MSN to Relaunch as MSN Media Network?
The LiveSide folks are reporting that MSN is looking to relaunch itself as the MSN Media Network. We figured the MSN team would have to do some kind of rebranding, given that most of their properties are now operating under the "Live," rather than the MSN banner. LiveSide says the MSNers are looking to expand their franchises to include
more movie and TV content, as well as some kind of podcasting service. microsoft -

20.03.2009Hotmail users get a storage bump
"Today, these new features
will begin to roll our
gradually to all our customers
over the next few weeks, so if
you dont immediately see them,
be patient, theyre
coming!"
Microsoft on Monday made a
series of updates to its
Windows Live Hotmail service,
chief among those being an
increase in the size of its
inboxes. Standard users now
get 5GB of storage, while paid
MSN Premium and Hotmail Plus
accounts now get 10GB of
storage.
The move follows Yahoo's
decision to offer its mail
customers unlimited storage.
Google's Gmail currently
touts 2.89GB worth of free
storage for its accounts.
Apple also recently upped its
.Mac storage limit to 10GB,
split between mail and file
storage.
In addition, Microsoft
said that Windows Live Hotmail
is also adding the ability to
accept and decline meeting
requests from Outlook accounts
as well as a tool for
eliminating duplicate contacts
and an easier way to switch to
Hotmail from another mail
service. ..

14.08.2007Microsoft Bumps Skydrive to 5gb
Microsoft has increased storage on
Windows Live Skydrive to 5GB, up by a multiple of five
from its previous limit of 1GB (the 1GB having doubled the original 500mb in October).
Erick compared Skydrive to Gmail in an apples and
oranges comparison last time; my Gmail account sits at 6.4gb today so Skydrive is still behind, having said that Im not sure how many (average)
people would use Gmail for online storage, so the comparison doesnt make a lot of sense.
The more notable point is that Microsoft
continues to grow its online storage offering when Google simply hasnt launched the fabled Platypus online storage solution despite years of
speculation and rumors. This is one space where Microsoft has the upper hand, and a 4gb storage jump will further increase the appeal of the
product.

22.02.2008Sam's Tip of the Week #3 - Switching to Gmail, the No-Pain Way
Gmail is a very powerful web-based email solution with free IMAP access. I’m not going to go over reasons to switch to Gmail in this tip,
just a way to ease your transition.
The problem every time you switch email services is that you have to switch your address at every site
you use and notify all of your contacts that you have a new address. Oh, and you lose all of your mail.
Gmail includes a really nice
feature: it can receive email from your old address and plop it right into your Gmail inbox, as if it were sent to your Gmail address. This means that
you don’t have to switch your address anywhere if you don’t want to bother.
To enable this feature, first log in to your Gmail
account. Open Settings, and select the “Accounts” tab. Under this tab, you’ll see a section labeled “Get mail from other
accounts.” Click “Add a mail account you own.”

Google vows to increase Gmail storage limit
Google Incorporateds Gmail Web-based e-mail service may have an incrementing storage space counter, but apparently it’s not going fast enough
– and so the search giant has announced plans to speed it up. " A few of you are using Gmail so much that youre running out of space, so
to make good on our promise, today were announcing we are speeding up our counter and giving out more free storage ," said Google engineer Rob
Siemborski.
When it launched in 2004, Gmail offered free accounts with 1GB of storage and by April 2005 Google started gradually increasing
Gmail storage when the service turned one year old. Google got the ball rolling: this year Microsoft Corporation upped its free storage limit for its
Windows Live Hotmail service to 5GB in August, and Yahoo Incorporated started offering "unlimited" storage in May.

Hotmail Gets Storage Limit Bump, Other Upgrades
Microsoft announced today that
Hotmail would undergo some
major upgrades over the next
several weeks that should make
the service more attractive to
webmail users. The most
notable change is that the
company is bumping the storage
limit for Hotmail from 2GB
(for free account users) to
5GB, and from 4GB to 10GB for
paid users. This brings
Hotmail's storage limit above
that offered by Google-which
remains at 2.8GB for free
accounts and 8.8GB for the
lowest tier of paid
accounts.
That's
not the only upgrade the
webmail service is getting.
Hotmail program manager Ellie
Powers-Boyle wrote on the
Windows Live Blog that the
team has begun adding features
that the "more advanced"
users have been asking for.
Some of the more general
upgrades include performance
and quality of service
enhancements and an increase
to the amount of time junk
mail and deleted items are
kept on the server.

GMail: 42GB Free Storage by 2038
Gmail just revised their storage estimates for the next 1449 years. Googlified dug around in the code and discovered that youll be getting a tiny increase to 2912MB on Friday, 4.2GB by October 23,
6GB by January 4 2008, 42GB by 2038 and 2.70266701 × 1072 TB by 3456. Google has since since confirmed by on the Gmail blog that the counters speed has
been increased.
Meanwhile, the paid storage is also getting a bump: $20 used to buy you 6GB extra, but it will now get you 10GB.
The other prices are 40GB for 75/year, 150GB for $250/year and 400GB for $500/year.
This is reassuring: Google is going to keep
increasing the free storage despite having a paid plan they could push users over to. If youre just about to exceed the limit on your Gmail account
and youre planning to add paid storage, it may be worth holding on for 11 more days. And somehow I dont think 42GB will be considered very much by
2038: I expect well be talking in terabytes by then.

Gmail is 5 years old today
It's hard to believe but five years ago Gmail was launched and changed how we view email storage forever. If you recall when Gmail was made
semi-public it shattered the email storage capacity for any available free service. Storage was measured in gigs and you seemingly could store
unlimited amounts of emails. The Gmail launch also started a frenzy of trying to acquire an invite to the service. It was a clever but very
effective technique by Google to give out invites to users who would then get 10 more invites and so on which caused people to start selling them on
Ebay.

How to Connect Your Email Address to Your OpenID Account
OpenID is an excellent solution for establishing a single identity for all your online accounts, but many people haven’t even tried it yet. For
some, the concept of using a URL address for a login ID instead of the traditional email address is still completely foreign.
However, Email to ID could be what the doctor ordered and what these creatures of habits
need. It could also be what OpenID needs in order to expedite wide-spread acceptance as the single sign on identity standard. You can now link your
email address (or several of them) to your OpenID and then use that email address (any of them) to log into any online service that supports it! The
beauty rests in the simplicity of it all. Best of all, it’s all free and easy to do.

Hotmail Plus now offers POP Access
Users for years have been lamenting the fact that Hotmail was only available as an http protocol, and did not offer POP access. Well that's now changed for Hotmail Plus users, and plans are
in the works for making POP access available to all Hotmail users for free, according to a blog post by Lead Program Manager for
Hotmail Omar Shahine.
starting this week Hotmail Plus users ($19.95 a year) will be able to use POP access from any device. In the interest of
transparency though I want to be clear that we have plans to offer POP to all users (all premium and free) but we aren't ready to do that yet. I
can't comment on a timeframe for when free users will get POP, but we hope to do so within the next 12 months.
If you do take
advantage of this premium feature and sign up for Hotmail plus you'll also get an ad-free experience, more storage, larger attachment support, and
a non expiring account.
Our POP service requires that you use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) with the POP and SMTP connection and
use SMTP authentication. This is to ensure that your email address and password are not subject to tampering. The settings are the following:
- POP: pop3.live.com (port 995)
- SMTP: smtp.live.com (port 25)
- Note: make sure you check the box that indicates
that your outgoing server requires authentication (in most mail clients this is not checked by default).
- Username: your full email
address
- Password: your Windows Live ID password
This means that a Hotmail Plus account will now allow users of email
clients such as Eudora, Thunderbird, and Apple Mail, as well as most mobile devices including the Apple iPhone, will now be able to access their
Hotmail accounts.
Shahine notes that at this time the change pertains to Hotmail Plus accounts only, and not MSN Premium
accounts.
