15.7.2006Exclusive: Microsoft's new Anti-Virus, 'Morro', revealed
Ever since Microsoft discontinued its "OneCare" Anti-Virus suite, gossip has been flying that Microsoft would be releasing a free
Anti-Virus\Anti-Spyware tool codenamed "Morro". The software product, codenamed "Morro" after a beach in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is already being
tested by Microsoft employees and a trial version will be made available "soon". Microsoft has stated that Morro would be available by the end of
2009 at the latest. "Morro" is likely to be targeted to compete with the low end of anti-virus products from other providers, and it will not have
much of an impact on sales of full-blown security suites.

Focused on "core anti-malware protection", Morro is a streamlined solution expected in the second half of 2009 that will offer comprehensive
protection from malware, including viruses, spyware, root kits and trojans. Built on Microsoft's "award-winning malware protection engine",
Morro will definitely create a storm with it's price tag, and hopefully will deliver. In light of this announcement, Microsoft have also announced
that subscriptions to it's Windows Live OneCare subscription will be discontinued to new users effective June 30th 2009.

01.05.2009Still more questions than answers about Microsoft Morro
Mary Jo Foley: Microsoft’s announcement this week of
plans for a new, free antimalware
service and the end of life of its Windows Live OneCare product has spawned a bunch of new questions among customers, partners and industry
watchers.
While
Windows Live OneCare was no barn burner, in
terms of marketshare, Microsoft typically gives its products/services at least three releases before killing them. And
the 3.0 release of OneCare was imminent in fact, the
Microsoft Update team blogged at the end of October that
customers should expect to see it
soon.

29.10.2005OneCare Was Not a Failure, Microsoft Exec Says
Critics asserting that Windows Live OneCare didn't succeed on its own have got it wrong, according to Microsoft's chief security advisor for
the EMEA region. Roger Halbheer, in a blog posting on Monday, said it was "nonsense" for anyone to suggest that Microsoft's consumer
antimalware security solution had somehow "failed." Last month, Microsoft announced that it planned to discontinue OneCare while simultaneously
saying it would offer a free anti malware solution code-named "Morro." OneCare is priced at $49.95 per year, but Halbheer noted that many people
just cannot afford the extra amount, especially in newer and arguably poorer markets.
