28.07.2009Microsoft patches critical PowerPoint hole
Microsoft on Tuesday released a patch aimed to
fix a critical vulnerability in PowerPoint that had already led to exploits.
The vulnerability is
listed as critical for Office 2000,
but rated only as important for Office XP, Office 2003, and Office 2007. However, the hole had already formed the basis of targeted attacks, prompting
Microsoft to
issue a warning last month.

12.05.2009Works 9.0 to come in both free and paid flavors
Heres a nice find by the folks
over at
Clubic.com
a>: The Web-order
form for Works 9.0.
Microsoft is
still planning to offer a paid
version of the next version of
its consumer/home-office
productivity suite. It will
cost $39.95 at retail about
$10 per copy less than Works
8.0.
Theres
still no link or mention of
the free, ad-funded version of
the next version of Microsoft
Works, which Satya Nadella,
the head of Microsofts search
and ad platform unit, said
that Microsoft had released as
of late last week.
I wonder if the ad-funded
version of Works 9 will debut
as a service, instead of
software. Such an offering
would make Works 9 more of a
real competitor to Google Docs
& Spreadsheets, in my opinion,
than would a fat-client
offering.
Microsoft still isnt
providing any more specifics.
Stay tuned.

29.10.2006Updated: SpaceX Falcon 1 Suffers Anomaly During Launch
At 11:36 pm EDT August 2, 2008 the Falcon 1 lost contact with the base in Hawthorn, California. After aborting the first launch at .5 seconds, the
counter was reset to 11 minutes and launch countdown was reinitiated. At T-minus one minute, cheers could be heard from the staff as the Falcon 1
finally blasted off.
Unfortunately after T+140s when the vehicle switched to inertial guidance mode at an altitude of 35 km, all contact
was lost. Staff at SpaceX stated that an anomaly occurred and immediately cut feed to the webcast.
SpaceX, in the running to help assist
NASA if or when funding runs out, designed the Falcon 1 with the minimal number of engines. As a result, there is only one engine per stage and an
automatic safe shut-down and unloading of propellant occurs if any "off nominal conditions are detected."
The Falcon 1 was carrying the
Trailblazer, two CubeSats (one of which was NASA's NanoSail-D) for the Air Force and MDA and unfortunately, also carried the remains of astronaut
Gordon Cooper and the actor James Doohan from Star Trek.
In the case that this rocket is non-recoverable there are two additional Rocket 1s
available for launch.
Update at 12:42 am EDT - Kimbal Musk, the brother of the CEO of SpaceX has written that that rocket has been lost.
After contacting Mr. Musk he was unable to officially confirm this information but states that his brother, Elon Musk, will be releasing a press
release shortly.
Update at 1:01 am EDT - SpaceX is reporting that the booster on the rocket did not separate correctly. Diane Murphy, the
SpaceX vice president of marketing and communications released the following statement tonight:
"It was obviously a big disappoint not to
reach orbit on this Flight 003 of the Falcon 1. On the plus side, the flight of our first stage with the new Merlin 1C regenerative engine that will
be used in Falcon 9 was picture-perfect. Unfortunately, a problem occurred at stage separation causing the stages to be held together. This is under
investigation."

Wi-Fi buses drive rural web use
In many parts of the
developing world it is too
expensive to lay the fibres
and copper cable to deliver a
standard internet connection.
In rural India and parts of
Rwanda, Cambodia and Paraguay,
buses and a fleet of
motorcycles equipped with
Wi-Fi offer web content to
computers with no internet
connection by updating their
pages (up to six times a day)
beforehand in cities. As well
as offering popular pages, the
United Villages project also
allows users to request
specific information, for a
few additional rupees. The
founder of the United Villages
initiative, Amir Hassan, said
the company had been set up to
give those people in these
areas a slice of the web for a
fee noting that "there's
only 0.003% percent of the web
that rural India cares
about."
The Wi-Fi
vehicles also deliver and
collect e-mails from the
villagers as well as made it
easier to buy essential
products such as fertilisers,
pesticides, books and
medicines. " What we've
done is created a catalogue of
those products that they can
order at the kiosk and get
them delivered the next day
via the bus. We're bringing
e-commerce to rural
India ," Hassan said.
Because many people in rural
communities cannot read, and
because the majority of the
web is in English, villagers
often rely on the person who
operates the local computer to
help them. " Right now,
more and more people are
asking me about what can be
done on the PC and internet.
My objective is to show to the
village youth that having a PC
with connectivity is a viable
business so that more and more
unemployed youth can take up
this as a self-employment
opportunity ," said Raj
Kishor Swain, who runs the
computer in the village of
Satasankha.
