Microsoft is 30 years old today! have a look at the Microsoft Timeline
It's hard to believe that Microsoft is already 30 years old. The company that made Redmond, Washington, a household name was actually founded in 1975 in another city by two young Seattle men, one of whom was a college dropout. From this inauspicious beginning came an equally improbable vision: A personal computer on every desk and in every home. Thirty years later, it seems so obvious. But at the time, when only a handful of people knew what a personal computer was, it was a great leap of faith and daring.

24.09.2008Microsoft releases new Ultimate Extras - Microsoft Tinker
Microsoft has silently released 3 updates for Windows Ultimate users today.
Microsoft Tinker, Ultimate Extra sounds from Microsoft Tinker
and Windows DreamScene Content Pack #4 are all available on Windows Update now.
Microsoft Tinker is a puzzle based game where players get a
set amount of moves to move a robot around a puzzle and solve the level. The DreamScene content pack adds some new high definition videos for use on
the desktop and the sound pack allows you to set your sound scheme to that of Microsoft Tinker.
Previously, Microsoft
released a set of extras back in April and promised more offerings in the future. Like the update in April there has been no official announcement
that these extras have been released on UltimatePC.com or Microsoft's main site.

24.09.2008Windows Server 2008 RC2 Unlikely - Source
Windows Server 2008 is now close enough to being released to manufacturing that it's unlikely Microsoft will issue a third release candidate for the
long awaited OS, according to a source close to the company.
Windows Server 2008 is currently in RTM "escrow," which means that
the product team thinks the code is good to go but wants to tinker with it just a bit longer, said a source close to Microsoft, who requested
anonymity. "There may very well not be an RC2," said the source.

Remember Vista Ultimate Extras? Well they are back according to Paul Thurrott, but this time they will be released for free in the form of two games,
Microsoft Tinker and Hold 'Em. Microsoft's failed Vista Ultimate Extras were a big promise from the company of "cutting-edge programs,
innovative services and unique publications." At least they were in Vista RTM, by the time Vista SP1 was rolled out nearly all references to Vista
Ultimate Extras were removed (shown below). Blogger Long Zheng called them the "ultimate con" at the time and in hindsight he was right. Microsoft
made several promises of more extras which resulted in the company launching UltimatePC.com which now redirects to the Vista home-page.

11.11.2009Who makes the most reliable laptops?
Dan Ackerman: One question we get pretty frequently is some variation on "Which laptop brand is most reliable?" It's an important question, as
laptops can be tough to fix, with pretty much no user-serviceable parts inside (yes, I'm sure you're all clever enough to pop open your laptop
chassis and tinker around; I'm talking about all the other laptop owners out there). That means if something goes wrong with your laptop, it's a
pretty much guaranteed trip to a repair center.

08.05.2008Open source, Microsoft models both wrong, Simonyi said
Turns out open source and Microsoft have more in common than thought: both have it wrong, one prominent software developer claimed at MITs Emerging
Technologies conference.
Charles Simonyi, the Hungarian-born developer of Microsoft Word who later became a pilot, cosmonaut and
co-founder of Intentional Software, said modern software developers whether they are programming under open source or proprietary models of
development focus too much on the end result and too little on refining the process of development.
Using scrambled eggs as a
metaphor for a finished software application, Simonyi said the current crop of developers tinker too much, almost in obsessive compulsive fashion,
on tweaking and rearranging applications to fix or improve them, instead of finetuning the process by which they are created.

27.09.2007Bang On: Firefox, you're kind of ugly
We're all taught as kids that we should never judge a book by its cover. If you weren't, then you should have a talk with your parents.
I'm going to choose to ignore this valuable lesson, though, and say the following for everyone to read: Firefox, you're kind of ugly. I have
three browsers installed on my system. I mostly use the Firefox nightly builds for my day to day browsing, but I also have Internet Explorer for
random compatibility issues and Chrome for fulfilling my inner-geek's desire to tinker. I wish I could say that I also have Opera and Safari
installed, but Opera tends to annoy me and Safari just runs like a dog.

27.08.2008Firefox developers tinker with new security protections (finally)
Developers of the Firefox browser are designing new technologies aimed at protecting users from some of the nastiest and most prevalent forms of
website attacks.
One protection is designed to minimize end users' risk to cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks and cross-site
request forgeries (CSRFs), both of which subvert basic internet security by exploiting the often misplaced web of trust that exists between two or
more different sites. The protection would allow developers of one site to explicitly define which domains are allowed to initiate or answer
cross-site requests for code, cookies and other site resources.

25.09.2008Modded Xbox 360s Banned From Xbox Live
Gamers with modified Xbox 360
consoles are getting a nasty
surprise: their consoles are
being blocked from accessing
Microsoft's Xbox Live
service.
Until last week,
modifications to the console
were undetectable by
Microsoft, allowing
enterprising gamers to open up
the next-generation console
and tinker with its settings.
However, a software update has
seemed to change all that.
Microsoft
can now test for the existence
of a hack that allows the
console to played burned
versions of games, as well as
if the game in the drive
itself is a legitimate copy.
If these items are found, the
user is then banned from Xbox
Live.
Some are saying the rise in
copying has much to do with
the highly anticipated Halo 3
beta -- many may be copying
the game Crackdown for the
sole purpose of gaining access
to the beta, which is also
included on the disc.

21.05.2007Assessing the risks and cost of encryption
With major data breaches occurring on a regular basis, encryption vendors are going into hyperdrive, touting the need for their products. However,
encryption is only one aspect of protecting your sensitive data, and a new attack shows that it may not be enough.
Recently, the
security research group at
Princeton University published a report on its success at recovering data from an encrypted disk image on a laptop. This caused a good bit of
consternation and some breathless coverage in the press (as with this
New York Times story that got the headline "
Researchers Find Way to Steal Encrypted Data"), leading to
some speculation that this meant on-disk encryption was simply not worth the effort. (Read more on
Laptop Encryption Strategies.)

09.04.2008Revisiting Microsofts Vista PC concept
When Microsoft shipped the “
Microsoft industrial design toolkit”
to over 70 original equipment manufacturers last year before the launch of Windows Vista, Microsoft hoped to get rid of the “
beige box” ideology and turn PCs into objects of desire. More than a year on, as charming
John Hodgeman might be, the sad fact is that most OEM PCs today with a few
premium exceptions are still bulky boxes with just as many
stickers are
wires connected.
It might probably
take more than a year for an industry thriving around function over form to do the opposite, but Apple’s
iPod and
iMac demonstrates most people are even willing to sell
body-parts to look good. Apart from the minority who likes to tinker with the hardware, there’s no reason why the PC can’t be more compact
and integrated.
Today I stumbled across
Carbon Design Group’s portfolio, a
Seattle-based industrial design company who’s worked on many Microsoft projects including the
X360 controller,
racing wheel,
LifeCam,
Laser Desktop 6000 and
Windows Home Server. One other was the “
Vista PC“. A set of 9 images provide a pretty good example of what Carbon and
Microsoft envisioned for the “Vista-generation” of computers.

16.09.2007The $100 laptop now the $188 laptop
Leaders of the non-profit One Laptop Per Child that was spun out of Massachusetts Institute of Technology have acknowledged that the devices are now
slated to cost $188 when mass production begins this fall. The last announced price was $176 and $100 was touted as a long-term goal.
Spokesman George Snell blamed the latest increase on a variety of factors, including currency fluctuations and rising costs of such components as
nickel and silicon. He said the project was committed to keeping the price from rising above $190. The laptops are being made by Taiwan's Quanta
Computer Incorporated, the world's leading manufacturer of portable computers.
One Laptop Per Child says it has commitments for at least 3
million of its rugged "XO" computers; among the nations that have shown interest are Brazil, Libya, Thailand and Uruguay. While less than $200
for an innovative, wireless-enabled, hand-powered laptop is a relative bargain, a price nearly twice than what was promised could make it harder for
OLPC to sign up international governments as customers. Those governments are expected to give the computers to children for them to keep and tinker
with, which the project's founders believe will cause critical thinking and creativity to blossom.
