Microsoft is 30 years old today! have a look at the Microsoft Timeline

It's hard to believe that Microsoft is already 30 years old. The company that made Redmond, Washington, a household name was actually founded in 1975 in another city by two young Seattle men, one of whom was a college dropout. From this inauspicious beginning came an equally improbable vision: A personal computer on every desk and in every home. Thirty years later, it seems so obvious. But at the time, when only a handful of people knew what a personal computer was, it was a great leap of faith and daring.

$10,000 Says Windows Vista Won't Ship on Time

Earlier this week Bill Gates said there was an 80 percent chance Windows Vista would ship in January 2007 as scheduled.

At the time I said "I wouldn't make any bets with odds like that," and neither would Mac developer Wil Shipley--he wants to bet Bill $10,000 that Vista won't ship by next January, and he's giving the Microsoft chairman 3 to 1 odds (which, for the math-challenged, is better than Bill's 80%, or 4:1).

Of course, Gates will never take him or anyone else (except maybe Ballmer or Allchin) up on that bet, but it would be nice to see him put his money, as Shipley says, where his mouth is.

OLPC project clarifies: no plans for Windows support

Claims that the One Laptop Per Child project and Microsoft had partnered to put Windows XP Starter Edition on the laptop have turned out to be false. According to Walter Bender, president of Software and Content at OLPC, there is no agreement in place between OLPC and Microsoft to offer XO laptops with any version of Windows. Bender also indicated that Microsoft has not contacted OLPC regarding its $3 software bundling program, nor have any governments requested that the XO be outfitted with Windows.

Microsoft may be one of over 1,500 developers accepted to OLPC's developer program, the company does have access to XO prototypes and has said that it will develop for the XO laptop. However, when asked if OLPC was aware of any tests of either XP Starter Edition or Vista Starter Edition on the XO, Bender said that he was not.

What will Windows 7 look like?

By now, everyone has heard how Microsoft plans to release the next Windows client OS, Windows 7, in 2010. But what the company is not making clear is what new features the OS will have, a topic that has become fodder for educated Windows 7 speculation. Analysts said Microsoft probably is keeping tight-lipped about what Windows 7 will look like because at this point, company engineers and executives don't even know.

"They don't want to commit because they don't have a good idea what's in it," said Michael Silver, an analyst with Gartner. "We're three years out, so you can't really expect that much detail." Michael Cherry, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft, said that with so many people still in the midst of upgrading to the latest client OS, Windows Vista, he's hesitant to speculate on what might be in the next OS. "We barely know the features of the one we just got," he said with a laugh.

Windows Home Server, RC Next week?

Two bits of information on Windows Home Server were releaced at TechEd 2007 "Day 3".

First there are only going to be two ways for people to get the SKU. First is from an OEM like HP the other method will be from System Builders. If you were hoping for picking this up at your local big box off the shelf, like me, we are out of luck. there might be one exception to this and that could be the current beta test population. He was hopeful that they would be able to provide RTM to the existing beta testers, but as with all things there is no guarantee.

The second bit of really useful information was that we might see an RC version of Home server as early as next week. If you have been holing out rebuilding your home server on RC, like me, then with any luck next week is what you have been waiting for.

Comparing executable files in Windows Server 2008 in Full and Core installs

Windows Server 2008 Server Core installation is a minimal install of the upcoming Windows Server OS that can run specific roles (like DNS, Active Directory or File Server) with a much smaller footprint and attack surface.

In a previous blog post I looked into overall image sizes for both and also discussed some of the details about the differences between these Full and the Core installs.

Now I am taking it one step further to look into the executable files in both installs. I will be presenting about this next Thursday and wanted to have a better feel for whats really the difference between the two. My findings are presented below, first with some overall counts and then looking at files by group (only in Core, in both, only in full).

Windows Mobile 6 - More Information

Windows Mobile 6 has been officially announced, released and of course covered before on Neowin's front page. Regardless of this "small detail", I'd like to finish off with a third posting that wraps everything up with a bunch of quotes and links. So, without further ado, here we go: Scores of additional mobile operators and device makers from around the globe, including Cingular Wireless, now the new AT&T, Chunghwa Telecom, Dopod International Corp., HP, LG Electronics, Motorola Inc., Palm Inc., Samsung, Sprint, Telefnica, Toshiba, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone, plan to ship Windows Mobile 6-based devices this year. Many of these partners are expanding large existing portfolios of Windows Mobile powered smartphones.

According to Lokeui, all beta testers should take note that the Windows Mobile 6 RTM build has undergone many speed tweaks: " From switching windows, going through long lists like contacts and mail, navigating web pages, going back and forth etc. At least 20-30% faster IMHO ." Lokeui also wanted to clarify the name for the latest version of Microsoft's Mobile OS. It's either Windows Mobile 6 or WM6 (incidentally, "Windows Embedded CE 6.0" is the official name for the latest version of Windows CE), not:

“Certified for Windows Vista” Software Logo Requirements

Critical to the success of User Account Control is having software that works well for standard users and administrators, without excess prompts. Since User Account Control is such a central part of Windows Vista, User Account Control compatibility is one of the key requirements to display the Certified for Windows Vista Logo on software.

v 1.1 of the Certifie d for Windows Vista Software Logo Technical Requirements is available now. Our goal in sharing this information on our blog is to make sure that any ISV’s reading this are aware of the requirements so that they have ample time to make their product compliant and to give our customers confidence that there will be a great supply of software that works well for standard users and UAC.

Some of the key requirements that relate to User Account Control and running as a standard user:

· Make sure the application works well for standard users, unless it is something truly designed to be run only by system administrators such as disk partitioning software. If the program has admin and non-admin components the main application should still be run as a standard user and administrative features should be moved to a separate executable.

· Every .exe file included with an application must have an embedded manifest that defines its execution level. Such as:

<requestedExe cutionLevel level="asInvoker|highestAvail able|requireAdministrator" uiAccess="true|false"/&g t;

Note, including the manifest file will disable File and Registry Virtualization for the application. So the application has to work well for a standard user without relying on virtualization.

· Executable files with .EXE, .DLL, .SYS, .DRV, .OCX, .CPL, or .SCR extensions must be signed with an Authenticode certificate.

· Installers must not assume that the person who starts the installation is the one who finishes the installation. For example if your program allows per user and all user installations, a standard user should be able to start the install, but it should prompt for admin credentials if the user chooses the all users option.

· If the installer uses a boostrapper/chainer, it must include an embedded manifest that designates the desired execution level for the installer.

Another big change in the Certified for Windows Vista logo requirements is that applications must be independently tested by a Microsoft approved testing vendor before they are granted logo certification. A draft of the test cases that will be used to verify compliance are posted here.

We’ve also provided a number of resources to help developers make their software Windows Vista and User Account Control compatible, including:

· Develo per Best Practices and Guidelines for Applications in a Least Privileged Environment

· Microsoft Standard User Analyzer

· Windows Vista Jumpstart Toolkit< /SPAN>

Learn more about the Certified for Windows Vista Software Quality Logo program including how to enroll your company’s software at http://www.isvinnovationporta l.com/windowsvista.

When develo pers release software that meets the Certified for Windows Vista requirements, users will experience even fewer User Account Control prompts than they are seeing on beta versions today. And the Windows Vista team will continue to minimize the number of OS-generated prompts and help make as many legacy programs as possible work without prompting to ensure a good User Account Control experience in the final release.
