Wanted to let you know that today we saw another public posting around a vulnerability in Internet Explorer. This one is different than the crash bug I wrote about earlier. The public posting speaks about createTextRange() and a way that this could be utilized to get code to run when visiting a specially crafted Web page.
We?re still investigating, but we have confirmed this vulnerability and I am writing a Microsoft Security Advisory on this. But we wanted to make sure customers knew we were aware of this and we will address it in a security update.

Microsoft outlines IE7 security plans
Microsoft is tightening up the way its Internet Explorer browser handles HTTPS for version 7, which is used to secure online transactions, in an attempt to give people more protection online.
In a posting on the Microsoft Internet Explorer blog, IE program manager Eric Lawrence said that IE7 would support the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol by default.

Microsoft's security essentials team has confirmed the final version of Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) will be made available in the coming
weeks. MSE is Microsoft's free anti-virus and anti-spyware product that is set to replace Microsoft's paid Windows Live OneCare subscription
service which was withdrawn earlier this year. In an email to beta testers the team thanked testers for their participation and encouraged them to
upgrade to version 1.0.1500.0 of the beta to ensure a "smooth experience". Neowin exclusively revealed Security Essentials in June when it was
codenamed "morro". Morro was renamed Security Essentials and appeared in beta form in late June.

anti-virus product will begin with a beta program next week and an updated beta version over the summer period. Company officials also confirmed that
Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) will be launching in fall this year. We have learned that Microsoft is targeting September or at the latest to
have the anti-virus software available for the October 22 Windows 7 launch. Formerly known as Morro, the software giant plans to replace its Windows
Live OneCare offerings with MSE later in the year.

Finally, after a year-long development phase, Microsoft Security Essentials have been publicly released. If you can't wait to get your hands on
Microsoft's latest security software, you don't need to wait any longer. In June, a public-beta was offered, and the download limit was
reached within 24 hours. It will be absolutely free for all users Windows XP, Vista and 7, both in 32bit and 64bit flavors — as long as you have
genuine copy. Microsoft will not bundle it with Windows 7, though, when it's released on October 22nd, 2009.

Microsoft has confirmed via its Genuine Windows Blog that only those Windows users running genuine, validated copies will be able to download and
install the new Microsoft Security Essentials software. The Director of Microsoft's Genuine Windows team, Alex Kochis, stated in his post that,
"During installation, you'll be asked to validate Windows running on your PC to make sure that it's genuine." Windows validation is by no
means a new technology, and has been implemented in many of Microsoft's software packages with a few notable exceptions: Internet Explorer 8, for
example, and Windows Update which allows users running pirated copies of Windows to download essential security patches without validation.

product via a beta program and will likely extend the cap of 75,000 downloads depending on demand. MSE is Microsoft's free anti-virus and
anti-spyware product that is set to replace Microsoft's paid Windows Live OneCare subscription service which is being withdrawn a week today.
Earlier this month Neowin exclusively revealed MSE (codenamed Morro) and we believe that the final product will be available shortly before the
Windows 7 launch in October. MSE is being distributed on Microsoft's Connect site as a beta program.

WSUS 3.0 SP1 will be available on Windows Update within the next few weeks. The package behavior is:
- Upgrade all previous versions
of WSUS starting with WSUS 2.0 to WSUS 3.0 RTM running on Windows 2003 SP1+
- All upgrades will require user interaction.
-
This service pack package will supersede WSUS 3.0 RTM packages.
- Block upgrades of all WSUS installation using remote SQL. This is now
a manual upgrade process.
- Do not support upgrading previous versions of WSUS running on Windows 2008.
- System Center
Essentials 1.0 RTM will not be upgraded to WSUS 3.0 SP1. This will be handled by a future release of System Center Essentials.
Note:
WSUS 2.0 SP1 and WSUS 2.0 Client SelfUpdate Update for WSUS 2.0 SP1 packages will be expired. These updates are still available on the Download
Center.

Microsoft's new free security software, Windows Security Essentials,
passed a preliminary antivirus exam with flying
colors, said independent and trusted firm
AV-Test, which tested Essentials,
launched yesterday in beta, on Windows XP,
Vista and Windows 7. It put it up against nearly 3,200 common viruses, bot Trojans and worms, said Andreas Marx, one of the firm's managers. The
malware was culled from the most recent WildList, a list of threats actually actively attacking computers. 'All files were properly detected and
treated by the product,' Marx said in an e-mail. 'That's good, as several other
scanners are still not able to detect and kill all of
these critters yet.' It also tested well on false positives.

Microsoft releases Windows Live Essentials build 8064
As we reported a few weeks ago, Microsoft has officially rolled out an update to Windows Live Essentials (Build 8064). If you're not familiar with
Windows Live Essentials, it is a suite of applications that include: Windows Live Mail (Desktop Version), Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Photo
Gallery, Windows Live Writer, Windows Live Toolbar, Windows Live Family Safety, and Windows Live Movie Maker Beta. The updates don't appear to
have any new features, but contain lots of fixed bugs especially for Windows 7 users. Microsoft has announced that users still using Windows Live
Messenger 8.1, 8.5, and the latest 9.0 (build 1202) will be asked, not required, to update to 14.0.8064.0206.

IE 8 RTM expected in the week of March 16, 2009
TechARP reported earlier that Microsoft will finalize its IE 8 RTM schedule on March 5 and the RTM version of IE 8 will be released during the final 2
weeks of March. Now TechARP has reiterated the dates a bit. According to the latest update by TechARP, Microsoft will RTM IE 8 in the week of March
16, 2009. The specific RTM date for the IE 8 will be announced in the week of March 9, 2009. TechARP is not sure whether this announcement would be a
public announcement, or an internal one. IE 8 is currently in RC1 and reached its RTM milestone on the 21st of February.

Microsoft blogger Brandon LeBlanc has provided an official update on the Windows 7 release to manufacturing (RTM). In a blog posting to the Windows
Team blog, LeBlanc admits "there have been many rumors surrounding RTM" over the past week and notes "we are close, but have not yet signed off on
Windows 7. When we RTM you will most certainly hear it here. As we've said all along, we will RTM Windows 7 when it's ready. As previously

Brandon LeBlanc: I recognize this is an important question to have answered. Many of you
have said you want to know exactly when you will be able to get your hands on RTM. Last Monday, I gave an update on RTM to close
out some myths. In that update, I also gave a broad timeline on when different groups of people or audiences would get the final RTM code.
While I have nothing new to add regarding RTM today, I do however have more precise information to give on when you will be able to
get RTM. Again, when you can get RTM depends on who you are.
