Microsoft is 30 years old today! have a look at the Microsoft Timeline
It's hard to believe that Microsoft is already 30 years old. The company that made Redmond, Washington, a household name was actually founded in 1975 in another city by two young Seattle men, one of whom was a college dropout. From this inauspicious beginning came an equally improbable vision: A personal computer on every desk and in every home. Thirty years later, it seems so obvious. But at the time, when only a handful of people knew what a personal computer was, it was a great leap of faith and daring.

some work to Gmail's default look to make it "crisper and cleaner". To customise your inbox, go to the Themes tab under Settings.

06.08.2008Slideshow in the Windows Live Photo Gallery
We didnt do much to the Slideshow feature in the Windows Live Photo Gallery, but there have been several questions coming in about this feature, so we
thought that it was worth a brief rundown of whats changed.
In a nutshell, heres how the slideshow feature works in this
release:
- XP users: Basic slideshow only (equivalent to the ˜Classic theme on Vista). No transitions, and no support for videos. The rich
themes are very dependent on the Vista graphics model, so it will take a fair amount of work to get the rich themes working on XP (more than we could
bite off for this release).
- Vista users (basic graphics hardware): The experience should be unchanged from Vista. You may see a limited
set of themes available, and may or may not see transport controls depending on the capabilities of your graphics card.
- Vista users
(premium graphics hardware): The experience should be unchanged from Vista.
We
blogged about the Vista Slideshow experience previously. Most
of this still applies (with the exception of the above notes). One exception is that although the rich themes were only available on certain Vista
SKUs, all themes are available in all Vista SKUs (again, depending on your graphics hardware).

20.09.2007Google preparing to launch theme gallery for Chrome
Last week, information was spread that Google planned to implement proper theme support within their Chrome browser. Just recently, people have
discovered, in the developer builds of the browser, that the company has built in the theme support already. It was unclear how they'd plan to
display said themes, though many suspected the obvious choice of an online gallery; now, however, TechCrunch is reporting that this has been all but
confirmed, with several themes already having been discovered. TechCrunch states that the themes will be available at this link, which has obviously
yet to go online, but you can already preview it if you have the very latest build of the Chrome browser.

20.11.2008Creating, Saving, Sharing Themes in Windows 7
Steven Sinofsky: With Windows 7 we picked a group of settings that we believe represent the most satisfying settings to broadly personalize, and would
also provide the most robust platform that maintains application compatibility, and made those easy to change. In addition we wanted to make it easy
to package up those settings so you could save and share them. We think of this as the start of bringing robust personalization (and customization)
to a broader set of customers. Katie Frigon, a program manager on the core user experience team, authored this post.

03.06.2009Official theme support now integrated in Google Chrome 3.0
The latest developer build of Chrome now includes an official option to install themes into Google Chrome. It was reported earlier this week by Neowin
that Google is preparing to launch a theme gallery. It looks like this has happened with the release of build 3.0.195.6. The option is offered under
"Personal Stuff" and has the option to "Get Themes". Pressing the button redirects you to a webpage, that shows a whole array of new themes for
Chrome. Applying the theme is as simple as pressing the "Apply Theme" button below the chosen theme, and a ".crx" file is downloaded. A restart
of Chrome is not required to apply the theme.

07.08.2009Get Yer' Windows 7 Stuff
Adaptation is something not one of us enjoys doing; changing your 'style' to make something work is something we do every day; it could easily be
avoided.
Microsoft has worked extremely hard to make Windows 7 adapt to YOU, and make it work how and when YOU want it to. The last step
in the magical transformation of Windows, is the ability to theme without patching system files. When the interface feels right, working and playing
becomes much more fun.
"Give your PC a personal touch" says Microsoft:
They now provide free downloads of themes,
wallpapers, and certified gadgets all compiled by Microsoft staff.
By clicking on a theme, it will be downloaded and installed, changing
familiar things such as the wallpaper, sounds, icons, and the Aero glass color.
The gadgets are split into two categories: the regular
windows gadgets, and the emerging Sideshow gadgets. From traffic maps, to a PowerPoint remote control, they've got a decent selection in there. The
best part? They're all Microsoft-certified.
Hopefully in time, they will allow further customization of the themes especially, without
patching any files. (Maybe this could be some sort of extra in the best edition?)
For now though, we'll have to live with a wide range
of colors, matching wallpapers, and gadgets to go with it. It's a step in the right direction; let's hope it takes us somewhere.

10.08.2008Windows 7 Starter Edition details confirmed
As was reported here on Neowin, there was speculation that Microsoft were planning to remove the application limit on Windows 7 Starter Edition.
According to The Windows Blog, Microsoft have confirmed that the "3 applications at a time" limit that hobbled earlier versions of the Starter
Edition has been removed for Windows 7. Now the only effective limit on the number of programs you can run concurrently is set by the amount of your
memory. Windows 7 Starter Edition will have other limits, however, in order to differentiate it from other versions of the OS. "Windows 7 Starter
does not include: * Aero Glass, meaning you can only use the "Windows Basic" or other opaque themes.

Rafael Rivera from Within Windows has announced that UxStyle Core beta now available for download. To give us some information on what UxStyle Core
is, we'll start with a little history. Back in the Windows XP days, users were able to modify a system file called Uxtheme.dll and create custom
.msstyle files, thus creating their own desktop themes to replace the default "Luna" theme. However, over time, patching went from just one file
to multiple files and repatching was necessary when Microsoft would update the Uxtheme.dll files.
