Microsoft Research demonstrates laptop-compatible multi-touch displays

The word of 2007 is "multi-touch". Its everywhere, from the iPhone to the Microsoft Surface. We werent happy with just one finger on the touch-sensitive screens, we wanted to put all 10 fingers and probably some toes on too, and multi-touch was born.

Notebook players paying close attention to multi-touch

Hewlett-Packard (HP) is planning to stir up the touch panel notebook market with multi-touch technology at the end of this year, and with Windows 7, which according to Microsoft will include features to take advantage of multi-touch capabilities, on the horizon, notebook industry players are paying close attention to the development of multi-touch technologies.

Touch panel tablet PCs are mostly niche market products currently and usually single-touch only due to costs and limited software support. However, notebook industry players believe multi-touch has the potential to take off in the mainstream market thanks to handset devices such as the iPhone. Windows 7 will also be key for promoting multi-touch since it enables multi-touch interfaces as part of the Windows operating system, the sources noted.

Android's lack of multi-touch due to Apple?

Google's move into the mobile market space gave the consumer another choice for a mobile platform. It's is also no secret that Apple and Google work closely together on products and according to one source Apple told Google to not include multi-touch on its Android platform. While it would be easy to ignore this "source" there seems to be quite a bit of credibility to the matter. Firstly, the G1 and Android do support multi-touch; if the phone has the hardware and software backing for the technology why wouldn't they include it? The source claims that Apple asked Google to forgo including the technology.

Introducing the Microsoft Touch Pack for Windows 7

At Wall Street Journal's D: All Things Digital conference about a year ago today, Julie Larson-Green first introduced Walt Mossberg to Windows 7 and its multi-touch capabilities, which we call Windows Touch. While weve been working on bringing natural user interface to you in many Microsoft products, we first introduced multi-touch in Microsoft Surface. Since then, the Windows and Surface development teams have been collaborating closely on bringing multi-touch to Windows, and last year demoed a few applications they created to run on Windows 7. Today, we thought it would be fitting on this śanniversaryť of first talking about Windows Touch to introduce the Microsoft Touch Pack for Windows 7.

Windows 7 will support multi-touch

Last night at the WSJ's All Things Digital conference, Microsoft revealed what Steve Ballmer called "the smallest snippet" of Windows 7 - multi-touch support.

The multi-touch support is made possible through technology developed by the Microsoft Surface team; with some of the touch-oriented apps that were presented seeming to closely resemble what we've seen of Surface to date. Besides this, a few other minor changes can be seen, such as a reworked taskbar.

Apparently, Microsoft are planning to rework Seven's interface with a seamless multi-touch experience in mind.

Philips to Unveil 52-inch Multi-Touch LCD at CES

LG.Philips LCD is planning to unveil a 52-inch multi-touch LCD (liquid crystal display) at next week's Consumer Electronics Show, it said Monday. The screen is 5-inches larger than one it recently showed in Japan and is the largest display of its type in the world, the company said.

Multi-touch screens differ from conventional touchpanels because they allow input from more than one spot on the screen so, for example, an image can be manipulated from opposite corners. Probably the most famous current example of the technology is the display on Apple's hit iPhone and iPod Touch devices.

Video: Microsoft demonstrates Multi-touch in Windows 7

Chris Flores: <...> Touch is quickly becoming a common way of directly interacting with software and devices. Touch-enabled surfaces are popping up everywhere including laptop touch pads, cell phones, remote controls, GPS devices, and more. What becomes even more compelling is when this experience is delivered to the PC -on a wide variety of Windows notebooks, in all-in-one PC's, as well as in external monitors. In working with our broad ecosystem of hardware and software manufactures, we're excited to be showing some of the great work and investments we are working on in Windows 7.

Tonight, at this year's D:All Things Digital conference, Julie Larson-Green showed Walt Mossberg how a few of the multi-touch innovations first previewed in Surface will ultimately enhance the next version of Windows. As soon as the video of Julie's demo is posted I will update this post. In the meantime, an abridged version of the demo can be found below. Please note, the applications you will see are for demonstration purposes only...but it's all Windows 7 underneath.

Multi-touch LG KF900 Prada is launched

The latest phone from LG, the KF900, may be able to steal marketshare from the iPhone. It has been revealed that the phone sports a capacitive display allowing it to achieve multi-touch input. This comes after news of the Blackberry Storm having similar functionality. The specifications, however, show it having a smaller 3.0 inch screen with a 240x400 resolution showing the phone is possibly catering for those who prefer a smaller sized fashion accessory. In typical LG fashion, this smartphone also includes an elegant design but with the drawback of low battery life. Where it improves upon the iPhone is mainly with the five megapixel camera and the spacious slide-out full qwerty keyboard.
