While Microsoft's chairman Bill Gates told security professionals that security is job number one on Tuesday, he's leaving it up to developers like those working up the next version of Internet Explorer to make it happen.
Internet Explorer 7 (IE 7), said Gary Schare, director of product management for IE, will reduce the chance that spyware spreaders can use silent drive-by downloads to infect PCs with malicious software.

7.10.2008Microsoft releases new Ultimate Extras - Microsoft Tinker
Microsoft has silently released 3 updates for Windows Ultimate users today.
Microsoft Tinker, Ultimate Extra sounds from Microsoft Tinker
and Windows DreamScene Content Pack #4 are all available on Windows Update now.
Microsoft Tinker is a puzzle based game where players get a
set amount of moves to move a robot around a puzzle and solve the level. The DreamScene content pack adds some new high definition videos for use on
the desktop and the sound pack allows you to set your sound scheme to that of Microsoft Tinker.
Previously, Microsoft
released a set of extras back in April and promised more offerings in the future. Like the update in April there has been no official announcement
that these extras have been released on UltimatePC.com or Microsoft's main site.

24.09.2008Windows Server 2008 RC2 Unlikely - Source
Windows Server 2008 is now close enough to being released to manufacturing that it's unlikely Microsoft will issue a third release candidate for the
long awaited OS, according to a source close to the company.
Windows Server 2008 is currently in RTM "escrow," which means that
the product team thinks the code is good to go but wants to tinker with it just a bit longer, said a source close to Microsoft, who requested
anonymity. "There may very well not be an RC2," said the source.

12.01.2008Microsoft set to release Vista Ultimate Extra games - free
Remember Vista Ultimate Extras? Well they are back according to Paul Thurrott, but this time they will be released for free in the form of two games,
Microsoft Tinker and Hold 'Em. Microsoft's failed Vista Ultimate Extras were a big promise from the company of "cutting-edge programs,
innovative services and unique publications." At least they were in Vista RTM, by the time Vista SP1 was rolled out nearly all references to Vista
Ultimate Extras were removed (shown below). Blogger Long Zheng called them the "ultimate con" at the time and in hindsight he was right. Microsoft
made several promises of more extras which resulted in the company launching UltimatePC.com which now redirects to the Vista home-page.

11.11.2009Who makes the most reliable laptops?
Dan Ackerman: One question we get pretty frequently is some variation on "Which laptop brand is most reliable?" It's an important question, as
laptops can be tough to fix, with pretty much no user-serviceable parts inside (yes, I'm sure you're all clever enough to pop open your laptop
chassis and tinker around; I'm talking about all the other laptop owners out there). That means if something goes wrong with your laptop, it's a
pretty much guaranteed trip to a repair center.

08.05.2008Windows 7 beta download imminent?
Microsoft have updated their Windows 7 site with a download link for the Windows 7 beta. It would appear from the posting that Microsoft is currently
readying site updates and download servers for the imminent release of the Windows 7 beta. Yesterday, German site Winfuture claimed that the beta
would be released today and this could confirm the sites claims. The download link is currently inaccessible. It's entirely possible that once
the page is live it will simply be a sign up page to register your interest. Microsoft will not comment on the exact date and a Microsoft official
confirmed the beta is still targetted for early 2009.

19.12.2008Open source, Microsoft models both wrong, Simonyi said
Turns out open source and Microsoft have more in common than thought: both have it wrong, one prominent software developer claimed at MITs Emerging
Technologies conference.
Charles Simonyi, the Hungarian-born developer of Microsoft Word who later became a pilot, cosmonaut and
co-founder of Intentional Software, said modern software developers whether they are programming under open source or proprietary models of
development focus too much on the end result and too little on refining the process of development.
Using scrambled eggs as a
metaphor for a finished software application, Simonyi said the current crop of developers tinker too much, almost in obsessive compulsive fashion,
on tweaking and rearranging applications to fix or improve them, instead of finetuning the process by which they are created.

27.09.2007Bang On: Firefox, you're kind of ugly
We're all taught as kids that we should never judge a book by its cover. If you weren't, then you should have a talk with your parents.
I'm going to choose to ignore this valuable lesson, though, and say the following for everyone to read: Firefox, you're kind of ugly. I have
three browsers installed on my system. I mostly use the Firefox nightly builds for my day to day browsing, but I also have Internet Explorer for
random compatibility issues and Chrome for fulfilling my inner-geek's desire to tinker. I wish I could say that I also have Opera and Safari
installed, but Opera tends to annoy me and Safari just runs like a dog.

10.11.2009What Silverlight can do for the Microsoft Download Center
If you’ve visited the Microsoft Download Center in the last month or so, you’ve probably been prompted with a pop-up asking you to try the
Silverlight version of the site. Currently in beta, the new version of the MDC is meant to improve the user experience. Even if Silverlight has hit
version 1.0, there is still no Linux, no Opera and no x64 support, which definitely hinders on who can visit the site. It is currently unclear whether
Microsoft will completely replace the current site with the Silverlight version, but if that were to happen, it definitely would not be soon.
Here’s a detailed article about what Qixing Zheng, from Microsoft Canada, believes Silverlight can do for the Microsoft Download Center.

Google is considering allowing users of its search engine to tinker with query results by re-ranking them and commenting on them.

27.08.2008Firefox developers tinker with new security protections (finally)
Developers of the Firefox browser are designing new technologies aimed at protecting users from some of the nastiest and most prevalent forms of
website attacks.
One protection is designed to minimize end users' risk to cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks and cross-site
request forgeries (CSRFs), both of which subvert basic internet security by exploiting the often misplaced web of trust that exists between two or
more different sites. The protection would allow developers of one site to explicitly define which domains are allowed to initiate or answer
cross-site requests for code, cookies and other site resources.

21.05.2008Exclusive: Windows 7 RC download goes live
The wait is over folks, Microsoft has published the download page for the Windows 7 RC. As we noted earlier, the download was scheduled to launch
tomorrow and was to be available worldwide. Coming straight from the download page, here are Microsoft's notes for the release candidate: You
don't need to rush to get the RC. The RC will be available at least through July 2009 and we're not limiting the number of product keys, so
you have plenty of time. Watch the calendar. The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every
two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start.
