30GB Zunes failing due to software glitch

According to hundreds of reports from users worldwide, 30GB Zunes are freezing and locking up due to what appears to be a new years date bug. One poster summarized the issue on Microsoft's support forums, "At exactly 2am CDT (12am PDT), the docked Zune made the "unplugged from USB port" bong-noise and went to the boot-up screen with the 100% loading bar...and froze. At 2:30am CDT, I decided to check the other Zune. Turned it on and...frozen at the 100% loading screen." It appears as though only 30GB Zunes are currently affected and some reports indicate that only Zunes with the latest firmware are affected, but this hasn't yet been confirmed.

Microsoft to issue fix for Zune glitch

Sometime in the middle of next month, Microsoft plans to issue a firmware update designed to fix a glitch that is causing some owners of its Zune music player to experience skipping when playing songs purchased from Microsoft's online store. Zune marketing director Jason Reindorp said the downloadable update will not offer any major feature updates to the player but it will " improve overall software reliability and efficiency ".

Reindorp said the Zune, which debuted in November, held its number two spot in hard drive-based digital music players in January, citing NPD numbers that give Microsoft 9.9% of the market. Reindorp added: " We believe this toehold in the market will enable us to make a deeper footprint as time goes on and we're committed to expanding the Zune offering ." He declined to say when the company might add more devices or start selling video content, adding that Redmond is focused on making the music experience on the current device the best it can be.

Zune 2: An intimate conversation with the Zune team

Cesar Menendez, a Microsoft employee working on Zune, had some interesting things to note when Channel 10 interviewed him. It turns out that the newly released Zune 4 ($150), Zune 8 ($200) and Zune 80 ($250), the names of which you may have guessed correspond to the device capacity in GB, aren't the only part of the Zune experience that received a revamp. The Zune software and the Zune Marketplace have been recoded from the ground up. Cesar also throws out a statistic: the Zune Marketplace now has 3 million tracks available, 1 million of which are DRM-free.
