HD Audio patch for cursor patch

Yes, a patch for a patch: When you start a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2, the Realtek HD Audio Control Panel may not start. Additionally, you may receive the following error message:

"Rthdcpl.exe - Illegal System DLL Relocation

The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:WindowsSystem32Hhctrl. ocx occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL.

This problem occurs when the Realtek HD Audio Control Panel (Rthdcpl.exe) by Realtek Semiconductor Corporation is installed."

This problem may occur after you install security update 925902 (MS07-017) and security update 928843 (MS07-008). The Hhctrl.ocx file that is included in security update 928843 and the User32.dll file that is included in security update 925902 have conflicting base addresses. This problem occurs if the program loads the Hhctrl.ocx file before it loads the User32.dll file.

On second thought, IE8 will default to full Web standards

Should Microsoft choose for IE8 to follow the standards developers want or the ones they use ? It's been a tough call, and late yesterday, the company reversed that call. Unlike IE7, IE8 will by default use "Standards mode."..

IE8, and why fixing that pesky 'tab issue' sealed the deal

In my most recent piece, "IE8, and why it's almost my default browser", I outline a couple of factors that inhibited IE8 from holding the default browser position on my PC. Since writing that article, due in part to some helpful Neowin members and some quality time with IE8, I have since awarded IE8 that coveted position on my PC and have promptly thrown Google Chrome to the curb. Perhaps the most taxing of my issues was what has been colloquially referred to as the 'tab issue'. Many users have complained of severe delays when opening new tabs in Internet Explorer.

Microsoft: All versions of IE have critical new bug

Microsoft has confirmed that the unpatched bug in Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) that hackers are now exploiting also exists in older versions of the browser, including the still-widely-used IE6. It adds IE6 and IE8 Beta 2 to the list and recommends disabling the Oledb32.dll to stay safe. A Danish security researcher added that Microsoft's original countermeasure advice was insufficient and recommended that users take one of the new steps the company spelled out. In a revised security advisory, Microsoft said research confirmed that the bug is within all its browsers, including those it currently supports -- IE5.01, IE6 and IE7 -- as well as IE8 Beta 2, a preview version that the company doesn't support through normal channels.

Microsoft continues to warn of IE8 lock-in for XP SP3 users

Microsoft again yesterday issued that same warning to it's consumers. If you are still one of the millions of users on Windows XP with SP3 installed, Microsoft has provided crucial steps to follow if you're ready to upgrade to IE8 RC1. You can obtain IE8 RC1 from the links on this page. To see if you're one of the people who will have IE8 locked in, follow these steps. Is your computer running Windows XP SP3?

IE8 RTM expected in March

TechARP has predicted that Microsoft will reach IE8's RTM milestone in March during the last 2 weeks. TechARP expects so because Microsoft plans to announce the final details of the IE8 RTM schedule and available language versions by March 5, 2009. The malaysian website also expects Microsoft to determine a time frame for the public release of IE8 via Windows Update by March 8. There was a time gap of 8 weeks between IE7's RC1 and its public release. A similar 8-weeks time limit applied to IE8's RC1 in January suggests the final build's availability around March 23 according to TechARP.

UxStyle beta now available

Rafael Rivera from Within Windows has announced that UxStyle Core beta now available for download. To give us some information on what UxStyle Core is, we'll start with a little history. Back in the Windows XP days, users were able to modify a system file called Uxtheme.dll and create custom .msstyle files, thus creating their own desktop themes to replace the default "Luna" theme. However, over time, patching went from just one file to multiple files and repatching was necessary when Microsoft would update the Uxtheme.dll files.

As a lot of people are aware, Rafael from Within Windows has been finding and exposing un-released Windows 7 features, most notably the "Superbar" and Desktop Slideshows.

He has now created a full unlocking tool called "Blue Badge" that will unlock the following features:

- The Superbar
- Gestures and Panning (for use on touch screens)
- Desktop Slideshows

Please note two things:

1. This application does NOT back up any of the files it patches, so to be safe, you will need to back up these files:

WindowsExplorer.exe
WindowsSystem32wisptis.exe
WindowsSystem32ieframe.dll
WindowsSystem32shell32.dll
WindowsSystem32stobject.dll
WindowsSystem32TabletPC.cpl
WindowsSystem32themecpl.dll
WindowsSystem32themeui.dll
WindowsSystem32powercfg.cpl

-----------

2. This application IS compatible with systems currently running the superbar who want to extend their desktop to allow the three other features.

New IE8 build available for program participants

Internet Explorer 8 beta participants today received a surprising e-mail about 'IE8 Partner Build' released to the IE8 Technical Beta to test and find issues. This build represents a preview of IE8's progress and is best used to verify issues fixed since releasing Beta 2. While Microsoft believes it to be of adequate quality for you to use, is not as extensively tested as a milestone build, so it is not meant for the general public but only for testing purposes. Microsoft is not providing any support for this build and henceforth just like in transition from Beta 1 to Beta 2, if you feel that Microsoft have resolved misfiled your bug, please re-activate the bug.

IE8 via Automatic Update for users running IE6 or IE7

Microsoft plans to distribute Internet Explorer 8 to computers running previous versions of IE (IE 6 or IE 7) via Automatic Updates starting from the 3rd week of April. The update will be rolled out gradually from a small user base to large number of users. The update will be a 'high priority' update for systems running Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 and is an 'important' update for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. The final version of IE8 was distributed via automatic update recently to users still running pre-release versions of IE8, Beta 2/RC1. Organizations can use the IE8 Blocker Toolkit to block automatic delivery of IE8.

IE8, and why it's almost my default browser

Microsoft recently released Internet Explorer 8, and while I find that it is a great piece of software, it had a few shortcomings which left Google Chrome untouched with respects to my default browser selection. There is absolutely no doubt that IE8 is better than IE7, its predecessor. It is faster, more robust and certainly more stable. There are also some great new features; I am quite fond of IE8's Web Slices. I utilized a web slice for Digg's top stories and to observe some stock quotes and I found it seamless and quite enjoyable.

First Look: Internet Explorer 8

Larry Larsen: Surprise! IE8 beta is going to be available for download starting today at 12:00 PST. Matthew Lapsen from the IE team gave me a spur of the moment demo for you all showing us some of the core features that power users will enjoy. Keep in mind that this is a developer preview of IE8, so the way it looks may change a little.

A couple highlights I think you'll really like include Activities and Webslices. Activities include doing a contextual search from something highlighted on a website. Webslices are the ability to track a specific section of a site, like a custom RSS feed. So you could make a button on the top of your browser that tracks an eBay auction or the status of our friends on Facebook.
