Suicide prevention takes a forward step

In a move to curb the alarmingly high rate of youth depression and suicide, social networking sites like Facebook, Myspace and Twitter could be scanned for signs of "at risk" behaviour. Researchers at New Zealand's Victoria University claim to have devised a program that is capable of scanning posts within social networking sites to identify keywords that could indicate that a poster is at risk of depression, self-harm, suicide or even harming others. "Our technology picks up words and phrases such as 'depressed', or 'I don't want to live anymore' or 'I want to kill somebody'", Dr Tiong-Thye Goh said.

Ministers seek curbs on internet suicide sites for teenagers

Websites which encourage vulnerable teenagers to kill themselves are to be blocked under plans by the Government to tackle the dozens of suicides that have been linked to internet chatrooms.

Ministers are alarmed that pages inciting young people to take their lives – and even giving advice on suicide methods – are too easily available online.

They are urging internet service providers (ISPs) to veto "harmful or distasteful" suicide sites, and to provide automatic links to such organisations as the Samaritans or ChildLine when users try to find information on suicide. ISPs already warn website managers that "offensive" material will be automatically taken down from the internet.

Bang On: AOL is attempting suicide

They were on top of the world. The company had the most popular instant messaging client, by far (in the United States), the largest dialup service, and one of the top audio applications. AOL had it all and now, seemingly, they are trying their hand at a slow and painful suicide. For my generation, AOL was the Internet as we all signed on for the first time. Even if you didn't use their dialup service, you absolutely had to download AOL Instant Messenger , so you could stay in contact with all of your friends. Let's face it: Cell phones were still way too expensive, so instant messages were the text messages of that time.

Word 2007 to Feature Built-in Blogging

Joe Friend has posted a rather interesting entry on his site, covering Microsoft's Office 12 Blog feature:

Stop, don't jump to the end of this post to push the comment button yet. I'm not an idiot. I'm not endorsing you commit HTML suicide. If you've ever written a post in Word 2003 or before and then copied and pasted the text into your web browser you know what I'm talking about.

Sure you can do it, but you have to run one of those HTML clean up tools so that your posts don't look mangled. Even then the HTML is not tight and clean, right?

Well no more. We've been working late into the nights and very late into our development schedule for Word 2007 and we have a special goody for all you bloggers in Beta 2 of Office 2007. That's right blog post authoring from Word. This is a very late breaking feature and is definitely beta software. That said, I hope that everyone is pleasantly surprised with where we are going with this feature.

Microsoft permitted to continue Word sales for now

Microsoft Word fans across the world can rejoice and breathe a sigh of relief today as Microsoft has won a temporary stay, allowing Word sales to continue. In August 2009, a judge ordered Microsoft to stop selling Word, its flagship word processing software and one of the main components of the Microsoft Office System. i4i sued Microsoft in March 2007 claiming that Microsoft violated its 1998 patent (No. 5,787,449) for a document system that "eliminated the need for manually embedded formatting codes." Foxconn worker commits suicide after losing iPhone prototype

Apple's a company well known for secrecy; you'll know so after having read the article we posted about it not too long ago. Though, can this obsession with secrecy actually be harmful to a human being? Digital Beat has evidence that proves that it might well be. Sun Danyong, a 25-year-old worker in technology giant Foxconn's product communications department, recently got into a bit of trouble after one of the iPhone prototypes he was meant to take care of went missing. Once news of the disappearance got out, Danyong's apartment was 'illegally searched' by employees of the company, and according to "unsubstantiated allegations" he was detained and even physically abused.

i4i: We aren't out to take Microsoft down

I4i Chairman Loudon Owen, the winner of a major injunction against Microsoft has said that his goal is not to get Microsoft Word pulled from shelves. Owen said to ZDnet on Wednesday that "he is one of the hundreds of millions of people who uses Word and the other Microsoft Office tools every day.". This should be the case seeing as the software that i4i actually offers is only an add on to Microsoft Word.
