25.10.2007Sun's ODF plugin for MS Office now available
The Sun ODF Plug-in is an
extension to Microsoft Office
that allows it to read and
write ISO standard ODF files.
It supports Office 2000, XP,
and 2003, and works on Windows
XP and Vista. It adds to MS
Office the ability to read and
write ODF text, spreadsheet,
and presentation files (.odt,
.ods, and .odp) - the ISO
standard editions of MS Word,
Excel, and PowerPoint files.
Furthermore, ODF text
files (.odt) can be made the
default format for MS-Word
thanks to this plug-in (and
double-clicking on an ODF text
file on the desktop would
automatically open it in
MS-Word).
Addressing
the accessibility concerns of
existing MS-Office users was
one of the key reasons behind
Sun's development of the ODF
plug-in, and I have been one
of several folks involved in
testing the accessibility of
this plug-in (along with
several beta testers whose
employees with disabilities
were likewise doing
accessibility testing).

04.07.2007Who makes the most reliable laptops?
Dan Ackerman: One question we get pretty frequently is some variation on "Which laptop brand is most reliable?" It's an important question, as
laptops can be tough to fix, with pretty much no user-serviceable parts inside (yes, I'm sure you're all clever enough to pop open your laptop
chassis and tinker around; I'm talking about all the other laptop owners out there). That means if something goes wrong with your laptop, it's a
pretty much guaranteed trip to a repair center.

14.08.2007Windows Server 2008 RC2 Unlikely - Source
Windows Server 2008 is now close enough to being released to manufacturing that it's unlikely Microsoft will issue a third release candidate for the
long awaited OS, according to a source close to the company.
Windows Server 2008 is currently in RTM "escrow," which means that
the product team thinks the code is good to go but wants to tinker with it just a bit longer, said a source close to Microsoft, who requested
anonymity. "There may very well not be an RC2," said the source.

12.01.2008Bang On: Firefox, you're kind of ugly
We're all taught as kids that we should never judge a book by its cover. If you weren't, then you should have a talk with your parents.
I'm going to choose to ignore this valuable lesson, though, and say the following for everyone to read: Firefox, you're kind of ugly. I have
three browsers installed on my system. I mostly use the Firefox nightly builds for my day to day browsing, but I also have Internet Explorer for
random compatibility issues and Chrome for fulfilling my inner-geek's desire to tinker. I wish I could say that I also have Opera and Safari
installed, but Opera tends to annoy me and Safari just runs like a dog.

03.02.2009Microsoft: we did not hire Erin McNaught

09.08.2007Who uses MS Live Search?
". . . it’s mostly people that are searching for files on their own hard drive who accidentally click the ’search the net’
button." If that theory is correct almost all Live Search sessions would come from Windows systems running IE. Sure enough, they found that an
overwhelming 99.82% of all Live Search sessions are Windows machines running IE.
A 90% market share is good for something. It kept the
Live Search market at 2.4% last month. IE’s market share is 75%. If Firefox, 18% market share, users were just as likely to use Live Search as
any other search engine, you’d expect to see 18% of Live Searches on that browser.
Search is THE problem as storage capacities
grow. Microsoft’s weak showing means they aren’t going to beat Google at the current game. MS needs to put it’s substantial muscle
finding the Next Big Thing in search. It also suggests that taking over Yahoo won’t help either; they haven’t had any better luck
against Google, either!

25.09.2008Firefox developers tinker with new security protections (finally)
Developers of the Firefox browser are designing new technologies aimed at protecting users from some of the nastiest and most prevalent forms of
website attacks.
One protection is designed to minimize end users' risk to cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks and cross-site
request forgeries (CSRFs), both of which subvert basic internet security by exploiting the often misplaced web of trust that exists between two or
more different sites. The protection would allow developers of one site to explicitly define which domains are allowed to initiate or answer
cross-site requests for code, cookies and other site resources.

27.08.2007vLite 1.1.6 beta - SP Slipstream
nuhi: Service Pack Slipstream support. Consider that feature a true beta test.
vLite had a hidden Slipstream page since the
service pack betas so this was not so hard to adjust. You can see it by running older vLite with /sptest switch .
However
it stopped working on the final SP1 when MS locked it down.
So this version should work again. Try this latest one and let me know of any issues
with the Slipstream.
Of course it is always better to either capture or get a preintegrated DVD because MS said that integrating
is not recommended before SP2 is out.

31.08.2005Microsoft set to release Vista Ultimate Extra games - free
Remember Vista Ultimate Extras? Well they are back according to Paul Thurrott, but this time they will be released for free in the form of two games,
Microsoft Tinker and Hold 'Em. Microsoft's failed Vista Ultimate Extras were a big promise from the company of "cutting-edge programs,
innovative services and unique publications." At least they were in Vista RTM, by the time Vista SP1 was rolled out nearly all references to Vista
Ultimate Extras were removed (shown below). Blogger Long Zheng called them the "ultimate con" at the time and in hindsight he was right. Microsoft
made several promises of more extras which resulted in the company launching UltimatePC.com which now redirects to the Vista home-page.
