A new report out by market research firm Forrester suggests that Apple could double its market share through defections from the Windows platform alone. The firm said that much of this has to do with customers' deep distrust of Microsoft.

30.01.2008Mozilla Asks Add-On Developers to Prepare For Firefox 3.1
Mozilla has cultivated one of the most interesting and healthiest
ecosystems for extension developers around its popular Firefox browser. The problems with this, of course, is
that whenever Mozilla releases a new version of Firefox, developers have to make sure that their software is compatible. For the next release of its
browser, Mozilla aims to make sure that 90% of those add-ons that make up the top 95% of add-on usage will be compatible with the latest version of
Firefox. The release of Firefox 3.1 is still a while off, but currently only 28% of the top extensions are ready for the transition...

14.11.2008600 million Mozilla add-ons downloaded
Mozilla
Blog of Metrics announced some
interesting numbers about Firefox add-ons server by
Mozilla Add-ons:
- 4000 extensions available.
- Between 800,000 and 1 million downloads per day.
- About 4.5 million page views per day.
- About 100 million checks for updates occur every day, which represents the minimum number of add-ons currently in use. 96% of these come
from Firefox installations.
- More than 600 million add-ons (themes + extensions) have been downloaded (obviously not counting
updates).
Based on update ping logs, about 96% of Firefox users are on the 2.0 branch, 2% on 1.x and 1% have already made the jump to
the latest and greatest and for-testers-only-yet 3.0 branch.

31.01.2008Popular add-ons to Firefox are the latest criminal attack vector
Mozilla enjoys a large
development community to build
add-ons for its Firefox
browser. Now it seems all that
development might not be a
good thing. A security
researcher in Indiana has
found that the process used to
update some of these add-ons
automatically appears to be
flawed, allowing criminal
hackers to intercept the
browser's call to the
developer to see if there's a
new version available. Worse,
the most vulnerable add-ons
aren't from vendors you've
never heard of; they include
Google, Yahoo, Facebook,
LinkedIn, and other big names.
Extensions for
Firefox contain hard coded
Internet addresses for
updates. Mozilla provides free
hosting for update at
addons.mozilla.org, however,
many developers choose for
various reasons to serve the
updates themselves from
servers under their control.
The servers at
Mozilla all use the secure
https:// protocol, but since
encryption requires more
resources, many developers opt
to use the less secure, less
resource intensive http://
instead. That's where the
problem lies. ..

31.05.2007Fashion Your Firefox: Add-Ons Made Simple
The concept of Firefox add-ons, however this may sound silly to the experienced user, is still (and probably always will be) blurry to the majority of
users. Simply put, mostly people install Firefox, and browse the web. Period. They don’t want to meddle with the settings, plugins, add-ons and
whatnot.
Understanding this, Mozilla launched a new initiative - they call it “application,” but there’s no
real application to speak of here - called

Firefox. It’s a simple directory that organizes some of the best add-ons for Firefox in several easily understandable categories. This is
how Mozilla defines them...

19.02.2008Firefox leaks info useful to attackers
Mozilla's head of security yesterday confirmed a bug in Firefox that could be used by attackers to scout out a system prior to mounting a more
thorough assault. The flaw, said Window Snyder, Mozilla Corp.'s chief security officer, is in the browser's chrome protocol, she said in
response to reports of the vulnerability and the public posting of a proof-of-concept exploit. "Chrome" is the Firefox term for its user interface.
Access to a user's machine would be through one of many Firefox extensions packaged in a flat file structure, rather than collected into a single
Java archive, or .jar file, said Snyder. Several popular add-ons, including Download Statusbar and Greasemonkey, use a flat file structure. "Users
are only at risk if they have one of the 'flat' packaged add-ons installed," Snyder said on the Mozilla security blog.
