MS-ManiC: Microsoft steps up its multicore work

Microsoft officials have been talking up, as of late, the need for some fundamental changes in software design and development to accommodate the shift to many cores on client systems. There are several Microsoft Research projects focusing on various aspects of the many-core challenge. The newest and seemingly most far-reaching of these is MS-ManiC.

According to a new page on the Microsoft Research site, the MS-ManiC (Memory Systems for Many Cores) projectSounds ambitious. What form would such a memory system take and when might it move from research to a product group? No word. In fact, theres very little information (yet) on the MS-ManiC site, other than a link to a newly published whitepaper, Memory Performance Attacks: Denial of Memory Service in Multi-Core Systems, (which is part of the proceedings of the 16th USENIX Security Symposium from August 2007).

Ramsans 2 TB rack of flash memory

Need a few terabytes of really fast storage? Texas Memory Systems will be able to solve that need in a few months with their upcoming RAMSAN-500 box that can hold up to 2 TB of Flash memory along with a maximum of 64 GB of DDR2 memory.

The flash memory is the primary storage for the 4U high rack-mountable box while the DDR2 acts as a very fast data buffer. The back of the 500 can have multiple Fibrechannel or Infiniband outputs.

At the Siggraph convention in San Diego California, Texas Memory Systems Executive Vice President Woody Hutsell told us that the device is primarily used for read intensive data bases and video editing (hence the presence at Siggraph). Big movie companies could story their source video footage on the RAMSAN-500 and then have teams of editors edit the footage simultaneously thanks to read latencies of just 0.15 ms and a 0.5 ms write time.

Hutsell told us that the RAMSAN-500 will be available sometime in the fourth quarter. The company will still sell its 400 model which uses all DDR memory. Hutsell added that huge drop in flash memory prices in the past years have made the 500 series much more affordable than other DDR-only storage boxes. This will probably be $200,000 per terabyte on the high side, he said.

Sun's ODF plugin for MS Office now available

The Sun ODF Plug-in is an extension to Microsoft Office that allows it to read and write ISO standard ODF files. It supports Office 2000, XP, and 2003, and works on Windows XP and Vista. It adds to MS Office the ability to read and write ODF text, spreadsheet, and presentation files (.odt, .ods, and .odp) - the ISO standard editions of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files.

Furthermore, ODF text files (.odt) can be made the default format for MS-Word thanks to this plug-in (and double-clicking on an ODF text file on the desktop would automatically open it in MS-Word).

Addressing the accessibility concerns of existing MS-Office users was one of the key reasons behind Sun's development of the ODF plug-in, and I have been one of several folks involved in testing the accessibility of this plug-in (along with several beta testers whose employees with disabilities were likewise doing accessibility testing).

Intel and Nvidia Skirmish Over Enthusiast Memory

This week, memory module manufacturer Corsair announced a new set of high-performance DDR3 modules that fit Intel's Extreme Memory specification. These modules have additional overclocking profiles built into the SPD (serial presence detect) ROM on the memory module, which allows simple and reliable overclocking of memory. Intel Extreme Memory is intended for the upcoming release of high-end desktop motherboards using Intel's X38 chipset.

Intel Extreme Memory is similar in concept to SLI Ready Memory (aka "Extended Performance Profiles, or EPP) developed by Nvidia and, coincidentally, Corsair. However, the way the Intel Extreme profiles are burned into SPD differs from the way Nvidia has specified EPP.

The next generation of EPP, dubbed EPP 2.0, is in the works, but will also differ from Intel Extreme Memory. EPP 2.0 will add DDR3 support for unannounced Nvidia chipsets.

When asked if this might increase buyer confusion, Corsair Vice President of Marketing Jack Peterson noted that the company planned an educational campaign, using price breaks and bundling to steer users to the right memory and motherboard combination. Peterson also suggested that the company was investigating a utility that would allow users to re-burn EPP profiles into Intel Extreme Memory and vice versa, but no final decision has been made.

Microsoft mouse to combine wireless, memory

Microsoft is preparing the Mobile Memory Mouse 8000, a laptop mouse which combines several important features. Above all is 1GB of internal memory, allowing owners to treat the 8000 as a USB flash drive. The mouse also offers not one but two wireless options: Bluetooth or 2.4GHz, the latter through the same USB port that allows file transfer. A switch flips between the two. The USB connector further offers magnetic charging through a direct connection.

The sensor is a high-resolution laser, and added controls on the mouse include a tiltwheel and two side buttons, assigned by default to "Magnifier" and "Back." Being a Microsoft mouse, the 8000 is immediately compatible with Windows Vista's Flip3D interface. It should be released in October for $159.

Sparkle produces the first 80 nanometre Nvidia card

MANY businesses in Europe will be closed from Monday till probably January the 3rd 2007. That hasn't stopped Sparkle from announcing its Calibre P768 card based on Geforce 7600 GT 80nm chip. I guess Nvidia had to do it in 2006 as it promised to its investors it was supposed to shift from 90 nanometre to 80 a while ago.

The new 80 nanometre parts will end up clocked at 650MHz - 90MHz faster than the previous 7600 GT clock. The chip behind it is G73 but we don't know what Nvidia calls the new 80 nanometre ones. The memory on Sparkle card works at 1600MHz and Nvidia hasn't changed the chip memory support as it still works with 128 bit memory only. The card comes with 256MB memory and has twelve rendering pipelines. It supports PCIe 16X interface.

How Google Earth Really Works

Don't miss this article if youre at all curious about how Google Earth works on a technical level how data measured in terabytes and terapixels get sent over a relatively straitened Internet connection and processed by a relatively limited home computer.

The article is by by Avi Bar Zeev, one of the early developers of the program (when it was still Keyhole Viewer):

After reading an article called "How Google Earth Works" on the generally great site HowStuffWorks.com, it became apparent that the article was more of a "how cool it is" and "heres how to use it" than a "how Google Earth works."

So I thought there might be some interest, and despite some valid intellectual property concerns, here we are, with "part one" of explaining how at least part of Google Earth works.

Long-life Flash memory offers 100 million rewrites

Japanese scientists have developed a new form of Flash memory that could alleviate all our fears about just how long our Flash memory will last. These new memory chips, called ferroelectric Nand Flash (FNF), can be written up to 100 million times, compared to todays Flash memory that is thought to be limited to around 500,000 rewrites.

FNF has additional benefits as well. Current Flash memory is only now being produced at 30 nanometres, but FNF will work at 10 nanometres. It also uses significantly less power with todays Flash memory requiring 20 volts for rewriting, FNF needs just 6 volts.
