Microsoft MyPhone service coming to invite-only beta soon, website launched
Today, the new Microsoft service, "My Phone" launched it's official
website.
On My Phone's website, it gives us some information about what My Phone is really about. This service basically can backup
and restore your Windows Mobile phone to a secure website. That's not all it does though; it also can gives you a web account that lets you view and
modify calendar appointments along with contacts. Sharing photos is made easier using the online account too, by letting you take saved pictures from
your phone and downloading them to your computer and/or emailing them to your friends and family.
This service is free, and will work
with any Windows Mobile 6+ operating system. Microsoft gives you 200 MB of data in your account to use towards phone synchronizations.
Another feature of this application lets you restore all of your data to a new phone, should your old phone get lost or stolen. Simply use the same
Windows Live ID to sign in with the application, and all of your data will restore once you hit the sync button.
This has not been
released yet, and is expected to be released to select beta testers in an invite-only beta test at the Mobile World Congress.

Rumor: Microsoft & Verizon in talks to launch "Pink" mobile
We've known for quite some time now that the folks up in Redmond were working on a top-secret Windows Mobile 7 powered device, dubbed codename:
Pink. Our friend Mary Jo Foley has had an obsession for codename Pink for the last few years. Today the Wall Street Journal reported that Microsoft
and Verizon are currently in talks in launching a "touch-screen multimedia cellphone on the carrier's network early next year." Microsoft's
CEO Steve Ballmer has already confirmed that Microsoft will not be producing the physical hardware for codename Pink, but the company will have the
phone branded with the Microsoft logo. The focus on codename Pink will be Zune services, Windows Mobile Marketplace, MyPhone Services, and Windows
Mobile 7.

Windows 7 beta download imminent?
Microsoft have updated their Windows 7 site with a download link for the Windows 7 beta. It would appear from the posting that Microsoft is currently
readying site updates and download servers for the imminent release of the Windows 7 beta. Yesterday, German site Winfuture claimed that the beta
would be released today and this could confirm the sites claims. The download link is currently inaccessible. It's entirely possible that once
the page is live it will simply be a sign up page to register your interest. Microsoft will not comment on the exact date and a Microsoft official
confirmed the beta is still targetted for early 2009.

What Silverlight can do for the Microsoft Download Center
If you’ve visited the Microsoft Download Center in the last month or so, you’ve probably been prompted with a pop-up asking you to try the
Silverlight version of the site. Currently in beta, the new version of the MDC is meant to improve the user experience. Even if Silverlight has hit
version 1.0, there is still no Linux, no Opera and no x64 support, which definitely hinders on who can visit the site. It is currently unclear whether
Microsoft will completely replace the current site with the Silverlight version, but if that were to happen, it definitely would not be soon.
Here’s a detailed article about what Qixing Zheng, from Microsoft Canada, believes Silverlight can do for the Microsoft Download Center.

Microsoft MWC Press Conference Summary
Microsoft has just finished up with their press conference at the Mobile World Congress 2009 in Barcelona, and they had plenty to share with us.
Here is a quick summary of what Microsoft announced today...
- Windows Mobile 6.5: Microsoft unveiled the next version of
Windows Mobile, Microsoft's mobile OS for smartphones. 6.5 features a heavily refined user interface over it's predecessor, and focuses heavily on
on being touch friendly, ridding the UI of those tiny buttons which used to require a stylus in order to interact with. During the Q&A session,
Microsoft was asked if we would still see three versions, Classic, Standard and Professional, of Windows Mobile 6.5. Unfortunately, Microsoft did not
provide a clear answer to this question and it is still uncertain how many versions of the OS there will be. We will have more on Windows Mobile 6.5
in a short while.
- My Phone: Microsoft also finally took the wraps off of their awaited My Phone service. My Phone will offer
Windows Mobile users the ability to sync all of the information on their phones to their online My Phone account. This includes text messages, emails,
contacts, photos, videos, music, documents and appointments. This information can be synced back and forth between the web interface and your Windows
Mobile phone. My Phone will be available for both Windows Mobile 6.1 and 6.5. If you are interested in trying the My Phone service, Microsoft is now
accepting registrations for the waiting list right over here. More on My Phone in a bit.
- Marketplace: Along with the My Phone service, Microsoft also unveiled the new Windows Mobile Marketplace. The Marketplace will only be
available for Windows Mobile 6.5 phones (officially, that is *ahem*) and will offer more than 20,000 applications for download. There is no
word yet on how the Marketplace will function or if applications can be submitted by the general public.
- Windows Phones: Ballmer and
Lees also announced that Microsoft would be taking a new marketing approach to Windows Mobile. Windows Mobile powered phones will now simply be
referred to as "Windows Phones" (so much for those hopes of an actual Microsoft phone). All Windows Phones from here on will also have to
meet some specific requirements, which include the requirement of a physical Windows key to act as the "Start" button, as well physical Call and End
keys. During the conference, CEO of HTC came on stage and announced the new HTC Touch Diamond2 and Touch Pro2, both of which are Windows Mobile 6.5
capable and will receive free upgrades to WinMo 6.5 upon release. CEO of LG Electronics also came on stage and announced that from now until 2012, LG
will be unveiling more than 50 new Windows Phones.
During the ending Q&A session, Ballmer also made it clear that Windows Mobile 7 is on
the horizon, but that it is not linked to the Windows 7 timeline in any way.
More on these individual subjects in a short while. An
On-Demand archive of today's press conference will be available shortly.
