22.10.2007Windows Vista, Office 2007, Exchange 2007 Business Launch
While it's not the retail
launch date, today is the
official business launch for
the next generation of
Microsoft's Windows operating
system, Windows Vista. More
than five years in the making,
Windows Vista is a
developmental milestone that,
according to Microsoft, rivals
that of it's own Windows 95
launch. While Microsoft claims
that the changes in Windows
Vista are greater than the
transition to Windows 95 from
Windows 3.11 and earlier
versions, touting it's
enhanced security, data
protection and recovery, and
user interface enhancements,
many industry analysts have
said that Windows Vista is
more evolutionary than
revolutionary. Still, there
are some major changes from
Windows XP, and many consumers
have come to experience this
first hand thanks to the
enormous Windows Vista beta
program.
Earlier
this year Bill Gates stated
that he expected the launch of
windows Vista to rival that of
the Windows 95 launch, with
more anticipation and a larger
kickoff. Of course we'll have
to wait until the retail
launch in January for the
general consumer pomp and
circumstance, but todays
business launch event will
give many a firsthand look at
the next generation of
Windows, as well as the new
Microsoft Office 2007 and
Microsoft Exchange Server.
Will the fanfare and
anticipation help to build on
the January retail launch?

business launch site where

todays business launch event

29.12.2005Microsoft Set to Launch Vista to Businesses
At an event this Thursday at
NASDAQ in New York City,
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer
will officially launch
versions of Windows Vista,
Office 2007, and Exchange 2007
aimed at big businesses. Vista
and Office 2007 were completed
earlier this month, but
Microsoft doesn't expect to
ship Exchange until sometime
in December. A larger,
consumer-oriented launch event
for Windows Vista and Office
2007 is still scheduled for
January 30, 2007.
The timing of the business
launch event is a bit odd:
Because consumers won't be
able to get Vista-based PCs
until January, some may hold
off on new PC purchases this
holiday season. But the
versions of Vista and Office
2007 that Microsoft is
shipping starting tomorrow
will not be made available to
consumers, though news of the
launch could be confusing to
them. Instead, only businesses
with volume license agreements
with Microsoft will be able to
get the code now.

02.11.2006PDC 2007 Cancelled
Microsoft announced
late on Thursday May 24 that
it has cancelled the
Professional Developers
Conference (PDC) that was
slated for this
October.
Microsoft said it had
decided to “reschedule”
the event to some unspecified
future date. The
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-
us/events/bb288534.aspx>notice
of the cancellation is on the
Microsoft Developer Network
(MSDN) Web site:
“As the PDC is the
definitive developer event
focused on the future of the
Microsoft platform, we try to
align it to be in front of
major platform milestones. By
this fall, however, upcoming
platform technologies
including Windows Server 2008,
SQL Server codenamed
‘Katmai,’ Visual Studio
codenamed ‘Orcas’ and
Silverlight will already be in
developers’ hands and
approaching launch, which is
where we’ll focus our
developer engagement in the
near term. We will update this
site when we have a new date
for the PDC that is better
timed with the next wave of
platform technologies.”
For the last few
years, Microsoft had held a
PDC every two years. The show
tends to be a showcase for
Windows and developer-tools
futures...

25.05.2007SQL Server 2008 ETL World Record
Len Wyatt: Today at the launch of SQL Server 2008, you may have seen the references to world-record performance doing a load of data using SSIS.
Microsoft and Unisys announced a record for loading data into a relational database using an Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) tool. Over 1 TB of
TPC-H data was loaded in under 30 minutes. I wanted to provide some background material in the form of a Q&A on the record, since its hard to give
