31.12.2006Office 2007 Hold-Up Likely to
Affect Vista
Citing "performance issues",
Microsoft said last week that
it will not release Office
2007 to enterprises until
"the end of 2006". The
consumer launch will take
place some time in "early
2007".
But
David Bradshaw, an analyst
with Ovum, said: "It seems
sensible to keep Office 2007
in step with Vista, and Vista
is already delayed, so this is
not entirely surprising to
us.
"There is
wide speculation that Vista
will be delayed again, and
this would be an embarrassment
for Microsoft.
"Vista is a much more
ambitious project than Office
2007, and has already seen
several delays. Microsoft may
face the same decision again:
whether to postpone Office
2007 or launch it without
Vista."
The
analyst suggested that
delaying Office 2007 will have
a minimal impact on
Microsoft's product revenues
as most customers will buy
Office only when they need it,
for example when they upgrade
to new computers.
The rescheduling marks the
second delay to Office 2007
this year. Microsoft said in
March that it would hold back
the release to coincide with
the launch of Windows
Vista.

arrive until '07
Aiming to keep its focus on
Windows Vista, Microsoft is
now targeting 2007 for its
next Windows XP service pack
update.
In a
posting to its life cycle Web
site, Microsoft set a
preliminary date of the second

release of Windows XP Service
Pack 3 for both home and
professional editions. That
puts its debut well past the
arrival of Vista, which is
slated for the second half of
this year and later than both
outsiders and some insiders
had originally
predicted.
"We
will be releasing another
service pack for XP over the
course of the product life
cycle, and we are tentatively
targeting the second half of
2007 for release," a
Microsoft representative said
in an e-mail to CNET News.com.
"However, right now our
priority is Windows
Vista--we'll have more
information to share about the
next service pack for XP after
Windows Vista ships." ..

The Windows Vista Hardware
Assessment is a tool that will
find computers on a network
and perform a detailed
inventory of the computers
using Windows Management
Instrumentation (WMI). Through
use of the detailed inventory
data, the tool will assess and
report whether the computers
can run Windows Vista or the
2007 Microsoft Office system,
where to find drivers for
devices on the computers, and
provide recommendations for
hardware upgrades, where
appropriate.
The Windows Vista Hardware
Assessment tool does not
require the deployment of
agent software on the
computers being inventoried
and assessed. It provides a
secure, quick, and easy way to
determine which computers, in
a networked environment, are
ready for Windows Vista and
the 2007 Microsoft Office
system software.

23.05.2006Neowin at Digital Life 2007: Microsoft's Booth
Microsoft took a three pronged approach to their booth this year. They decided to focus on Vista (again), Games for Windows, and Windows Mobile.
Surprisingly, the Xbox 360 and Halo 3 were not highlighted in the least bit.
It actually surprised me to see Microsoft pushing Vista so
hard, still. Compared to last year, before Vista was released, this year's Vista display was even larger and more in your face. There were more
kiosks, sofas, and lots of Vista logos on anything that could bare one. We know about Vista, though, so let's move on.

01.10.2007Microsoft Set to Launch Vista to Businesses
At an event this Thursday at
NASDAQ in New York City,
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer
will officially launch
versions of Windows Vista,
Office 2007, and Exchange 2007
aimed at big businesses. Vista
and Office 2007 were completed
earlier this month, but
Microsoft doesn't expect to
ship Exchange until sometime
in December. A larger,
consumer-oriented launch event
for Windows Vista and Office
2007 is still scheduled for
January 30, 2007.
The timing of the business
launch event is a bit odd:
Because consumers won't be
able to get Vista-based PCs
until January, some may hold
off on new PC purchases this
holiday season. But the
versions of Vista and Office
2007 that Microsoft is
shipping starting tomorrow
will not be made available to
consumers, though news of the
launch could be confusing to
them. Instead, only businesses
with volume license agreements
with Microsoft will be able to
get the code now.

30.11.2006Poll: Many Vista Users Are Also Moving To Office 2007
A poll of IT decision makers by CDW has found that a sizable percentage of Microsoft Vista users have moved or are preparing to move to the 2007
Microsoft Office system.
Announced Wednesday, the poll surveyed 753 IT decision makers. The new poll followed up on an earlier
poll in which 29% of the respondents said they were using or evaluating Vista. Of the 29%, CDW found in the new poll that 42% have either deployed or
plan to deploy the Office system.
"Many customers deploying the 2007 Microsoft Office system are finding that the user benefits
are substantial with both Windows Vista and Windows XP," said David Cottingham, CDW's director of product and partner management, in a statement.
"The 2007 Office release graphic interface is a considerable improvement from previous Office versions, and while it is quite different at first
glance, it is more visually intuitive. After adjusting for a day or two, our customers find that they are more productive and don't want to go
back." ..

Joe Wilcox: Three out of four enterprises are deploying Office 2007 without regard for Windows Vista, according to a new IT executive survey from

The survey is the final of three CDW planned between late 2006 and late 2007. CDW commissioned Walker Information to conduct
the surveys, one before Office 2007 launched and two others in February 2007 and November 2007. After discussing the second survey, CDW asked if there
was any question I would want to ask IT decision makers. My request: Were enterprises deploying Office 2007 and Windows Vista together? I suspected
many would enterprises not, in part because Microsoft created no real synergy between the products.
