MSN to Relaunch as MSN Media Network?

The LiveSide folks are reporting that MSN is looking to relaunch itself as the MSN Media Network. We figured the MSN team would have to do some kind of rebranding, given that most of their properties are now operating under the "Live," rather than the MSN banner. LiveSide says the MSNers are looking to expand their franchises to include more movie and TV content, as well as some kind of podcasting service.

Windows Live Services to be Rebranded as MSN

For those who were shocked about Windows Live Mail being re-named Windows Live Hotmail, you may want to cover your ears (Or eyes in this case).

We just recently received exclusive news from a close source that many, if not all, Windows Live services will not be released under the Windows Live name, and instead, will once again be branded as MSN.

The decision apparently came late Friday, when many from both the MSN and Windows Live divisions of Microsoft met to discuss the future of several services, and how they would be branded.

At this time, we are only aware of one service that will undergo the rebranding. Windows Live Hotmail will once again be branded as MSN Hotmail, however we are aware that several others are planned to be rebranded as well. Though with the rebranding of MSN Hotmail, we can only assume that Windows Live Mail Desktop will be rebranded as well.

This is not the first time this has happened. Many Windows Live services have been rebranded as MSN in the past, the most recent of which would be Desktop Search.

This is a developing story, and we will update you with the latest as it comes in.

Breaking: Thousands of Hotmail passwords leaked online

Neowin has received information regarding a possible Windows Live Hotmail "hack" or phishing scheme where password details of thousands of Hotmail accounts have been posted online. An anonymous user posted details of the accounts on October 1 at pastebin.com, a site commonly used by developers to share code snippets. The details have since been removed but Neowin has seen part of the list posted and can confirm the accounts are genuine and most appear to be based in Europe. The list details over 10,000 accounts starting from A through to B, suggesting there could be additional lists. Currently it appears only accounts used to access Microsoft's Windows Live Hotmail have been posted, this includes @hotmail.com, @msn.com and @live.com accounts.

Microsoft: We Are Not Ripping Off Users With MSN Premium

Microsoft reacted to reports comparing MSN Premium with Windows Live Hotmail, defending its subscription web-based service centered around email. The reaction from the Redmond company came to criticism that the features, functionality and capabilities it is offering via MSN Premium for approximately $10 per month have equivalents that are available free of charge to all Windows Live Hotmail users running either Windows XP or Windows Vista. Of course, Microsoft has rejected the criticism claiming that there are multiple reasons why MSN Premium users are charged for the service. As a consequence, the company has explained the subtle differences between what MSN Premium has to offer and what Windows Live Mail brings to the table.

"MSN Premium was designed to appeal to a different audience than the free Windows Live services and we continue to support this service and our subscribers. MSN Premium
offers customers a single integrated client experience that simplifies web access, multiple accounts, service integration, and access to information via the 'Dashboard'. While Windows Live includes many comparable services, MSN Premium includes software as part of the subscription, including Encarta Premium, and offers additional functionality such as download manager and SpySweeper. Many customers are also attracted to MSN Premium's advertisement-free experience, while Windows Live services are ad-funded", Microsoft replied as cited by SeattlePI.

Hotmail users get a storage bump

"Today, these new features will begin to roll our gradually to all our customers over the next few weeks, so if you dont immediately see them, be patient, theyre coming!"

Microsoft on Monday made a series of updates to its Windows Live Hotmail service, chief among those being an increase in the size of its inboxes. Standard users now get 5GB of storage, while paid MSN Premium and Hotmail Plus accounts now get 10GB of storage.

The move follows Yahoo's decision to offer its mail customers unlimited storage. Google's Gmail currently touts 2.89GB worth of free storage for its accounts. Apple also recently upped its .Mac storage limit to 10GB, split between mail and file storage.

In addition, Microsoft said that Windows Live Hotmail is also adding the ability to accept and decline meeting requests from Outlook accounts as well as a tool for eliminating duplicate contacts and an easier way to switch to Hotmail from another mail service. ..

Why are these ads for MSN, not Windows Live?

The identities of Microsoft's two online brands, MSN and Windows Live, have been a subject of confusion since the company launched the latter a few years ago. So it was interesting -- and a bit perplexing -- to see these billboards show up in Seattle recently.

Here's why: Microsoft has positioned MSN as a destination for "programmed content," such as the MSN.com portal, MSN Video and MSN Games. Windows Live, on the other hand, has been designated as a place for communications (Hotmail, Messenger), user-generated content (Spaces), and information retrieval/question answering (Live Search).

Microsoft to revamp MSN, include stronger Bing ties

According to CNET, MSN is looking to revamp the MSN homepage, and it will have stronger ties with Bing. Two MSN revamp concepts are currently under testing. One version, that is being tested in France shows fewer channels, more video, and a direct connection to a user's Hotmail in-box. Another version, being tested in Brazil shows a more radical overhaul that has social media bar that users can use to share video with their social circle. Windows Live rooted in MSN's past

Is Windows Live just another name for MSN?

Of the eight or so services that Microsoft showed off Tuesday at the launch of Windows Live, its new Web-based consumer tools, the vast majority are reincarnations of products that the company had either released or tested under the MSN brand.

"A lot of the Windows Live services are things that had already been in development by MSN," Directions on Microsoft analyst Matt Rosoff said.

The main Live.com Web page is similar to the Start.com page that has been in testing since earlier this year. Windows Live Mail is a long-planned update to Hotmail designed to make the service more like desktop e-mail software. Other existing products, like Microsoft's MSN Spaces and its OneCare security service, are also joining the Windows Live party...

Windows Live hits the toddler stage

Like most other 2-year-olds, Windows Live is just starting to walk and talk on its own.

After months of learning to crawl, the service is beginning to move away from its MSN roots and carve out its own identity. In recent months, Microsoft has taken the beta tag off Windows Live Hotmail, added the Windows Live Photo Gallery and SkyDrive services, and completed mobile versions of Live Search and other services.

"I really feel great about where we are with the product and the release, but also overall with the online services business," said Chris Jones, corporate vice president for Windows Live. "I think that there is obviously more for us to do and more opportunity, but that's what makes it fun."

In an interview, Jones talked about how things are going with the effort. He also discussed where he thinks Windows Live fits into the social-networking world, considered the company's struggles in search, and gave praise to the iPhone.

Microsoft has been adding more features to Hotmail over the last week and had promised POP3 access for the US and Brazil would be coming this week, and they have delivered. Previously, United States users of Hotmail had to change their country to get access on mobile devices. Now it's natively supported, ready to go.
