Siemens Raided on Suspicions of Embezzlement, Bribery

Reports have shown that police and prosecutors have raided Siemens AG in Munich and Erlangen, Germany. The raid is a part of an investigation into acts of fraud suspected at the company's fixed networks business. Siemens AG, the world's largest electronics company was raided by approximately 200 police, prosecutors and tax inspectors at around 30 locations, some of them private homes. Police have already arrested five Siemens employees as part of an investigation into embezzlement and possible bribery at the company.

A total of ten Siemens employees, which included top executives Michael Kutschenreuter and Andy Mattes, and two other non-Siemens workers are still undergoing investigation for involvement in €20 million (USษ.5 million) to front companies and bank accounts in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, according to German publication Spiegel.

"Whether and to which degree these funds were used for paying bribes must still to be investigated," said Munich< /st1:place> senior prosecutor Christian Schmidt-Sommerfeld. "Three of the suspects have already made comprehensive statements."

Reports say that company executives created a secret slush fund with the purpose of paying bribes to secure contracts, customers and design-wins. The tactic, though illegal, is not uncommon in tech companies and may lead the way for several other investigations of the same manner.

Garry's Mod Gets Steamed On November 29th

November 27th, 2006 - Independent Software developer Garry Newman and Valve today announce an electronic distribution agreement for Garry's MOD, the popular software utility downloaded by hundreds of thousands to create mini-games, many of the most popular movie shorts on web sites such as YouTube.com, and more.

"The new version has been created from scratch so almost everything has been revised and re-invented," said Garry Newman, creator of Garry's MOD. "It has a bunch of new tools to play with (winches, hydraulics and hoverballs), totally new spawn menu and a few new Post Processing effects to play with. The great thing about Steam is that I can update really regularly, really easily - which is something I plan on doing - so expect more tools/gamemodes/stuff to come."

The first commercial release of Garry's MOD will be made available on November 29, 2006. Since a Source-based product is required to run Garry's MOD, Valve will be offering a special bundle of Garry's MOD plus Counter-Strike: Source for just ศ.95. For those who already own a Source-based game, Garry's MOD will be sold separately for just ű.95.

Microsoft.com: What's the story?

Jeff Alexander: If you've ever wondered how microsoft.com uses our technology then read on. I recently came across some good information from the folks over at the Operations team at Microsoft.com. The thread basically talks about how we use IIS, Firewalls and Windows Server 2008. I think as we come up to launch next year it's a really good and quick insight into what they do and how they do it. So enjoy the reading and let me know what you think..Pretend I've asked about how they protect our sites...

At this point we still don't use firewalls for MS.COM sites and don't have any plans on the books to put them in place. Here is the short answer as to why:

  1. We don't handle HBI data so we don't have the need for external logging capabilities. If we did handle HBI, we'd have firewalls.
  2. We have 650GB/day of IIS logs just for www.microsoft.com and update.microsoft.com (not including the 6GB/hour for each download server). Just IIS logs are a challenge without trying to parse another 650GB of firewall logs.
  3. 5+ years ago, there wasn't a firewall solution that would scale to our needs and this forced us to focus on network, host, and application security. Based on the success of that work, we've not looked further at firewalls even though there are solutions that I believe (haven't tested) would handled the traffic load (our non-download based web traffic alone can be in the 8-9 Gbps range and 30 total for internal hosted traffic).
  4. We also used NLB for load balancing exclusively up until July 2006 and the micro segmentation of networks required by that solution made firewalls an expensive and very complex solution. Again, especially at the scalability that used to be available.
  5. Application security is critical since a firewall is likely going to allow traffic on the correct port and protocol through to the web servers so IIS/ASP.NET/Applications must deal with these requests gracefully. I realize there are other options/features of firewalls/IPS that provide other options.

In terms of how we protect the sites, we utilize (starting at the outside edge of the network and working in)...

XP NAP Rude Q and A

Jeff Sigman: Since I spend nearly 1/3 of my week answering (or ignoring :->) emails about the XP NAP Client, I thought it might be smart to give a very concise Q&A. Here goes:

Questions

Jeffs (brilliant) Answers

How do I get a copy of the BETA?

While it is on MSConnect, it is easier just to email me to get a copy. I have US-English and Language Neutral versions from the April 2007 Beta release. Remember, this is a BETA and is not officially supported (i.e. no QFEs); see XP SP3 info below.

How will this actually release officially?

ONLY via Windows XP Service Pack 3.

When will XP SP3 RTM?

1H CY2008

Will you please ship it outside of SP3?

I am sorry, no.

Why wont you ship it outside of SP3?

In brief, the risk and cost to Windows was too high. NAP on XP changes 19+ core OS files (e.g. RAS, Wireless, EAP, etc) and we wouldnt get the same testing coverage outside of SP3. Also, OOB releases are notoriously expensive to sustain. The code base would have to be maintained, orthogonally to XP itself, for 10+ years (i.e. MSRCs). Wow.

How does the XP client compare with Vista?

Read my cool blog post.

Is it true that you brought all the great Vista Wired 802.1x features to XP?

Very true. Many customers have wanted Group Policy configuration for Wired 802.1x on XP. NAP gave us the needed business justification to pull it off in XP SP3.

Will the NAP Client release for any other Microsoft O/Ss?

Not at this time. No support for Windows Bob, 3.x, 9x, ME, 2000 and/or 2003.

What about Linux, Mac, etc?

Oh yeah baby, we have Linux right now. Mac is nearly here. This is the dude making it all happen.

What administration tools are available in the XP Client?

Only the command-line (netsh.exe nap). The MMC was written in managed code and isnt available on XP. Also, our assumption is that Group Policy / script is good enough for XP.

What Active Directory schema changes are required, if any?

NAP, in general, does NOT require any AD schema updates. NAP fits in well with existing Server 2000/2003 deployments and simply requires a minimum of ONE Server 2008 computer (NAP Server / NPS).

However, in order to manage Vista (and XP SP3) Wired 802.1x settings a schema update may be required. If you are using Server 2008 AD, it is included. Server 2003 AD requires an updated schema.

Will XP NAP honor my GP configuration settings just like Vista NAP (i.e. NAPAgent, QECs, etc)?

Yup!

Remaining Ultimate Extra Language Packs Released

We are pleased to announce the release of the remaining 19 languages packs for Windows Vista Ultimate. This Ultimate Extras release brings the total number of language packs for use with Windows Vista Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI) to 35. Windows Vista Ultimate enables users install multiple languages on their system and quickly switch between them by associating a system language with their login name.

MUI is particularly useful in multilingual homes where multiple people use a single computer and choose different languages for their primary use. People who wish to learn a new language will also find MUI to be a particularly useful feature. We are aware of a very large number of customers who have purchased Ultimate for this feature specifically and are gratified that these customers can now realize the full benefit of Windows Vista Ultimate.

The languages we are adding today are as follows...

“Certified for Windows Vista” Software Logo Requirements

Critical to the success of User Account Control is having software that works well for standard users and administrators, without excess prompts. Since User Account Control is such a central part of Windows Vista, User Account Control compatibility is one of the key requirements to display the Certified for Windows Vista Logo on software.

v 1.1 of the Certifie d for Windows Vista Software Logo Technical Requirements is available now. Our goal in sharing this information on our blog is to make sure that any ISV’s reading this are aware of the requirements so that they have ample time to make their product compliant and to give our customers confidence that there will be a great supply of software that works well for standard users and UAC.

Some of the key requirements that relate to User Account Control and running as a standard user:

· Make sure the application works well for standard users, unless it is something truly designed to be run only by system administrators such as disk partitioning software. If the program has admin and non-admin components the main application should still be run as a standard user and administrative features should be moved to a separate executable.

· Every .exe file included with an application must have an embedded manifest that defines its execution level. Such as:

<requestedExe cutionLevel level="asInvoker|highestAvail able|requireAdministrator" uiAccess="true|false"/&g t;

Note, including the manifest file will disable File and Registry Virtualization for the application. So the application has to work well for a standard user without relying on virtualization.

· Executable files with .EXE, .DLL, .SYS, .DRV, .OCX, .CPL, or .SCR extensions must be signed with an Authenticode certificate.

· Installers must not assume that the person who starts the installation is the one who finishes the installation. For example if your program allows per user and all user installations, a standard user should be able to start the install, but it should prompt for admin credentials if the user chooses the all users option.

· If the installer uses a boostrapper/chainer, it must include an embedded manifest that designates the desired execution level for the installer.

Another big change in the Certified for Windows Vista logo requirements is that applications must be independently tested by a Microsoft approved testing vendor before they are granted logo certification. A draft of the test cases that will be used to verify compliance are posted here.

We’ve also provided a number of resources to help developers make their software Windows Vista and User Account Control compatible, including:

· Develo per Best Practices and Guidelines for Applications in a Least Privileged Environment

· Microsoft Standard User Analyzer

· Windows Vista Jumpstart Toolkit< /SPAN>

Learn more about the Certified for Windows Vista Software Quality Logo program including how to enroll your company’s software at http://www.isvinnovationporta l.com/windowsvista.

When develo pers release software that meets the Certified for Windows Vista requirements, users will experience even fewer User Account Control prompts than they are seeing on beta versions today. And the Windows Vista team will continue to minimize the number of OS-generated prompts and help make as many legacy programs as possible work without prompting to ensure a good User Account Control experience in the final release.

First Preview of CRM 4 by Stunware.com

Michael introduces the world to Microsoft Dynamics 4.0 aka Titan in his A first preview of Microsoft Dynamics CRM "Titan".

There you can read a lot more about the three major improvements in this new release:
  • Multi-Tenancy: A CRM server now can host multiple organizations. This is extremely important for service providers, as they had to run a server for each CRM organization so far. Microsoft itself is going to provide a hosted CRM solution with CRM Live, but many partners will pop up in the near future offering the same to you. It is a good alternative to an on-premise installation when you're a small company or your employees are spread around the world and you want to easily connect them without building your own infrastructure with 24/7 support.
  • Multi-Language: You can now install MUI packs on your CRM server and clients to support additional languages. Being limited to a single language in the past, a user now can select from a list of available languages and pick his favorite one. The installation of a MUI package is a no-brainer and additional languages are set up in about 5 minutes.
  • Multi-Currency: All currency fields now store the value in the system's base currency and optionally a foreign currency including the exchange rate. Exchange rates have to be configured at the server. There's no historical list of exchange rates kept, so I'm pretty sure to see add-ons soon. Anyway it's a big improvement compared to 3.0, where we have been limited to a single currency.
