Sun's ODF plugin for MS Office now available

The Sun ODF Plug-in is an extension to Microsoft Office that allows it to read and write ISO standard ODF files. It supports Office 2000, XP, and 2003, and works on Windows XP and Vista. It adds to MS Office the ability to read and write ODF text, spreadsheet, and presentation files (.odt, .ods, and .odp) - the ISO standard editions of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files.

Furthermore, ODF text files (.odt) can be made the default format for MS-Word thanks to this plug-in (and double-clicking on an ODF text file on the desktop would automatically open it in MS-Word).

Addressing the accessibility concerns of existing MS-Office users was one of the key reasons behind Sun's development of the ODF plug-in, and I have been one of several folks involved in testing the accessibility of this plug-in (along with several beta testers whose employees with disabilities were likewise doing accessibility testing).

Windows XP Service Pack 3 RC2 via Windows Update (Public Availability Program)

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate 2 is available to the public. Specific registry settings will allow you to be offered SP3 via Windows Update.

Download the script and run it on a machine currently running Windows XP Service Pack 2. The script sets a registry key on your system. The registry key is required for Windows Update to recognize your machine as a valid target for Windows XP Service Pack 3 RC2.

Versions of Windows XP Service Pack 3 prior to Release Candidate 2 should be removed before attempting to use the registry key. Windows Update will not offer Release Candidate 2 to machines with previous versions of the Windows XP Service Pack 3 beta.

It is recommended that you apply the resulting update package to an activated, genuine copy of Windows XP, in a test environment. As with any pre-release software, it is also recommended that you back up files and settings on your machine before applying this update package.

Microsoft tweaks anti-piracy check for Windows XP

Microsoft has updated software that verifies whether a copy of Windows is genuine in its Windows XP Professional edition, making it similar to the notification in Windows Vista and thus more persistently visible to users. In a blog posting attributed to Alex Kochis, a Microsoft director of product marketing and management, the company said it made the changes to the Windows Genuine Notification (WGA) alerts for XP Pro because it is "the product edition that is most often stolen."

Now when a version of Windows XP Pro is found to be pirated or counterfeit, the next time a user logs on to the system, the desktop screen background will be black, replacing whatever custom desktop may have been set by the user. This will reappear every 60 minutes, even if a user resets the screen's background. Previously, this was not a part of the WGA notification for Windows XP Pro.

Windows XP a hot item on Amazon

Although Microsoft officially stopped selling Windows XP as of June 30, retailers can keep selling it as long as they have copies.

Perhaps as a result of its potentially impending scarcity, XP is near the top of Amazon.com's software list, with the full version of XP Home at No. 15 and the full version of XP Pro at No. 21.

The highest ranked Vista edition doesn't crack the top 25, although it does come on nearly all new PCs these days so most people don't need a boxed copy.

Pirates Offered Wind XP Pro at $100 Discount

Users running illegal copies of Windows XP are being offered discounted purchase prices.

Recently in the DailyTech labs we had a test bed machine that was giving us "this copy of Windows is not genuine" messages.

Last week we tried to remedy the message by following Microsoft's recommended course of action, which was to verify the copy through its website and purchase a legitimate key. When we attempted to do so, Microsoft's website indicated that the upgrade service was not available to US customers (or any customers as far as we could tell).

How to Delete a Windows Service in Vista or XP

If you are a fan of tweaking your system and disabling services, you might find that over time your Windows Services list becomes huge and unwieldy with a large number of services in the list that will never be enabled.

Instead of just disabling a service, you can alternatively completely delete the service. This technique can be especially helpful if you've installed some piece of software that doesn't uninstall correctly, and leaves an item in the service list.

Microsoft decides Vista is flawless

Microsoft may have released a beta of Vista's Service Pack 1 - but according to the company's official support site, the operating system is absolutely flawless.

When Word crashed on a disgruntled PC Pro reader, he dutifully agreed to fill in the online form to report the crash.

However, when he went to select his operating system from the list, he found that Vista wasn't listed - click here to see the errant form.

We can only draw one of two conclusions: either Microsoft's support staff have sloppily forgotten to add Vista to the online support forms, or else they truly believe the operating system is invincible.

Although judging by the complaints that regularly fill our inbox, the latter seems decidedly unlikely.

XP Gets Yet Another Life

Escaping the grasp of death once again, Windows XP gets another 5 years of life! While they still plan to end mainstream support for Windows XP Pro on April 14, 2009, HP says that Microsoft is still giving OEMs the option to install XP on their machines for one more year, until April 30, 2010.

XP Extended Support (strictly security updates; nothing else) will; run all the way until April 8, 2014! They say that they hate extending dates time and time again, and strongly encourage customers to upgrade to Vista (at least) or Windows 7. But with all these extensions, maybe somewhere deep down in the heart of Redmond, there's a bit of nostalgia that just can't let go of good ol' Windows XP.

Vista licence options make Macs look cheap

A UK property asset management company is examining Apple Macs and Linux desktops to cut its dependency on Microsoft in the wake of the software giant's aggressive licensing options.

Capital & Regional has about 700 PC users and currently runs Windows XP Pro and Office XP Pro, Chief Information Officer Richard Snooks has hit out Microsoft's aggressive licensing policies.

"We are feeling the pinch of the aggressive revenue targets of Microsoft," Snooks said. "We are asking ourselves, 'Are they (Microsoft) fit for our business?'"

In particular, Snooks isn't convinced by the arguments for upgrading to Microsoft's latest Windows operating system, Vista, and is actively looking at alternatives, including a small trial of a Suse Linux desktop inside the IT department. ..

Hardware thin-client turns XP Home, Linux into 10-user terminal server

Local firm MUPtech showcased its proprietary thin-client hardware to turn an Win XP Home and XP Pro system into a multi-user server, running up to 10 remote clients per machine using ultra-thin set-top-boxes as clients instead of full PCs.

The firm sells these thin black boxes which the company calls "MUP-PC" which are connected to the main "server" - actually any PC capable of running XP Home or XP Pro - over Ethernet. Each box features connectors for Audio, VGA video, and PS2 keyboard and mouse. The hardware also supports Linux.

The host PC runs a proprietary software "server" which turns a standard XP Home or XP Pro into a multi-user server. It would be like Citrix or Terminal Services but without a PC on the client side, replaced instead with this black box. Where have I heard of this before? Oh yes, Sun Ray thin clients. Basically this is like having a VNC client in a set-top box, to which you can hook a PS2 keyboard, mouse and speakers. Their technology is proprietary, though.

Enable Vista's hidden administrator account, and password-protect its equivalent in XP

You probably know about the "hidden" administrator account in Windows XP. It's the only account on XP systems on which no other accounts have been created. Until you add a new account, you zip right to the desktop when you boot the OS, with no stop at the Welcome screen. Once you set up one or more new accounts, the default administrator disappears, though you can bring it back in both XP Home and Pro (more on this below).

Congress wants privacy answers from Google, MS, AOL

"Committee on Energy and Commerce" and "rampage"don't often appear in the same sentence, but the House committee is certainly on a tear when it comes to behavioral advertising. Not content with firing off a bipartisan list of sharp questions to ISPs who installed NeduAd traffic analysis hardware, the Committee on Friday expanded its nastygram list to include "33 leading Internet and broadband companies" including Google, Microsoft, Time Warner, AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast. Legislation on the issue could be coming.
