Microsoft Live Labs releases Volta Web toolkit

Microsoft's Live Labs, a standalone product research group, released on Wednesday Volta, a development tool designed to make it easier to partition an application's component pieces across a network.

The problem that Microsoft researchers are trying to address is the difficulty of deciding which part of the application runs under which tier--either the client or server.

Typically, developers need to write code to handle the communication between those tiers. And they need to decide during development on how to best architect their applications for optimal performance.

Microsoft Live Labs Listas Tech Preview

Microsoft Live Labs has unveiled Listas, a tool for the creation, management and sharing of lists, notes, favourites, and similar services. It allows adding, editing and sharing lists with others for reading or wiki-style editing, as well as the discovery of the public lists of other users. The Listas Community Section gives members (Live ID required) a number of highlights of the most popular and random items from around the community of public lists such as the most used tags, the hottest lists, and prolific contributors. Adding other people’s lists (or any RSS feed) to your own Listas is also possible. With the Listas Toolbar for Internet Explorer, it is possible to create lists from anything found on a web page: search results, wish lists, videos and so on.

First look: Listas by Microsoft Live Labs

Larry Larsen: Raj Jain stops by from Live Labs to show me their latest technical preview. Listas is a list management system. It's a way for you to create lists of anything you like and store them on a central place. You can invite others to participate in your lists, and you can publish them to the web or an RSS feed.

You could keep a real time grocery list online, invite family members to add to it, and subscribe to it on your phone. You could use it as a to-do list and feed it into your Sidebar using a PopFly RSS block.

Listas also has some nice template features to make it easy to build lists from search results and web sites you browse. It's in the process of going online now, so go give it a try.

Windows Live PhotoZoom Alpha: Silverlight powers new Microsoft Live Labs project

There's a new project brewing in Microsoft Live Labs, Windows Live PhotoZoom. This alpha project from Ray Ozzie's Concept Development Team is Silverlight based and allows seamless zoom controls on consumer photos in a web based application. PhotoZoom also makes use of the Photosynth / Seadragon technology developed by Live Labs, which most recently has been seen in the http://www.on10.net/Blogs/larr y/bbc-launches-six-photosynth- collections/>Photosynth collections released by the BBC. While you may not yet be able to recreate the BBC's work, PhotoZoom is another step towards this.

According to Matt Augustine of the PhotoZoom team, "PhotoZoom is an experimental site that brings the zooming capabilities first shown during the Silverlight demos in the Mix07 keynote to consumer photography." Note that the currently available alpha/beta builds of Silverlight do not feature the zooming feature that is required for PhotoZoom, so the timeline for this Live Labs project being released is dependent on when this Silverlight update becomes public...
