26.05.2006Microsoft's OneCare improves antivirus test ranking
Microsoft Corp.'s Windows
Live OneCare climbed from
March's dead last to 14th
place in a test of 17
antivirus programs, an
Austrian security researcher
reported today.
Andreas Cleminti's AV
Comparatives latest test
pitted the top antivirus
software against the
20,000-some threats that
debuted during the last three
months to measure how well
each could finger unknown
exploits. Cleminti stopped
updating each product's virus
database, or "signature,"
Feb. 2, but continued to probe
their defenses with every
newly discovered virus,
malicious script, worm,
Trojan, or backdoor until May
2.
"Even if most
antivirus products provide
daily or hourly
updates, without
heuristic/generic methods there is always a
time frame where the user is
not protected," Cleminti said
in the report issued today.

the way of new features or UI, version 2.5 is expected to be included in Microsoft Equipt, as well as OneCare for Server (for SBS), which is expected
to be released later in the year. If previous upgrades are any indication, the new version should be rolling out to existing users in the coming days
and weeks, but you can download the final bits now, either as a trial, or to upgrade your current subscription.

OneCare Was Not a Failure, Microsoft Exec Says
Critics asserting that Windows Live OneCare didn't succeed on its own have got it wrong, according to Microsoft's chief security advisor for
the EMEA region. Roger Halbheer, in a blog posting on Monday, said it was "nonsense" for anyone to suggest that Microsoft's consumer
antimalware security solution had somehow "failed." Last month, Microsoft announced that it planned to discontinue OneCare while simultaneously
saying it would offer a free anti malware solution code-named "Morro." OneCare is priced at $49.95 per year, but Halbheer noted that many people
just cannot afford the extra amount, especially in newer and arguably poorer markets.

I say crapware; you say 'performance enhancer'
Mary Jo Foley: Do you consider Microsoft products like Windows Defender antispyware tool and Windows Live OneCare

In an e-mail exchange this week with a spokesperson for Microsoft’s OEM unit over what kinds of tweaks Microsoft is encouraging its PC partners to make to provide a

Microsoft concedes: OneCare antivirus software 'not stellar'
Microsoft Corporation
yesterday acknowledged poor
test results of its OneCare
antivirus software, but
promised it would do better by
paying more attention to
malware actually in the wild.
Earlier this month, AV
Comparatives, a non-profit
site that tests the most
popular antivirus products,
found OneCare detected 82.4%
of nearly half a million
pieces of malware. Early last
month, Virus Bulletin, a
U.K.-based publication that
put 15 Vista security programs
up against January's
WildList, found that
Microsoft's Windows Live
OneCare 1.5 failed the test,
among four others.
" The recent detection
numbers were not stellar. We
missed capturing a VB100
in the
last test because we missed
one virus. As a result, we
have adopted new methodologies
to ... look more closely at
families of viruses that have
been found to be 'in the
wild,' found actively
spreading among users. We will
keep on working to acquire the
VB100 Award each time we are
tested by Virus Bulletin. You
will see our results gradually
and steadily increase until
they are on par with the other
majors in this arena ,"
wrote Jimmy Kuo, a member of
the Microsoft security
research and response team, on
a company blog. Kuo also noted
that Microsoft would put more
resources into identifying
what he called " truly
important malware ."

Test automation with Windows XP Embedded
Windows XP Embedded is essentially a developer-customized, slimmed-down version of
the Windows XP operating system intended for use on devices like game consoles, information kiosks, network appliances, and the like.
With the rapid growth in the use of mobile and embedded devices, this platform is increasingly important. But do you know enough about Windows XP
Embedded to develop for the platform or effectively test your applications there?
In the October issue of MSDN Magazine, Dr. James McCaffrey and Mike Hall, a Senior Product Manager in the Microsoft
Mobile and Embedded Devices group, explain how you can create
lightweight but powerful UI test automation for software systems that run on Windows XP Embedded.
Don't forget to browse the code
online.
You can get more Test Run insight in the MSDN Magazine archives,

Windows Live OneCare 2.5 beta ending, perpetual beta begins.
According to sources, following the official release of the final version of Windows Live OneCare 2.5, Microsoft sent out a flurry of e-mails to its
testers. First off, the software giant reminded its testers that the 2.5 Beta will expire on July 31, 2008, after which OneCare will no longer keep
itself up to date (both virus definitions and the actual software). Testers are urged to uninstall the beta and buy a full subscription, which is
offered to them at a discounted $24.95 a year for up to three PCs, until July 31, 2008.
With the beta wrapping up, Microsoft quickly
sent out another e-mail to certain testers asking if they wanted to continue to test new versions of the software. If the answer was yes, Microsoft
responded with a confirmation and then the next day, e-mailed that tester the details of the Windows Live OneCare Perpetual Beta program, an
invite-only group. Version 2.5 was all about under-the-hood improvements but based on what my source tells me about the Perpetual Beta, it seems that
Microsoft is now satisfied with the program's performance and is focusing on new features and functionality.

Microsoft wants to play with your home network
With the release of version 2.0, Windows Live OneCare is no longer just for one PC; Microsoft now wants to inoculate entire home networks with its
computer care service.
When it launched OneCare in May 2006, Microsoft risked alienating its close security partners such as
Symantec and McAfee by entering a market it previously avoided. Now, the Redmond company is upping the ante by going after families with multiple PCs
in their homes.
Windows Live OneCare 2.0, which is sold as a retail package but branded like Microsoft's other online services,
includes a new centralized interface for monitoring the security of all computers on a network, and running maintenance tasks without having to visit
each PC manually.
