IT managers share Windows Vista install plans

Few Windows shops had plans for Windows Vista migrations in 2007, and it appears that there may also be little interest well into next year.

Of more than 200 responses from IT managers to an online survey conducted by SearchWinIT.com, 37.3 % said they had no plans whatsoever in place to install Vista, while 7.6 % said they would begin adding the new desktop OS in the first quarter of 2008, and 8.5 % expect to begin the upgrade in Q2 2008.

Application compatibility was the primary concern for the IT shops, with 55.2 % citing it as the biggest Vista upgrade issue. This was in line with the runner-up concern, third-party application support, which 48.5 % said is stalling their migration plans.

February 27, 2008: Microsoft plans a triple-play launch

Microsoft announced at its partner conference on July 10 that it will launch Windows Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008 together in a single launch on February 27, 2008, in Los Angeles.

Microsoft officials have been saying for a few months now that while the company planned to release to manufacturing Windows Server 2008 (the product formerly known as Longhorn Server) before the end of 2007, it planned to launch Windows Server 2008 officially some time in early 2008.

(According to my sources, Microsoft is planning to RTM Windows Server 2008 as well as Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 in November. All Microsoft will say publicly about its Windows Server 2008 RTM schedule is its on track to RTM before the end of the year. It wont say anything on its plans for Vista SP1 RTM.)

Meanwhile, Beta 2 of Visual Studio 2008 (code-named Orcas) is expected some time this summer with the RTM due sometime in either late 2007 or early 2008. Microsoft also recently released a private Community Technology Preview release of SQL Server 2008, code-named Katmai. Earlier this year, Microsoft said to expect SQL Server 2008 to RTM some time in 2008.

Research indicates Windows Server 2008 could flop

Research indicates that Windows Server 2008 could be just as big a flop in the enterprise as Windows Vista. In a survey of 687 IT professionals conducted by Network World, half of them said that they have no plans whatsoever to upgrade to Windows Server 2008 at any time after it launches in February.

This compares to 13 percent that said they would upgrade in the first 12 months after its release; 9 percent that plan to upgrade 13 - 24 months after release: a mere 8% that say they'll roll out Windows Server 2008 after they finish rolling out Vista; and 19% that say they have just begun to think about their plans.

Survey: Vista Adoption Weakens, as IT Pros Eye Apple

A KACE-sponsored survey on Windows Vista adoption represents more bad news for Microsoft's flagship operating system, even as Microsoft prepares to pour an estimated $300 million into a new Vista marketing campaign -- news that was announced at Microsoft's 2008 Worldwide Partner Conference.

<...> This survey found a slip in Windows Vista deployment plans, with 60 percent of respondents saying that they had "no plans to deploy Vista at this time," compared with 53 percent in the 2007 survey.

The respondents also appeared to reject the "common wisdom" that people were simply waiting for Service Pack 1 to deploy Vista, with the idea that initial bugs and incompatibilities would be worked out by then. A solid 92 percent of survey respondents said that "Vista Service Pack 1 has not changed their plans for Vista deployment."

Businesses delay Vista plans until 2009

CIO Jury: "It could be a long wait"

Businesses remain unconvinced about the benefits of moving to Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system and most are delaying any plans to upgrade until 2009 at the earliest.

One year after the business launch of Vista, only one of silicon.com's 12-strong CIO Jury IT user panel said they had plans to move to the new OS in 2008.

Most plan to stick with the stability of Windows XP and implement Service Pack 3 for that OS before they even start thinking about Vista.

Adrian Hughes, head of IS for insurance company Amlin, said: "We are sticking with XP and look to take XP SP3 in 2009. Vista not until 2011, unless there is a good reason to migrate, by which time the next OS may be out so we would then skip a generation."
