Microsoft Update now works with IE7

When Internet Explorer 7 Beta released to testers it left testers with a broken Windows Update that wouldn't load properly, disabling the ability to update Windows with critical patches that have been released since the end of July. This seems to of been fixed and on my PC it even redirects to Microsoft Update before my chosen homepage is loaded.

Intel and Nvidia Skirmish Over Enthusiast Memory

This week, memory module manufacturer Corsair announced a new set of high-performance DDR3 modules that fit Intel's Extreme Memory specification. These modules have additional overclocking profiles built into the SPD (serial presence detect) ROM on the memory module, which allows simple and reliable overclocking of memory. Intel Extreme Memory is intended for the upcoming release of high-end desktop motherboards using Intel's X38 chipset.

Intel Extreme Memory is similar in concept to SLI Ready Memory (aka "Extended Performance Profiles, or EPP) developed by Nvidia and, coincidentally, Corsair. However, the way the Intel Extreme profiles are burned into SPD differs from the way Nvidia has specified EPP.

The next generation of EPP, dubbed EPP 2.0, is in the works, but will also differ from Intel Extreme Memory. EPP 2.0 will add DDR3 support for unannounced Nvidia chipsets.

When asked if this might increase buyer confusion, Corsair Vice President of Marketing Jack Peterson noted that the company planned an educational campaign, using price breaks and bundling to steer users to the right memory and motherboard combination. Peterson also suggested that the company was investigating a utility that would allow users to re-burn EPP profiles into Intel Extreme Memory and vice versa, but no final decision has been made.

Works 9.0 to come in both free and paid flavors

Heres a nice find by the folks over at Clubic.com: The Web-order form for Works 9.0.

Microsoft is still planning to offer a paid version of the next version of its consumer/home-office productivity suite. It will cost $39.95 at retail about $10 per copy less than Works 8.0.

Theres still no link or mention of the free, ad-funded version of the next version of Microsoft Works, which Satya Nadella, the head of Microsofts search and ad platform unit, said that Microsoft had released as of late last week.

I wonder if the ad-funded version of Works 9 will debut as a service, instead of software. Such an offering would make Works 9 more of a real competitor to Google Docs & Spreadsheets, in my opinion, than would a fat-client offering.

Microsoft still isnt providing any more specifics. Stay tuned.

Sparkle produces the first 80 nanometre Nvidia card

MANY businesses in Europe will be closed from Monday till probably January the 3rd 2007. That hasn't stopped Sparkle from announcing its Calibre P768 card based on Geforce 7600 GT 80nm chip. I guess Nvidia had to do it in 2006 as it promised to its investors it was supposed to shift from 90 nanometre to 80 a while ago.

The new 80 nanometre parts will end up clocked at 650MHz - 90MHz faster than the previous 7600 GT clock. The chip behind it is G73 but we don't know what Nvidia calls the new 80 nanometre ones. The memory on Sparkle card works at 1600MHz and Nvidia hasn't changed the chip memory support as it still works with 128 bit memory only. The card comes with 256MB memory and has twelve rendering pipelines. It supports PCIe 16X interface.

Mozilla software engineer Stuart Parmenter explains the new and improved inner workings of the Firefox 3 memory manager and what was involved in the quest of decreasing the browser's memory load. The Ultimate Intel Core i7 Memory Performance Guide

Today we are going to look at how various memory frequencies, timings, and configurations influence the memory bandwidth and the real-world performance of Core i7 processors. This is particularly important to not only help you get the most out of your Core i7 CPU, but to potentially save you a lot of money. After all, it is possible to configure a Core i7 processor with triple-channel memory operating at 1066, 1333 and 1600MHz, or even faster. But what are the benefits of using more aggressively clocked memory? With the new Core i7 platform, DDR3 should finally get its chance to shine. As noted before, the Core i7 features an on-die memory controller with support for triple-channel DDR3 memory.

Microsoft Works to become a free, ad-funded product

Microsofts next version of its small-business/home productivity suite, due imminently, will be free and ad-funded.

Microsoft Works 9.0 which will be the new products name, if Microsoft opts to stick with its current nomenclature might also debut at some point as Microsoft-hosted low-end productivity service, as many have been speculating. A hosted version of Works would give Microsoft a head-to-head competitor with Google Docs & Spreadsheets and other consumer- and small-business focused services, analysts have said.

For the time being, however, the new version of Works will be ad-funded, according to Satya Nadella, the newly minted Corporate Vice President of Microsofts Search & Advertising Platform Group. Nadella told me during an interview on July 27 that Microsoft recently released the new ad-funded version of Microsoft Works.

FlashMate hybrid hard drive works without Windows

New FlashMate hybrid hard drive technology has been introduced that allows data to be read, even when the computer is switched off.

This enables notebook users to access content on the hard disk drive, without having to power on the computer, in order for example to listen to MP3 files, view digital pictures, access email, etc.

The technology has been developed by SST (Silicon Storage Technology), a flash memory technology business, and Insyde Software, a provider of UEFI-based firmware, BIOS, and engineering services.

FlashMate combines hardware, firmware and software in a system application subsystem that manages a notebook computer's hard drive. It is based on SST's expertise in NAND flash controllers and memory subsystem design with Insyde Software's expertise in PC BIOS, system software and power management.

Dell, Intel, and Microsoft to push 'ReadyBoost,' Hybrid Drives

Companies including Dell, Microsoft, and Intel announced on Wednesday the formation of a new group to promote the adoption of nonvolatile memory, or NAND flash, in PC storage applications.

The Non-Volatile Memory Host Controller Interface (NVMHCI) Working Group, as it's being called, will be chaired by Intel and will provide a standard software programming interface for nonvolatile memory subsystems.

The group says the interface will be used by operating system drivers to access NAND flash memory storage in the applications such as hard drive caching and solid-state drives. Today, PCs already use this technology; "ReadyBoost" is what Microsoft calls its Vista disk caching technology that makes computers running the OS more responsive by using flash memory on a USB 2.0 drive, SD card, or other forms of flash memory. ..

Microsoft denies Sony's Vista hardware claims

Microsoft has denied Sony's claim that the current release of Vista supports neither Intel's Turbo Memory technology nor hybrid hard drives.

The spat between the companies arose after Sony revealed to ZDNet.co.uk that it would not include Turbo Memory an embedded flash memory module formerly known by its code name Robson in this summer's Vaio notebooks because Vista will not allow the benefits of Turbo Memory to be utilised until Service Pack 1 (SP1) of the operating system is released later this year.

Turbo Memory is an optional component of Intel's Centrino Pro/Duo platform (previously known as Santa Rosa), which makes use of Vista features such as ReadyBoost and ReadyDrive. These features use non-volatile "third-stage" memory alongside a computer's RAM and traditional hard drive to boost performance and start-up time. Most manufacturers are ready to release Centrino Pro notebooks that include Turbo Memory, although HP has turned it down due to worries over cost efficiency and the limitations it places on users who want to use external flash memory to boost performance...
