Microsoft is 30 years old today! have a look at the Microsoft Timeline

It's hard to believe that Microsoft is already 30 years old. The company that made Redmond, Washington, a household name was actually founded in 1975 in another city by two young Seattle men, one of whom was a college dropout. From this inauspicious beginning came an equally improbable vision: A personal computer on every desk and in every home. Thirty years later, it seems so obvious. But at the time, when only a handful of people knew what a personal computer was, it was a great leap of faith and daring.

Microsoft Releases Windows SideShow SDK

"We've been saying 'It's coming' for a very long while,'" the post concedes. But, "It's here," the Windows SideShow Device SDK for .NET Micro Framework v1.4.

Frankly, I've waited a lot longer for Windows SideShow devices, which are few at best. Maybe the new SDK will help, but I'm a born skeptic (and, yes, that is a non sequitur).

Windows SideShow essentially is light-weight Vista for tiny screens (yeah, yeah, that's a simplification). Early days, Microsoft pitched SideShow for displays outside laptops providing calendaring, contact and other information. More recently, SideShow is finding niche appeal for use in other devices, such as TV remotes.

Why Vista Sideshow is Still on the Sidelines

Sideshow-compatible gadgets and hardware compatible with Microsoft's external display standard have been slow to arrive. One of Windows Vista's most intriguing new features has yet to fulfill its promise, as Microsoft Corp. wrestles with issues of hardware support and developer scarcity.

Windows SideShow was introduced with Windows Vista as a way for time-pressed users to find out the weather forecast, check for new e-mail, see the status of an eBay bid and more, all without turning on their PCs.

SideShow enables a secondary screen -- such as the 2.8-in. color LCD display mounted on the outside of AsusTek Computer Inc.'s W5Fe notebook computer -- to display information from special-purpose mini-applications called "gadgets" that reside on Vista's desktop.

ASUS announces SideShow notebook

The Asustek W5Fe has been officially announced by ASUS as the world's first SideShow-enabled notebook. Thanks to an extra "bulge" on its 12.1" widescreen lid, it sports a 2.8" SideShow QVGA auxiliary display and 1GB of NAND flash.

According to Asustek, the SideShow display can be used to track meeting schedules, phone numbers and emails but can equally be used to play games, view photos and listen to music. Disregarding the extra display, the notebook runs on an 945GM Express chipset and an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The W5FE supports up to 1.5GB of DDR2 memory, SATA hard drives up 160GB as well as Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and 802.11a/b/g connectivity options.

A third-party provider is offering what appears to be the first support for Vista "SideShow" gadgets on Windows Mobile phones. ControlThink's ThinkRemote Community Edition lets Vista users feed content and small applications to their phones, or use their phone to control their PC, the company said.

The SideShow technology, which made its debut with the Windows Vista operating system, features gadgets -- mini-applications such as photo viewers, PowerPoint navigators, email viewers, and Media Player controllers. The gadgets run on the Vista PC, but can send information to external clients connected via USB, Bluetooth, TCP/IP, or other future protocols. Such clients include laptops, front-panel computer displays, displays embedded in keyboards, and digital picture frames, mobile phones, and other display devices.

The Ultimate Windows Vista laptop

The most visible part of Windows Vista is the Aero interface, and while we can't deny that it looks very swish we find it very hard to get excited by a shiny new GUI. Instead, we're looking forward to new Vista hardware, which includes a new use for the humble USB memory key and much, much more. So what will the ultimate Windows Vista notebook offer? Possibly the most dramatic new feature in Vista is Windows SideShow, shown here on the Asus W5Fe which will have an estimated price of £1,399 inc VAT.

You shouldn't have much trouble running Vista on any recent laptop, provided it has decent graphics, but if you want to make the most of the new operating system you'll need specific hardware. The W5Fe is significant because it's the first Vista-specific laptop to break cover, as opposed to a laptop that can run Vista.SideShow uses a secondary screen and a cut-down OS - which we assume is a form of Windows Mobile - so you can check email, look up a phone number or check your schedule without the need to start Vista.

Get Yer' Windows 7 Stuff

Adaptation is something not one of us enjoys doing; changing your 'style' to make something work is something we do every day; it could easily be avoided.

Microsoft has worked extremely hard to make Windows 7 adapt to YOU, and make it work how and when YOU want it to. The last step in the magical transformation of Windows, is the ability to theme without patching system files. When the interface feels right, working and playing becomes much more fun.

"Give your PC a personal touch" says Microsoft:

They now provide free downloads of themes, wallpapers, and certified gadgets all compiled by Microsoft staff.

By clicking on a theme, it will be downloaded and installed, changing familiar things such as the wallpaper, sounds, icons, and the Aero glass color.

The gadgets are split into two categories: the regular windows gadgets, and the emerging Sideshow gadgets. From traffic maps, to a PowerPoint remote control, they've got a decent selection in there. The best part? They're all Microsoft-certified.

Hopefully in time, they will allow further customization of the themes especially, without patching any files. (Maybe this could be some sort of extra in the best edition?)

For now though, we'll have to live with a wide range of colors, matching wallpapers, and gadgets to go with it. It's a step in the right direction; let's hope it takes us somewhere.

'Bear Lake,' New Form Factor PCs Take Stage at Computex

With only a few major chip revisions on the horizon, Taiwan's strengthscost-cutting and, more recently, system designwill be on display, analysts said. They'll also have four new or relatively new industry platforms to play with: the Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC); new Tablet PC revisions; the distinctive design of Apple's iPhone; and SideShow, a secondary-display technology from Microsoft.

Traditionally, Computex has been a chip show. Although companies like Acer have climbed into the upper echelons of the PC industry, the conference is best known for its walls and walls of motherboards and graphics cards, all showing off microprocessors and graphics chips from AMD, ATI, Intel, Nvidia, and VIA.

Within the chip industry, the major announcement expected at Computex is Intel's formal launch of its "Bear Lake" P35 and G33 chipsetsalthough the chipsets have already been announced, and in some cases have even begun shipping. ECS, for example, plans to announce the P35T-A and G33T-M motherboards at the show, according to reports. Rival AMD and its ATI graphics division have taken a far more low-key approach, according to analysts, sparking rumors that the company is having more problems with its manufacturing. ..

Broad Beta of .NET Micro Framework Debuts

Microsoft announced on Tuesday the broad public release of a beta developer kit for the .NET Micro Framework at the Embedded Systems Conference being held in Boston. The .NET Micro Framework provides a managed code development environment for small devices like smart watches that are typically constrained by cost, memory, processor and/or power consumption, according to company statements. Microsoft's intent is to extend the advantages of .NET and Visual Studio to the smallest classes of devices.

The framework currently provides the software platform for all Smart Watches for MSN Direct. Additionally, the company plans to include it in Windows Vista SideShow displays and in an upcoming version of Microsoft TV Foundation Edition, the statements say.

Microsoft and Ford Team Up In-Car Computing

Remember Microsoft's Blue&Me project with Fiat, the one that equipped select models with an in-car computer system with all kinds of connectivity functionality?

Well, we've learned from a source close to Microsoft's car-computer project that Microsoft and Ford are planning to announce the US availability of the system in 2007, no doubt with coinciding announcements at CES and the NAIAS (aka Detroit auto show).

We don't yet have all the details nailed down, but the system (currently dubbed Blue&Me, although we can't confirm that will be the US market name) will have cross-platform smartphone support (i.e. not just Windows Mobile) with Bluetooth, SAP (i.e. SIM Access Profile for contact downloads, voice dialing, etc.), and all the fixins.

No word yet on whether it'll support Sideshow, all the fun TBox stuff like GPS and car diags, or be available for non-Ford and/or aftermarket installs, but we'll all know more come CES.

‘Sensing' more about what's coming in Windows 7

Over the past six months, many individuals have downloaded early, unauthorized Windows 7 test builds that have leaked from Microsoft since late last year (the 6519 series). They’ve been looking for clues — any clues — about some of the new bits that will be part of the next version of Windows client, expected out in late 2009 or so.

But one potential new Windows 7 feature about which I haven’t seen a whole lot of speculation is something called “Windows Sensors.” (See the screen shot from an early Windows 7 build sent to me by a tester who asked not to be identified.) What are these mysterious Windows Sensors mentioned under the “Hardware and Sound” category in the Windows 7 Control Panel — alongside Windows SideShow, Tablet PC settings and game controllers?

Windows Vista Named "Best of CES 2007"

Today, the Windows Vista™ operating system has been selected by the editors at CNET (http://www.cnet.com) as a winner of the "Best of CES 2007" award in the computers and hardware category at the 2007 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Windows Vista, scheduled to be broadly available on Jan. 30, 2007, was honored for enhancements and innovations that provide users with an experience that is easier, safer, more entertaining and better connected, at home or on the go. "It is a great honor to have Windows Vista declared one of the best products at this year's CES," said Mike Sievert, corporate vice president for Windows® Client Marketing at Microsoft Corp. "We are in outstanding company here at the show, and this award is an indication of what customers can expect when they are able to experience Windows Vista for themselves later this month."

The development of Windows Vista is the result of an unprecedented collaboration between Microsoft and its customers and partners. The product was designed with the help of millions of testers worldwide, including 50 families from seven countries taking part in the Wife with Windows Vista program. The feedback gathered from this testing was invaluable to the product development, and Windows Vista is better because of it. In preparation for the Windows Vista launch, thousands of PC manufacturers and system builders across the globe are preparing to deliver new PCs designed to run the new operating system. By Jan. 30, more than 1.5 million devices will have the Works with Windows Vista logo and more than 2,000 products will be Certified for Windows Vista, helping make Internet and networking connections, home entertainment and business tasks faster, easier and more secure. Many of those products are on display at CES, including two Windows Vista-based PCs - the HP TouchSmart PC IQ770 and the ASUS W5Fe SideShow™ Notebook - that were the other two finalists for the Best of CES award in the computers and hardware category.
