And speaking of Google, it's sounding like Microsoft's nemesis bested Microsoft in the contest for whose search engine would power Google search, going forward. Microsoft announced today that it has made some important changes to its Windows Marketplace for Mobile. Marketplace for Mobile is Microsoft's Windows Mobile equivalent of the popular Apple iPhone App Store. Marketplace was introduced alongside the new Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system on October 6, 2009. Currently the Marketplace does not support Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1 but Microsoft has confirmed it will extend the service to these devices "later this month". Microsoft has introduced a wireless sync between the PC and Windows Mobile. Windows Mobile 6.5 owners can now browse, buy and download applications online at the Windows Marketplace for Mobile site.

Microsoft will be rolling out Windows Mobile 6.1 AKU 1.4 bundled with IE Mobile 6 for all the new Windows Phones until Windows Mobile 6.5 is released. Glad that Microsoft is upgrading their mobile browser and not delaying it further. Microsoft had decided earlier that IE Mobile 6 will not be made available as an upgrade or download for existing Windows Phones saying that the current hardware cannot support IE 6. "Regarding making IE Mobile available as a separate download or update, the rich media experiences that IE Mobile 6 enables require more powerful, advanced devices.

T-Mobile announced Tuesday that it will soon begin using Yahoo as its preferred mobile search provider in Europe, ending the operator's existing relationship with Google for mobile search.

The move was seen by many as a minor coup for Yahoo, which is competing with Google and Microsoft to win the loyalty of a growing number of mobile Internet users. Others noted that mobile search is in its infancy and said the field is still wide-open.

When T-Mobile signed its original deal with Google, it made headlines as one of the earliest partnerships between a mobile operator and a search provider.

Bang On: I love Windows Mobile

It's still pretty cool to hate Microsoft's Windows Mobile operating system. With the iPhone and Android getting so much attention and feeling so new, the aging mobile OS from Redmond can tend to feel dated and unintuitive. Sometimes it's enough to make you question what you did so wrong to be deserving of such frustration. Here's the catch, though: I love Windows Mobile. Windows Mobile is just like most other software products that Microsoft produces. The out of box experience is anything less than extraordinary. If the iPhone "just works", then a standard Windows Mobile installation just makes you want to put your head through a wall.
