Microsoft have updated their Windows 7 site with a download link for the Windows 7 beta. It would appear from the posting that Microsoft is currently
readying site updates and download servers for the imminent release of the Windows 7 beta. Yesterday, German site Winfuture claimed that the beta
would be released today and this could confirm the sites claims. The download link is currently inaccessible. It's entirely possible that once
the page is live it will simply be a sign up page to register your interest. Microsoft will not comment on the exact date and a Microsoft official
confirmed the beta is still targetted for early 2009.

19.12.2008Windows Live Messenger Beta
NOT Public
The confusion probably started
after a red colored "Windows
Live Messenger" text link
appeared on MSN UK's homepage
by the end of last week.
It links to a
product
page still showing screenshots
of older Beta-versions and
claiming that "the new
Windows Live Messenger Beta is
<...> as always <...> free to
download".
Indeed, it is free to
download but you still have to
sign up for the trial first
(don't worry if your
country's not listed) and
wait a couple of days before
you get invited.
Admittedly, if a beta
version is being used already
by about one million users the
definition of "public" is
contestable. But let's just
conclude that there's still
NO instantly
available direct download link
for just anybody.

Windows Live Mail Update Released
After ignoring the product for
over three months, after the
managed beta program ended
about a month ago, Microsoft,
with great surprise, released
a few minutes ago, a final
visual update to Windows Live
Mail beta, though what's
surprising is that it still
sports the beta tag.
The update mostly
features changes to the user
interface that were featured
in the old concept
screenshots, though in a much
less cluttered way: the basic
layout stays the same as
before, though it includes the
Windows Live Orb, the
"flare" header in one colour
scheme, and it is overall less
white throughout the UI. Other
changes, if present, are
currently unknown since the
team didn't blog about it
yet.
Since all
servers haven't been updated
just yet, a working link is
provided below.

New "Network Direct" RDMA Interface Available with Windows Server 2008
Phil Pennington: Windows HPC Server 2008 introduces a new low-latency RDMA network API known as "Network Direct". This RDMA interface in
addition to and distinct from the existing "Winsock Direct" interface. The Network Direct interface introduces several advantages over
Winsock Direct including no dependency on the Winsock stack and much lower latency metrics. MS MPI is being developed to take advantage of this
new interface.
This means that Infiniband vendors, for instance, will need to provide HCA Network Direct providers in
addition to (or perhaps instead of) the Winsock Direct providers published previously. Consequently, development is underway by both Microsoft
and partners to enable full support for the entire network stack.
For programmers, the Network Direct API provides a model
similar to the User Mode Driver Framework (UMDF). MS MPI will be the first user-mode application to leverage Network Direct.

Windows Server "7" feature: Direct Connect
Microsoft IT (the internal IT organisation) is currently running a pilot called "Direct Connect". Direct Connect is like Outlook Anywhere where you
connect to the internal Exchange Server from outside the corporate network without a VPN connection but through RPC_over_HTTPs) Direct connect uses
IPv6 and IPSec to build a tunnel from outside the coprporate network to any resource that needs to access internal network (fileshares, LOB
applications) This pilot will end up as feature in the server edition of Windows 7. It will require a trusted identity like smartcards.

Microsoft Vista SP2 beta: Nothing new has been added (yet)
If you install the beta of Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) expecting to see visible changes to your version of Vista, you'll be sorely
disappointed. At least in this initial beta, all the changes are under the hood, and even they are far from earth-shaking. Microsoft says that it has
fixed compatibility problems with the third-party Spy Sweeper and ZoneAlarm security applications, enhanced hardware support for Direct X, improved
Wi-Fi connections after a system resumes from sleep, improved Windows Search, added support for the newest Bluetooth specification (2.1) and rolled up
all previous Vista updates.
