Gmail is 5 years old today

It's hard to believe but five years ago Gmail was launched and changed how we view email storage forever. If you recall when Gmail was made semi-public it shattered the email storage capacity for any available free service. Storage was measured in gigs and you seemingly could store unlimited amounts of emails. The Gmail launch also started a frenzy of trying to acquire an invite to the service. It was a clever but very effective technique by Google to give out invites to users who would then get 10 more invites and so on which caused people to start selling them on Ebay.

Hotmail users get a storage bump

"Today, these new features will begin to roll our gradually to all our customers over the next few weeks, so if you dont immediately see them, be patient, theyre coming!"

Microsoft on Monday made a series of updates to its Windows Live Hotmail service, chief among those being an increase in the size of its inboxes. Standard users now get 5GB of storage, while paid MSN Premium and Hotmail Plus accounts now get 10GB of storage.

The move follows Yahoo's decision to offer its mail customers unlimited storage. Google's Gmail currently touts 2.89GB worth of free storage for its accounts. Apple also recently upped its .Mac storage limit to 10GB, split between mail and file storage.

In addition, Microsoft said that Windows Live Hotmail is also adding the ability to accept and decline meeting requests from Outlook accounts as well as a tool for eliminating duplicate contacts and an easier way to switch to Hotmail from another mail service. ..

Many times we forget to add attachments, notice a spelling mistake or forgot to add something in the email. New in Google Labs is an add-on to your account that can undo the email you just sent, with a limit of five seconds, allowing you to go back and re-edit the email you previously just sent. Once the add-on is enabled under your Gmail settings, Labs and Undo Send, users will be promoted with an "Undo" button after sending an email, giving them just enough time to prevent regrettable emails. If users opt to undo the email they had just sent, they will be taken back to the email where edits can be made.

New Windows Live Mail Desktop Feature Revealed

Using their usual "More Than Mail" blog, the Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta team revealed yet another feature of it, along with a screenshot of a recent build.

This build seems to contain yet another UI change, slight this time, along with the so-called Active Search feature.

"People spend the bulk of their time online doing two things: checking their email and searching the web. We thought we?d bring the two together, so you can use search to act on the ideas and tasks piling up in your inbox.

Today, we?re excited to begin testing a new feature we?re calling Active Search for Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta with a small group of beta participants in the US.

Active Search bridges the gap between your inbox and the broader web using the power of search. Using Active Search is essentially the same as conducting a ton of related searches the old fashioned way ? by cutting and pasting terms from your email into a separate web browser ? only without all the effort."

Unlimited online storage for free, almost: Wuala

Wuala is a new company with a compelling story for Web users: If you want to share files -- music, videos, anything -- with your friends and family, it will let you do it for free, with no file size or bandwidth limits.

The catch: You get 1 GB of storage for free. Beyond that, you get access to free storage in proportion to the amount of storage from your own hard drives that you share with the Wuala community.

Wuala uses a "mesh" of hard drives from all its users. Everything you share gets sliced into 500 or so pieces and the distributed in tiny bits, and redundancy, to thousands of other users. When you, or someone you're sharing the file with, wants to load or play a file, it's pulled in from users, BitTorrent-like.

Microsoft have announced that their veteran web-based messenger client will become unavailable from this Tuesday, June 30.
