is a slightly better fit
for some applications,
according to Alexander. She
said that some documents will
default to a two-page spread
when displayed on a widescreen
monitor. But in a 19-in.
model, that page may be cut
off slightly, Alexander
said.

ViewSonic said recently that
its LCD monitors have won
certification for the Windows
Vista operating system (OS)
and Chi Mei will soon also
join the ranks of LCD monitor
vendors with Vista
certification, according to
the companies.
New
LCD monitors from ViewSonic
shipped since December are
compliant with Windows Vista,

the entry-level VA-series,
graphics-use VG-series,
professional-use VP-series and
design-oriented VX-series,
according to Alan Chang, vice

marketing.
Chi Mei
said it is applying for the
verification for Windows Vista
Premium and expects to receive
verification next week. Vista
will help stimulate

Mei said. For example, during
the IT Month expo held
recently in Taiwan, the sales
volume of its widescreen
models reached 65% of its
overall LCD monitor sales,
more than the
originally-expected 50%, the
maker said.

04.06.2008Windows 7 M1 Build 6574.1
Chinese site ThinkNext has once again released screenshots of another build of Windows 7 that is currently being worked on by Microsoft.
Amongst the changes are some refining with Windows Explorer and the addition of a Windows Health Center that provides alerts and monitors the
systems health state. Microsoft is currently testing Windows 7 internally and is widely expected to announce further details at its PDC (professional
developers conference) in October this year. The company is expected to ship Windows 7 in Q1 2010.
The build was posted without the full
build string, which leads us to believe that a partner purposely violated the NDA with the Redmond based software company, and made it difficult to
trace back to a specific developer lab. As quoted from the site below:
"This time it’s the 2nd release of Windows 7 Milestone 1.
Version 6.1 (build 6574.1.{SECRET}). The {SECRET} here means I won’t expose detail. No, even Milestone 1 isn’t a single release. Microsoft
releases multiple versions of M1 with different minor version numbers. Well, for me it is the 2nd one I’ve gotten but I’ve no idea about
how many releases Microsoft did before. I’ll use Win7 M1 R2, which stands for Windows 7 Milestone 1 Release 2, to describe it in the following.
Please be noted, ‘Release 2’ is my naming convention, not Microsoft’s."
