Full Review: Windows Vista December CTP
Love-him-hate-him Paul Thurrot has released a four part in-depth review of Vista's December CTP. "I think people are going to be surprised by how good the Windows Vista December 2005 Community Technical Preview (CTP, or build 5270) really is.
After years of painful delays and an uncertain couple of months since the last CTP, Microsoft shipped a near-feature-complete Vista build to testers this week, and the prognosis is extremely positive. From what I can see, Vista has turned the corner. The December CTP is an exciting release, stable and full of new features. In this review, I'll examine those new features, and the features that have changed since the previous CTP, build 5231"

Windows Vista comes in several different incarnations. But essentially there are two pathways -- the home user and the business user. 29.1.2007Microsoft set to release Vista Ultimate Extra games - free
Remember Vista Ultimate Extras? Well they are back according to Paul Thurrott, but this time they will be released for free in the form of two games,
Microsoft Tinker and Hold 'Em. Microsoft's failed Vista Ultimate Extras were a big promise from the company of "cutting-edge programs,
innovative services and unique publications." At least they were in Vista RTM, by the time Vista SP1 was rolled out nearly all references to Vista
Ultimate Extras were removed (shown below). Blogger Long Zheng called them the "ultimate con" at the time and in hindsight he was right. Microsoft
made several promises of more extras which resulted in the company launching UltimatePC.com which now redirects to the Vista home-page.

23.04.2008No Ultimate Extras for Windows 7
Windows Vista Ultimate had an interesting feature touted by Microsoft before it's release, named Extras. This was intended to be an added extra
for the paying the hefty price of Ultimate, to give some bonuses to those who paid for it. Unfortunately, Microsoft didn't plan it very well, and
included very few with in the release of Vista Ultimate. This led Microsoft to publicy apologizing over the matter, and to this day not a great number
have been released. This led people to wonder about Windows 7 Ultimate. Would it feature Extras, or would Microsoft not worry about them this time
around?

27.05.2006How [Vista] Ultimate Is This?
Windows Vista Ultimate is
Microsoft's operating system
with all the whiz and bang for
all users. But there is
something important missing
after all: Extended lifecycle
support. Windows Ultimate
support ends on April 10,
2012. Windows Vista Business
and Enterprise both receive
Extended Support, which means
five more years-or April 11,
2017. According to
Microsoft's Support Lifecycle
Web page, support for consumer
products ends after five
years. There is no Extended
Support option. I had always
assumed that Windows Vista
Ultimate, which Microsoft
pitches as having the most
consumer and corporate
features, would be supported
for more than five years.
Besides, Microsoft does offer
Ultimate to businesses for
volume-licensing purchase,
with caveats such as single
activation.
Laura
DiDo, an analyst with Yankee
Group, isn't surprised by the
five-year support for the
software. "Vista Ultimate is
more of a consumer purchase,"
she said. For businesses
deploying Windows Vista
Ultimate, however, the clock
already is ticking down to the
end of support. While Ultimate
may not be standard fare on
corporate desktops-even
Microsoft is standardized on
Vista Business, or so say some
employee sources-small
businesses are good candidates
for the software. Likewise are
universities. For schools with
campus wide volume-licensing
agreements, standard desktop
distribution is Office
Enterprise 2007 and Windows
Vista Ultimate.

27.02.2007Remaining Ultimate Extra Language Packs Released
We are pleased to announce the release of the remaining 19 languages packs for Windows Vista Ultimate. This Ultimate Extras release brings the total
number of language packs for use with Windows Vista Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI) to 35. Windows Vista Ultimate enables users install
multiple languages on their system and quickly switch between them by associating a system language with their login name.
MUI is
particularly useful in multilingual homes where multiple people use a single computer and choose different languages for their primary use. People who
wish to learn a new language will also find MUI to be a particularly useful feature. We are aware of a very large number of customers who have
purchased Ultimate for this feature specifically and are gratified that these customers can now realize the full benefit of Windows Vista Ultimate.
The languages we are adding today are as follows...

24.10.2007Microsoft fiddles with Vista Ultimate Assurance licensing
Microsoft is to slash the number of Vista Ultimate licences offered to members of its Software Assurance program.
Software
Assurance (SA), which allows customers to buy Microsoft products in bulk at discount prices, seems to have fallen victim to small-print policy change,
reducing Ultimate licensing to only one for every 100 seats of Vista Enterprise a company pays for.
According to
WindowsSecrets.com, a customer with fewer than 600 Vista Enterprise licences can
now only get a maximum of five copies of Ultimate.

anything and should never be trusted again.
Two months ago, after weeks of
pressuring for answers, Microsofts Windows
Ultimate group director Barry Goffe
finally
spoke out about the missing Windows Vista Ultimate Extras. As implied throughout most marketing materials including the
official website and even Window
Vistas own control panel, Ultimate Extras were suppose to be frequent and free premium products and services delivered to the customers who wanted it
all. And the truth is, customers are getting near to nothing. Although realistically not everyones equally upset at the lack of extras, some argue it
wasnt part of their choice to buy Vista Ultimate, which is fine but that doesnt help the people who did.

27.05.2007Das Keyboard Professional and Ultimate review
Depending for how long you've been using computers or how much of a geek you are, you may have heard about how old fashioned keyboards that used
mechanical key switches were immensely better and built to last. We are talking about the really old keyboards here, like the ones that shipped with
the original IBM PC in the early 80s.
Fast forward to the present day and you can easily tell priorities have changed considerably.
Internal components are usually the ones driving sales, and the mouse is often considered the more important input device. Now,
enter the Das Keyboard: the original Das Keyboard (Ultimate) that uses
totally blank keys and the Das Keyboard Professional, which adds inscriptions on the keys. We tested both versions of the product which are
essentially the same except the above, but we did this with the purpose of experiencing how the blank board could aid you becoming a touch typist per
the maker's claims.
