Microsoft: Vista customer satisfaction climbs

Microsoft Asia Pacific has responded to researchers' claims that enterprise chief information officers "have not warmed to the Vista operating system over the past year." The northern hemisphere researchers said that the CIOs they recently surveyed voted 11 to one against plans to implement Vista. The researchers concluded that "CIOs and other heads of IT still believe there is little business value in migrating from XP to Vista, especially in the current economic climate." Richard Francis, General Manager, Windows Client Group, Microsoft Asia Pacific, said that, overall, sales of Windows Vista licenses have passed 180 million since launch, and at least 100 million Windows Vista users have actively hit Windows Update.

Five reasons why XP will never die

Preston Gralla: Microsoft is doing its best to kill Windows XP, but that's not going to happen. No matter what the company does, the operating system will live on. Here are five reasons why XP will never die.

Enterprises want XP

There's no escaping the simple fact that enterprises have snubbed Vista, and show no signs of abandoning XP. Just a few days ago, Forrester said that a survey of 50,000 enterprise users found that throughout 2007, Windows XP use remained at a steady 89%. Vista grew from zero to 6% in that same time, but that came about because users moved from Windows 2000 to Vista, not from XP to Vista. Don't expect corporations to switch to Vista from XP in 2008.

Vista or XP? How about both?

Scott Lowe: Now that Windows Vista SP1 is peeking out from around the e-corner, many śpre-SP1 adverseť organizations will probably begin the process of evaluting Vista in their organizations. However, for the foreseeable future, there will be those that swear by Windows XP and its stability and performance. So, whos right? Why not both?

As much as it will pain some to admit it, Vista does have some redeeming qualities. And, for others, Windows XP continues“and will continue“to serve a very useful purpose in the enterprise. So, what are some of the situations in which it might make sense to run both Windows Vista and Windows XP in the organization? And, what are the challenges involved in doing so?

Desktop OS, Hold the Vista

Exclusive eWEEK research indicates that Microsoft's desktop Windows operating system is a rousing success.

Vista?

No, XP.

In a survey conducted by Ziff Davis Enterprise Editorial Research for eWEEK of enterprise IT professionals, just 2 percent of respondents said that Vista was the primary desktop operating system at their companies, while 92 percent indicated that XP was their primary desktop OS.

The majority of respondents also indicated that the move to Vista will not be driven by any improvements the new OS offers, but rather by new hardware.

The Windows 7 Effect

First, there was the wait for Windows Vista. Then there was the wait for Windows Vista SP1. Now many pundits are claiming that enterprise users will hold off migrating to Windows Vista and wait for the release of Windows 7.

How can Microsoft counter this? By leaking information about Windows 7 of course!

Microsofts been having a tough time of late convincing people (important people, such as system admins and those with their hand on the check book) that Windows Vista is the future. Part of the problem is that Windows Vista has been dogged by high profile śissuesť relating to compatibility, speed and reliability “ things that people consider important in an operating system.

Symantec: Enterprise customers are "not yet comfortable with Vista"

In the latest disappointing turn for Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system, a Symantec executive said Monday that only a small percentage of the security software company's large enterprise customers have upgraded their corporate PCs to Vista.

eWEEK Survey: Vista? Gimme XP

Joe Wilcox: Two operating systems are holding back Windows Vista adoption: Windows XP andeh, wellVista.

A new eWEEK enterprise survey validates many of this blog's perspectives about Windows Vista. XP stands in the way, and enterprises are hugely underwhelmed by successor Vista.

While consistent with other Vista adoption surveys, eWEEK's study makes an important distinction between primary and secondary operating systems and puts them in context of small, midsize and large business Vista migration plans. The distinction is vital to understanding businesses' real response to Vista.

Why Vista? Good Question

Debra Donston: In a survey conducted by Ziff Davis Enterprise Editorial Research for eWEEK, respondents indicated that they have been underwhelmed by Microsoft Windows Vista. And, it seems the future of Windows is ... XP?

Vista? What Vista? One year after Vistas release, just 2 percent of respondents said the OS is the primary desktop OS at their company. A whopping 92 percent said Windows XP was the primary desktop OS.

And it seems that enterprises are planning on sticking with what they have for the foreseeable future: 72 percent of respondents said that the OS theyre currently using is the one they expect to be using in 2009. Looks like XP has a longer life than Microsoft plannedor wanted.

No Enterprise Thaw for Vista

eWEEK research shows that negative perception of the Windows Vista operating system is growing.

If Windows Vista were a person, it would have an inferiority complex. Not since Windows ME has a Microsoft operating system seen such cool business reception. Indeed, research shows that many enterprises hope to leapfrog Vista altogether.

OEMs None Too Happy with 'Vista Effect'

It's a challenge to find signs that anyone other than Redmond will say that the uptake of Windows Vista is going gangbusters. A couple of weeks ago, computer maker Acer took the opportunity to directly bash Vista when it had to lower profit forecasts. Customers just weren't interested.

Today, Tom's Hardware reports that a poll of resellers found a serious lack of enthusiasm for the operating systems effect on business since the enterprise launch in November. All segments of buyers, the OEMs say, want to wait. Problems with drivers and software compatibility, not to mention necessary hardware upgrades, have put the kibosh on a rush to roll out the operating system. In fact, tellingly enough, if theyre not ordering XP-loaded machines (or cant for some reason), theyre sometimes rebuilding Vista machines with an XP machine. Now thats rejection.

And a NotebookReview.com piece says you can see that this rejection is real by looking at a few other details. Dell and HP offer XP and Linux systems to both consumer and enterprise markets because theyre selling. Actually, theyre not just selling, theyre first being requested by customers, so its a trend that doesnt show signs of slowing...

Windows 7 Compatibility Issues May Mar Enterprise Adoption

eWEEK Labs' early tests of Windows 7 RC 1 show that the operating system installs and runs quickly and efficiently; is highly polished for this stage of development; already supports a wide array of hardware; and is obviously rich with security, connectivity and usability features when compared with either Windows Vista or XP. However, Microsoft's method for dealing with application compatibility--Windows XP Mode for Windows 7, or XPM--leaves something to be desired.

Windows XP still powering 71 percent of business PCs

More than two years after the Windows Vista launch, XP is still the dominant business PC operating system in North America and Europe.

Windows Vista “finally appears ready to dethrone XP” as the operating-system choice for enterprise PCs, trumpeted a new Forrester Research report released on January 30. But the report, based on a survey of 962 IT decision makers, didn’t do much to bolster Vista’s image in the market. From the report by Forrester analyst Benjamin Gray...
