As 2008 has kicked in, it's now time to face the ugly truth. The clock is ticking for Windows XP. 03.05.2008Windows XP SP3 RC goes to MSDN, TechNet testers
Microsoft made available on December 3 for download the near-final Release Candidate (RC) of Windows XP Service Pack (SP) 3. The RC is available to
all Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) and TechNet subscribers. This isn’t yet a generally available, “public” RC of XP SP3; that is
still coming at some future date that Microsoft hasn’t disclosed. Microsoft provided an RC “preview” of XP SP3 to 15,000 testers in
mid-November.
Microsoft is still on track to ship the final XP SP3 in the first half of calendar 2008. XP SP3 is a rollup of all previously
released XP updates, according to Microsoft, “including security updates, out-of-band releases, and hotfixes.”
Lately,
Microsoft has been releasing XP SP3 and Vista SP1 builds in lockstep. (The same 15,000 testers that got XP SP3 RC preview also got the Vista SP1 RC
preview.) Given that Microsoft told its own employees to expect the company to make the RC of Vista SP1 more broadly available some time this week, it
seems logical that the Vista SP1 RC is right around the corner, too.

05.12.2007Microsoft: Vista SP1 Demand Behind XP SP3 Delay
Microsoft on Tuesday said that due to "high customer demand" for Vista service pack 1, MSDN and TechNet subscribers will have to wait longer than
the general public to get their hands on Windows XP service pack 3.
In an email to ChannelWeb, a spokesperson said Microsoft
expects to make XP SP3 available for download to TechNet and MSDN subscribers on May 2,
three days
after it begins distributing XP SP3 via Windows Update and the Download Center.

23.04.2008XP SP3 Released to MSDN/TechNet Subscriber Downloads
While the
planned release schedule for XP SP3 stated MSDN/TechNet
subscribers would be receiving the update on May 2, a few days after the public release, Microsoft appears to have listened to the numerous complaints
on its TechNet forums and has posted the bits to both the
MSDN and
TechNet Subscriber
Downloads.
Or, another possible reason for the early release could be that there wasn't
that much demand for Vista SP1 after all?

23.04.2008Updates to Office 2003 include changes made in Office 2003 Service Pack 3
Nick MacKechnie: As you may know,
Office 2003
Service Pack 3 contains
some changes to the behaviour of Office. For
example, certain file types cannot be opened or saved by default, although you can re-enable this functionality by setting registry keys as described
in
this Microsoft Knowledge Base article and on
David LeBlancs Blog. A common
question is whether these behaviour changes are included in post-SP3 security updates. In short, yes: post-SP3 security updates contain behaviour
changes first released in SP3. This post will briefly describe why that occurs and will outline which updates contain which changes.

15.04.2008Windows XP SP3 release just around the bend?
Though we expected, or rather hoped; for Windows XP SP3 late last month it seems that it may arrive before May. According to an "internal schedule"
obtained over at Engadget, OEMs, volume license, Connect, MSDN and TechNet subscribers will have access to the update on April 21st, while everyone
else won't notice it until April 29th when it hits the Microsoft / Windows Update download center. For those who are too busy to download it and
install it, they might have to wait until June 10th when it hits the Automatic updates.
For those who don't know; Windows XP SP3
(Service Pack 3) will be the third and last major update for Microsoft's Windows XP operating system. The company released a nearly final beta build
of SP3 called Release Candidate 2 Refresh last month to the public. The latest beta version added support for the HD Audio high-definition audio
format and fixes for some issues with the Windows Update service. Microsoft to date has said only that it expects to roll out a final version of
Windows XP SP3 in the first half of 2008.

26.03.2008XP SP3: TechNet and MSDN subscribers to get beta in two weeks
Microsoft provided an update on the timing for Windows XP Service Pack (SP) 3 on August 29.
Company officials said on Wednesday
that the Windows team plans to deliver a near-public beta of XP SP3 (its going to all TechNet and Microsoft Developer Network subscribers) by
mid-September.
The final version of XP SP3 is slated to hit some time in the first half of calendar 2008, officials said. (Thats
the same date the Softies have been promising officially for a while now. Microsoft wont be any more specific on XP SP3 timing.)
Company officials did not release a feature set for XP SP3 on August 29. The only new piece of information available was the public-beta due
date.
Microsoft made available to a set of private testers a preview of XP SP3 earlier in August. I saw an alleged fix list at
that time: It consisted of nearly 1,000 items.
The last time Microsoft provided a cumulative update to Windows XP was in 2004,
when it released XP SP2.

21.10.2008XP SP3 Private Beta Available? Public Beta soon?
I came across a French
blog posting by David Sebban (presumably from Microsoft France) at MSDN Blogs in which he mentions that the beta for XP SP3 is
now available for 12,000 invited testers (mainly manufacturers and retailers?) and that a public beta will be available soon.
David also mentions that XP SP3 will not contain any new functionality except for the addition of the
NAP (Network Access Protection) Client which
has been known for quite awhile.
Following is the
translated text via Google:
In the movement of the vagueness 2008 which will contain SQL Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008 and Windows Server 2008, 2 Packs Service will
leave in the neighbourhoods the first quarter 2008: the SP1 of Windows Vista and the SP3 of Windows XP.
This last is available
besides since today for 12000 invited beta tester (mainly of the manufacturers and the retailers) and will not contain new functionalities except the
addition of customer NAP (Network Access Protection). This customer is necessary if you wish to integrate working stations XP in an infrastructure NAP
Windows Server 2008.
The SP3 of Windows XP will thus contain mainly updates of safety existing and some new hotfixs and beta
public will be available soon.

27.01.2009Windows XP SP3 Final Released to PC Manufacturers (Updated)
WB: In regards to the availability of XP SP3 for MSDN/TechNet subscribers and the availability of the XP Embedded/WinFLP editions, Chris Keroack,
release manager of XP SP3,
mentioned the
following:
- "MSDN/Technet - Not yet. This will be available within the next month."
- "XP Embedded and Windows Fundamentals
will be available at a later date."
We personally find it a bit odd that paying subscribers will not have access to the build until after
the public download on April 29.
Microsoft confirmed today that the final version of Windows XP Service Pack 3 has been
released to PC manufacturers right on schedule. The update will be available to end users to download next Monday, April 29, and pushed to Windows
Update in June.
Microsoft gave us an early look at the update as a 580MB disk image. What we saw is barely changed from our
preview of an early beta of SP3, and seeing Windows XP SP3 for the first time is highly unremarkable.
Far from being a new
operating system, Windows XP SP3 is really an accumulation of updates for compatibility, security, and performance. It doesn't contain new features
found in Vista, aside from Network Access Protection (NAP), which lets XP systems work with Windows Server 2008's ability to enforce system health
requirements before allowing access to network assets.

21.04.2008New Windows Embedded Public CTP Downloads Available
Shayna: Even though it's summer vacation time around here for many, our product team has been hard at work on preparing a refresh of the Windows
Embedded Standard Community Technology Preview (CTP) for all of our dedicated testers out there! As of a few hours ago, this new download is now
available on the Windows Embedded Standard Connect page:
https://connect.microsoft.com/windowsembedded. The CTP Refresh includes an improved setup
experience and migration support from previous versions of Windows XP Embedded. Additionally, it now includes .NET 3.5, additional device drivers,
System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) Client Prereq Macro, and various other updates based on direct customer feedback.
Today we also posted a CTP of Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Windows XP Embedded. This is a rollup of hot fixes and security updates Microsoft has
released since the RTM of Service Pack 2. SP3 also includes select out-of-band features and enhancements. SP3 provides a new baseline for customers
deploying Windows XP Embedded.
