Office 2007 Nukes the Insert Key

Overtype mode, i.e. the way Microsoft Office apps, in particular Word, will overwrite text in front of the cursor as you type, without so much as a beep, if you happen to have pressed your Insert key, has long been the scourge of typists the world over, and for a good long time there's been real no reason for its existence at all.

Finally Microsoft seems to have realized this, as according to Jan Miksovsky at flow|state, Office 2007 will have overtype mode, no matter how many times you press the Insert key, disabled by default.

Of course, there's still a preference to re-enable the "feature" since, as Miksovsky says, "with a user base the size of Microsoft's, it's virtually guaranteed that a large corporate customer has a vocal department that swears they need Overtype mode, so dropping the mode was probably out of the question." Now, can we get rid of the CAPS LOCK key, next?

Office 2007 Is Running Late, Too

Just like Windows Vista, Office 2007 is now officially a 2007 product . Sure, Microsoft is still going to release to manufacturing (RTM) the Office 2007 bits in calendar 2006 (although a bit later than it expected). But only volume licensees will actually be able to get the Office 2007 bits in 2006; everyone else will have to wait until January 2007. Sounds like Microsoft is now planning a double-header product launch to start the new year. The news of Office 2007 new rollout schedule comes the same day that Microsoft appointed Office chief Steven Sinofsky to move to Windows to get the trains running on time.

Suite smell of success: Office 2007 a retail hit, NPD says

Microsoft Corp. may be having trouble selling Windows Vista in retail, but its Office line is going like gangbusters, according to market research firm The NPD Group Inc. Part of the reason: people who switch from PCs to Macs.

Office 2007 on Windows is selling at roughly double the rate its predecessor, Office 2003, did in its first months after release, NPD analyst Chris Swenson said today. "Any way you cut it, the first six months, or a similar January-through-July period, or the first week or even the first month , no matter how you slice it, Office 2007 is selling much better than Office 2003 did," he said.

And even though Office 2004 for Mac is far from new, Swenson said, it's also contributing to Microsoft's suite success. "Mac Office represents about 20% of all Office sales in U.S. retail. At first, that seemed really surprising, but if I'm switching to Mac, there are a few key products I'm going to buy, and Office is one of them."

In other words, even though they're leaving the PC behind and abandoning Windows, newly-minted Mac owners are still shoveling money at Microsoft, Swenson said. "Microsoft's still making the Office sale," he said.

Microsoft Office Visio 2007 Positioned in the Leaders Quadrant

Gartner Inc. has positioned Microsoft Corp., a leading provider of business process management (BPM) software, in the Leaders quadrant in its 2007 Magic Quadrant for Business Process Analysis (BPA) Tools, 2H07-1H08 report.1 The report evaluates services and products that include Microsoft® Office Visio® 2007.

The Gartner Magic Quadrant for BPA Tools examines how business process analysis tools continue to grow in importance as business managers, process architects and process analysts seek to better capture, understand, streamline and automate their business processes. Gartner also underscored that BPA is increasingly used for compliance and process improvement initiatives. For business process (BP) improvement, BPA is the key link between business activity monitoring and workflow assembly and business orchestration.

As businesses look more and more to process improvements as a core driver of growth and profitability, they made it clear that they want an easier way to analyze their processes, many of which are already captured in Office Visio 2007 diagrams, said Richard Wolf, general manager of the Office Graphics Division at Microsoft. This led us to focus Office Visio 2007 on integrating and displaying process, system and activity data directly in Office Visio 2007 diagrams for easier exploration and understanding...

Office 2007 Hold-Up Likely to Affect Vista

Citing "performance issues", Microsoft said last week that it will not release Office 2007 to enterprises until "the end of 2006". The consumer launch will take place some time in "early 2007".

But David Bradshaw, an analyst with Ovum, said: "It seems sensible to keep Office 2007 in step with Vista, and Vista is already delayed, so this is not entirely surprising to us.

"There is wide speculation that Vista will be delayed again, and this would be an embarrassment for Microsoft.

"Vista is a much more ambitious project than Office 2007, and has already seen several delays. Microsoft may face the same decision again: whether to postpone Office 2007 or launch it without Vista."

The analyst suggested that delaying Office 2007 will have a minimal impact on Microsoft's product revenues as most customers will buy Office only when they need it, for example when they upgrade to new computers.

The rescheduling marks the second delay to Office 2007 this year. Microsoft said in March that it would hold back the release to coincide with the launch of Windows Vista.
