WindowBlinds 5 Brings Vista UI to XP

One of the most anticipated features in Windows Vista is its redesigned user interface that features glass-like title bars and alpha blended windows. But with the upgrade a year away, Stardock has released WindowBlinds 5 to offer Windows XP users the same capabilities right now.

Version 5 of Stardock's flagship Windows customization software has been in the works for over a year, according to company CEO Brad Wardell. Initially, Wardell's team was dubious that such features could be added without severe performance lag to Windows XP, which lacks Vista's new advanced graphics subsystem.

Gears of War PC Preview

So here I am, playing Gears of War on a widescreen Samsung TV at 1,920 x 1080 and, somehow, everything feels rather familiar. I swear I was doing just this a year ago, previewing a game that quickly came to define a console and propel the Xbox 360 into a successful holiday period. But hang on a moment, what's this? Ah, there's a keyboard and mouse in front of me as well as the familiar Xbox 360 controller. Since when did the Xbox 360 support a keyboard and mouse?

Answer is, of course, it doesn't and probably never will. This is the PC version of Gears of War and, as such, a keyboard and mouse is an essential addition. Indeed, it's an addition that posed quite a few problems for the development team, as Cliff Bleszinski, known simply as 'CliffyB' in gaming circles, attests to:

'What we actually wound up doing behind the scenes was having a lot of little tweaks to make sure that the player wasn't too empowered with the keyboard and mouse¦we didn't want the game to devolve into how quickly can I get one pixel on another pixel, because that's really not what the game is about."

Microsoft mouse to combine wireless, memory

Microsoft is preparing the Mobile Memory Mouse 8000, a laptop mouse which combines several important features. Above all is 1GB of internal memory, allowing owners to treat the 8000 as a USB flash drive. The mouse also offers not one but two wireless options: Bluetooth or 2.4GHz, the latter through the same USB port that allows file transfer. A switch flips between the two. The USB connector further offers magnetic charging through a direct connection.

The sensor is a high-resolution laser, and added controls on the mouse include a tiltwheel and two side buttons, assigned by default to "Magnifier" and "Back." Being a Microsoft mouse, the 8000 is immediately compatible with Windows Vista's Flip3D interface. It should be released in October for $159.

Happy Birthday mouse

The original mouse invention which is now in use on every office and home PC turns 40 next week. Looking like something that could take your fingers clean off, the wooden block with a single red button on top was unveiled to the world 40 years ago. Douglas Engelbart invented the mouse and worked with Bill English to build the device. In 1967, Engelbart applied for, and in 1970 he received a patent for the wooden shell with two metal wheels. In 1981, Xerox included a mouse with their Star computer system, and a few years later Apple offered one with their Macintosh system. Microsoft then made it the standard device for their Windows operating system.

Review: Microsoft Wireless Entertainment Desktop 8000

Looking for a new keyboard and mouse combo? Got a bit of spare cash? Look no further, this is the "Ultimate" keyboard and mouse combo set that Microsoft has ever created. Microsoft Releases new Mouse using a BlueTrack Sensor

The Microsoft Explorer Mouse and Explorer Mini Mouse were announced today and feature a unique technology that is making its debut in these devices. It’s called BlueTrack, and this new sensor can work on just about any surface.

In fact, BlueTrack is much more accurate on shiny surfaces than any other tech out there right now. If you don’t like using a mouse pad and find your desk has too much of a sheen for your mouse to accurately register, this technology should help you tremendously.

Microsoft developed this new tech, which sets it apart from the standard Agilent Technologies licensed laser sensors that fit in most other computer mice. This one might stick with Microsoft, and if they decide to license it, well, that would make them a bundle, especially if these two launches work out well. The Explorer Mouse will sell for $99.99 and the Explorer Mini Mouse will sell for $79.99 once they are released this November.

The past month or so has seen a fair few rumors flying about regarding new Apple computers (iMacs, MacBooks and even Mac minis), some of which supposed to be packing redesigned peripherals. Apple may extend multi-touch to computer mice

Apple Inc. has filed for a patent describing a computer mouse having a touch-sensative shell capable of accepting multi-touch finger gestures, similar to the surface of the company's iPhone handset.

"The invention relates to a configurable mouse with an extended sensing surface, which provides the mouse a customizable, programmable or adaptable way of generating inputs," Apple wrote in the filing.

A "position detection mechanism" would detect the movement of the mouse along a surface, while "a multipoint touch detection mechanism" would simultaneously gather feedback from one or more objects that are contacting or in close proximity to a substantially large portion of the grippable mouse shell. "The mouse additionally includes a controller for processing signals generated by the position detection mechanism and multipoint touch detection mechanism," Apple explained.
