Product key, which is a series of 25 characters serial key code string, is used by Windows operating system for several purposes.

28.10.2007Office 2007 Nukes the Insert
Key
Overtype mode, i.e. the way
Microsoft Office apps, in
particular Word, will
overwrite text in front of the
cursor as you type, without so
much as a beep, if you happen
to have pressed your Insert
key, has long been the scourge
of typists the world over, and
for a good long time there's
been real no reason for its
existence at all.
Finally Microsoft seems to
have realized this, as
according to Jan Miksovsky at
flow|state, Office 2007 will
have overtype mode, no matter
how many times you press the
Insert key, disabled by
default.
Of
course, there's still a
preference to re-enable the
"feature" since, as
Miksovsky says, "with a user
base the size of Microsoft's,
it's virtually guaranteed
that a large corporate
customer has a vocal
department that swears they
need Overtype mode, so
dropping the mode was probably
out of the question." Now,
can we get rid of the CAPS
LOCK key, next?

16.07.2006Pirated Vista may be useless, Microsoft says
Microsoft said supposedly
pirated copies of its new
Vista computer operating
system "will be of limited
value" to those who use them.
Microsoft responded Tuesday to
reports that some Web sites
have been circulating pirated
copies of Vista and the Office
2007 applications suite.
The pirated Vista
comes with a product key that
users can enter to activate a
version of the products on
their computers without paying
for them, according to a
report on the Web site of The
Sydney (Australia) Morning
Herald newspaper. A product
key is a unique serial number
tied to each package of a
software product.
A second download, called an
"activation crack," can then
be applied that bypasses the
activation process intended to
guarantee that the Vista OS
being downloaded is
legitimate, the Herald
reported. Pirated copies of
Office 2007 can be downloaded
just with the product key with
no second activation code
required. But Microsoft said
in a prepared statement that
those pirated copies of the OS
won't work for long.

16.11.2006Did NSA Put a Secret Backdoor in New Encryption Standard?
Random numbers are critical for cryptography: for encryption keys, random authentication challenges, initialization vectors, nonces, key-agreement
schemes, generating prime numbers and so on. Break the random-number generator, and most of the time you break the entire security system. Which is
why you should worry about a new random-number standard that includes an algorithm that is slow, badly designed and just might contain a backdoor for
the National Security Agency.
Generating random numbers isn't easy, and researchers have discovered lots of
problems and attacks over the years. A recent
paper found a flaw in the Windows 2000 random-number generator. Another
paper found flaws in the Linux random-number generator. Back in 1996, an early version of SSL was
broken because of flaws in its random-number generator. With John Kelsey and Niels Ferguson in 1999,
I co-authored
Yarrow, a random-number generator based on
our own cryptanalysis work. I improved this design four years later -- and renamed it Fortuna --
in the book
Practical Cryptography, which I co-authored with Ferguson.

10.12.2007Google, Microsoft describe next-gen 'Office 2.0'
As Web 2.0 technologies continue seeping into business systems, a new generation of corporate users is starting to gain access to the collaboration
capabilities they are demanding from IT, according to attendees at the Office 2.0 conference in San Francisco this week. But before use of the tools
spreads too far, they noted, companies must strike a balance between the Web 2.0 wants of users and the needs of corporate IT.
The conference, described as a collective experiment by its long list of sponsors, was organized in two months using the online productivity and
collaboration tools that are the focus of the event, organizers said.
Jonathan Rochelle, product manager of Google's spreadsheet
product, predicted that real-time collaboration capabilities, as provided in the Google Docs & Spreadsheets tool set, will become a key part of the
next generation of office tools. Employees are increasingly demanding tools that will let them collaborate online when creating documents, he noted. ..

07.09.2007Office 14 to be named Microsoft Office System 2009?
Microsoft is currently developing the successor to Office 2007, Office codenamed "14". There has been little to no information on the upcoming
Office version and many have speculated we might not see the product until 2010. Microsoft failed to provide any solid information at last years PDC,
choosing to focus on its Office Live offerings. Eagled eyed Microsoft enthusiast and blogger Stephen Chapman has spotted what appears to be an
internal software roadmap from Microsoft. The roadmap reveals a milestone of year end 2009 but the dates aren't very clear: In the roadmap you
can see that Office 14 is clearly identified as Microsoft Office System 2009.

02.05.2008Office 2007 Is Running Late,
Too
Just like Windows Vista,
Office 2007 is now
officially a 2007
product . Sure,
Microsoft is still going to
release to manufacturing (RTM)
the Office 2007 bits in
calendar 2006 (although a bit
later than it expected). But
only volume licensees will
actually be able to get the
Office 2007 bits in 2006;
everyone else will have to

Sounds like Microsoft is now

Microsoft appointed Office
chief Steven Sinofsky to move
to Windows to get the trains

02.08.2007Microsoft Endorses Product That Turns Off Vista UAC Nags
The latest version of a well-reviewed third-party security policy enhancement system for Windows Vista claims to solve what its manufacturer
characterizes as "not a secure solution" to a critical problem Windows historically had with administrator privileges on programs. But in the
announcement of the upgrade earlier this week, a key Microsoft product manager is quoted as having acknowledged Vista's own take on the solution was
not quite enough, effectively reversing his company's stand on User Account Control.
The product is BeyondTrust Privilege
Manager 3.5, and its key new feature is the ability to run Vista's UAC transparently without prompting the user for privilege elevation. In Monday's
press release, Microsoft director of client security product management Austin Wilson is quoted as not only endorsing the product, but appearing to
agree with BeyondTrust's key contention: that the UAC prompts were not only a nag but an insecure solution in itself.

21.09.2005Debian and Ubuntu flaw leaves private SSL/SSH keys guessable
The Debian Security Advisory posted up
DSA-1571-1 openssl -- predictable
random number generator issue today and strongly advised its users to take steps to avoid possible compromising of any systems running on Debian,
such as Ubuntu.
The researcher Luciano Bello discovered a security flaw in Debian's random number generator that allows to predict a
random generated number. This is caused by an incorrect Debian change to the openssl package. As a result, cryptographic key material may be
guessable.
This problem not only affects Debian, but also all its derivatives, such as Ubuntu.
It is strongly recommended that
all cryptographic key material which has been generated by OpenSSL versions starting with 0.9.8c-1 on affected systems is recreated from scratch.
Furthermore, all DSA keys ever used on affected systems for signing or authentication purposes should be considered compromised.
