MSN to Relaunch as MSN Media Network?
The LiveSide folks are reporting that MSN is looking to relaunch itself as the MSN Media Network. We figured the MSN team would have to do some kind of rebranding, given that most of their properties are now operating under the "Live," rather than the MSN banner. LiveSide says the MSNers are looking to expand their franchises to include
more movie and TV content, as well as some kind of podcasting service. microsoft -

05.06.2008Windows Live Services to be Rebranded as MSN
For those who were shocked
about Windows Live Mail being
re-named Windows Live Hotmail,
you may want to cover your
ears (Or eyes in this case).
We just
recently received exclusive
news from a close source that
many, if not all, Windows Live
services will not be released
under the Windows Live name,
and instead, will once again
be branded as MSN.
The decision
apparently came late Friday,
when many from both the MSN
and Windows Live divisions of
Microsoft met to discuss the
future of several services,
and how they would be branded.
At this
time, we are only aware of one
service that will undergo the
rebranding. Windows Live
Hotmail will once again be
branded as MSN Hotmail,
however we are aware that
several others are planned to
be rebranded as well. Though
with the rebranding of MSN
Hotmail, we can only assume
that Windows Live Mail Desktop
will be rebranded as well.
This is
not the first time this has
happened. Many Windows Live
services have been rebranded
as MSN in the past, the most
recent of which would be
Desktop Search.
This is a
developing story, and we will
update you with the latest as
it comes in.

26.02.2008Microsoft: We Are Not Ripping Off Users With MSN Premium
Microsoft reacted to reports comparing MSN Premium with Windows Live Hotmail, defending its subscription web-based service centered around email. The
reaction from the Redmond company came to criticism that the features, functionality and capabilities it is offering via MSN Premium for approximately
$10 per month have equivalents that are available free of charge to all Windows Live Hotmail users running either Windows XP or Windows Vista. Of
course, Microsoft has rejected the criticism claiming that there are multiple reasons why MSN Premium users are charged for the service. As a
consequence, the company has explained the subtle differences between what MSN Premium has to offer and what Windows Live Mail brings to the table.
"MSN Premium was designed to appeal to a different audience than the free Windows Live services and we continue to support this
service and our subscribers. MSN Premium
offers customers a single integrated client experience that simplifies web access, multiple accounts,
service integration, and access to information via the 'Dashboard'. While Windows Live includes many comparable services, MSN Premium includes
software as part of the subscription, including Encarta Premium, and offers additional functionality such as download manager and SpySweeper. Many
customers are also attracted to MSN Premium's advertisement-free experience, while Windows Live services are ad-funded", Microsoft replied as cited
by
SeattlePI.

chief among those being an
increase in the size of its

Apple also recently upped its

14.08.2007Why are these ads for MSN, not Windows Live?
The identities of Microsoft's two online brands, MSN and Windows Live, have been a subject of confusion since the company launched the latter a few
years ago. So it was interesting -- and a bit perplexing -- to see these billboards show up in Seattle recently.
Here's why:
Microsoft has positioned MSN as a destination for "programmed content," such as the MSN.com portal, MSN Video and MSN Games. Windows Live, on the
other hand, has been designated as a place for communications (Hotmail, Messenger), user-generated content (Spaces), and information
retrieval/question answering (Live Search).

01.09.2005Windows Live rooted in MSN's

Is Windows Live just

Of
the eight or so services that
Microsoft showed off Tuesday

its new Web-based consumer
tools, the vast majority are
reincarnations of products
that the company had either

04.11.2005Windows Live hits the toddler stage
Like most other 2-year-olds, Windows Live is just starting to walk and talk on its own.
After months of learning to crawl, the
service is beginning to move away from its MSN roots and carve out its own identity. In recent months, Microsoft has taken the beta tag off Windows
Live Hotmail, added the Windows Live Photo Gallery and SkyDrive services, and completed mobile versions of Live Search and other services.
"I really feel great about where we are with the product and the release, but also overall with the online services business," said Chris
Jones, corporate vice president for Windows Live. "I think that there is obviously more for us to do and more opportunity, but that's what makes it
fun."
In an interview, Jones talked about how things are going with the effort. He also discussed where he thinks Windows Live
fits into the social-networking world, considered the company's struggles in search, and gave praise to the iPhone.
