Hardening Windows XP Professional
Windows XP has considerably more functionality than Windows 2000. With this functionality come more services and more potential security holes. Some of the measures undertaken by IST to reduce the risk are outlined in the extracts below. These are the security-related sections IST follows when building a Windows XP image for distribution within Academic Support.
NOTE: Most of these changes require you to sign on as an administrator.
The first and most important change to be applied is to set a password on all user accounts. Next it is very strongly advised that you do not log on with an administrative account but rather a ?User? or ?Power User? account.

Jeff Alexander: Windows 7 has some great tools for migration from previous operating systems. Some that come to mind are Deployment Imaging and
Service Management (DISM), mounting VHDs natively in the operating system and User State Migration. But one of the best features in my opinion and
many of my mates in the community is the ability to boot natively to a VHD. This gives you flexibility in your migration scenarios and is one way you

Keep Windows XP until 2009, analysts tell Microsoft
Microsoft should keep Windows XP available until at least 2009, not end the majority of sales on June 30 as currently planned, said analysts at
Gartner and The Burton Group. A good rule of thumb in any OS transition is that you have to have the original and new products available for at least
two years to handle customer needs, said Richard Jones, a Burton Group vice president and service director. But Microsoft gave customers
just 11 months in its original plan, in which new XP licenses would have ended on Dec. 31, and even the additional six months that Microsoft granted
when it changed the date to June 30 is not enough, he said.
It would be wise for XP to be available until the end of 2008,
concurred Michael Silver, a research vice president at Gartner. Even though Microsoft does a good job of addressing application compatibility, those
efforts miss homegrown applications and applications from minor and defunct software companies. Thats why a two-year transition period is more
sensible, Silver said.
