Microsoft is 30 years old today! have a look at the Microsoft Timeline
It's hard to believe that Microsoft is already 30 years old. The company that made Redmond, Washington, a household name was actually founded in 1975 in another city by two young Seattle men, one of whom was a college dropout. From this inauspicious beginning came an equally improbable vision: A personal computer on every desk and in every home. Thirty years later, it seems so obvious. But at the time, when only a handful of people knew what a personal computer was, it was a great leap of faith and daring.

25.07.2009India Looks To Produce World's First $10 Laptop
Forget the one hundred dollar
laptop. India has bigger, but
cheaper, plans. Ten times
cheaper to be exact: India's
Ministry of Human Resource
Development is spearheading
the project, with help from
Semiconductor Complex, a
state-sponsored designer and
manufacturer of integrated
circuits. Officials from those
organizations are presently
weighing system designs
submitted by an engineering
student from India's Vellore
Institute of Technology and a
researcher from the Indian
Institute of Science in
Bangalore. The Times of India
on Friday reported that the
efforts thus far have yielded
designs for a laptop that
would cost about $47,
while a $10 system remains
the ultimate goal.
Last year, Negroponte's One
Laptop Per Child Organization
submitted a proposal to the
Indian government under which
the group would have worked to
produce laptops for Indian
students starting at $100.
Indian officials at the time
criticized the proposal as
insufficiently mature to be
taken seriously and rejected
it.

07.08.2009India Developing US$10 Laptop
India is developing a laptop to be sold at US$10, that will target higher education applications, a minister of the federal government said
Tuesday in Delhi. Research on the new low-cost laptop is being carried out at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore and the Indian Institute of
Technology in Chennai, said D. Purandeswari, Minister of State for Higher Education, at a conference in Delhi. This measure will help raise the
quality of higher education in India, she added.
The Minister did not however give the specifications of the $10 laptop, nor is it
clear if the rock-bottom price will be achieved with the help of a government subsidy. The Indian government is planning to use information and
communications technology (ICT) to strengthen its current programs for distance learning by making them accessible online, Purandeswari said.

16.04.2008Open XML stumbles in India
A technical committee in India unanimously rejected Microsoft's Office Open XML file format as a standard, ahead of a vote on Sept. 2 by the ISO on
whether to approve Open XML as an international standard.
However, the rejection may be temporary should Microsoft meet some of
the objections to Open XML raised by committee members.
The technical committee was set up by the Bureau of Indian Standards
(BIS), India's national standards body, which is a founder member of International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and represents India at
the international standards organization.
"There were a large number of technical objections raised about Open XML, and many of
which Microsoft was not able to address at this point," said D.B. Phatak, professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai. One of the
objections was that Open XML was not fully compatible with OpenDocument Format (ODF), a rival existing ISO standard, he added. IIT Mumbai is a member
of the technical committee...
