Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 Review

A Little History
Virtualization software is nothing new, and dates back quite some time. One of the most popular examples for the end user was Connectix Virtual PC for the Mac. Since there are a pretty huge number of programs that are only available on Windows, this created a strong market niche to let Mac users run Windows programs, even if at reduced speed.

Virtual PC for the Mac, rather than emulating Windows, emulated the x86 architecture and the requisite peripheral devices, such as a video and sound card. This meant that emulation could work quite flawlessly, but also that any user would need to purchase a copy of Windows as well and then install it onto the Virtual PC. Virtual PC was a success and Connectix later created a Windows version which let you run most x86 OSes ? something quite useful for developers, enthusiasts, and IT professionals.

During the Beta phase of Office 2003, Code-named ?Office 11? and referred to as NGO (Next Generation of Office), brought new applications to the table. These applications were InfoPath and OneNote.

Live Search 2.0 discussions continue

At the company meeting last week, the new Live Search 2.0 was demoed and has since received rave reviews from Microsoft employees (yes even mini). Sean Earp's impresions were picked up by Scoble, with relevance still seeming to be the favourite buzzword of the Live Search team. Sean also mentions improvements around index size and instant answers but refrains from mentioning any of the juicy new bits. Of course Mary-Jo Foley has her ear to the ground, with some of the new directions the team is rumoured to be going in including:While these sound pretty useful, its worth remembering that some of them may just be at the ideas stage and not available immediately at launch - the last point is rumoured to be an Office 14 feature, Calendar integration requires a Windows Live Calendar etc.

So with the Live Search team not talking about new features and long term aims until Searchification on Sept 26th, and Microsoft employees left right and center adding to the hype daily, we thought we'd provide a quick look at how the beta UI has changed from the existing Live Search (not looking at new features).

1up Pulls Neverwinter Nights 2 Review

Seems the overly negative review of Neverwinter Nights 2 over at 1up didn't sit to well with the members. But that begs the question, why pull a review because it was negative? 1up says it was because the review didn't live up to their "editorial standards" which can be taken many ways. Was it because everyone thought the review was way, way to negative? Or was it because 1up got hate mail due to the negative review? Who knows. All I know is that 1up actually pulled a review - which I don't think I've ever seen happen before with an online review from a major gaming site. The original review gave Neverwinter Nights 2 a 5/10 score, and it was pretty obvious the reviewer didn't care for the D&D rules or world. Plus, as has been said, it was poorly written. Or was it?

Did 1up do the right thing by pulling the review? Should the review have not been pulled? What does that say about a negative reaction to a review in general, if it is so negative it might get pulled by the company? What do you guys think?

You can read the original review here on the Bioware forums.

Windows Live Folders beta - more info

The folks over at LiveSide have put up and detailed walkthrough of Microsoft's latest Live product, Windows Live Folders.

Here's a snip:

Windows Live Folders is (sic) not a difficult to use service, folder creation is straightforward, as it the uploading of files. Microsoft is aiming Windows Live Folders towards a large as market as possible, so the basic procedures need to be simple to promote adoption amongst the less tech-savy. The use of ajax to create new folders is nice, though the rest of the site could do with a little too. As we've seen with Windows Live Hotmail though, too much of a good thing can be bad.

Microsoft patents holographic meetings

Networkworld has discovered a rather interesting patent, applied for by Redmond company Microsoft, that would allow them to produce a holographic meeting place, as well as a few other intriguing ideas. The holographic meetings, or 'Virtual Office Devices' are just what you would imagine; a user would see holograms of other meeting attendees, whilst projecting their own for the others to view. Unfortunately, there is no proper specifics on the hardware or software behind this, but there is a range of pictures included to show how this would be achieved. One of the people credited with this invention is Patrice Simard, who is the chief scientist and manager of Windows Live Labs.
