Microsoft to release IE8 RC1 next week

Microsoft is currently readying the release of Internet Explorer 8 RC1 for early next week, company sources indicate. In a blog posting by Microsoft's Frank Olivier, the UX and Compatibility program manager confirms "we're about to release" IE8 RC1. Insiders indicate it might be worth penning Monday 26th January in your calendar as the date for IE8 RC1. IE8 RC1 will not install on the current Windows 7 beta build (7000) and it's rumored that Microsoft could be readying some new beta bits for connect testers in the coming weeks. The RC1 build will initially be offered to Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems.

Microsoft continues to warn of IE8 lock-in for XP SP3 users

Last year when Microsoft launched Internet Explorer 8 Beta 2, Jane Maliouta announced that consumers using Windows XP SP3 would be locked-in with the IE8 if they had installed the IE8 beta prior to upgrading to SP3. Microsoft again yesterday issued that same warning to it's consumers. If you are still one of the millions of users on Windows XP with SP3 installed, Microsoft has provided crucial steps to follow if you're ready to upgrade to IE8 RC1. You can obtain IE8 RC1 from the links on this page. To see if you're one of the people who will have IE8 locked in, follow these steps. Is your computer running Windows XP SP3?

IE8 RTM expected in March

TechARP has predicted that Microsoft will reach IE8's RTM milestone in March during the last 2 weeks. TechARP expects so because Microsoft plans to announce the final details of the IE8 RTM schedule and available language versions by March 5, 2009. The malaysian website also expects Microsoft to determine a time frame for the public release of IE8 via Windows Update by March 8. There was a time gap of 8 weeks between IE7's RC1 and its public release. A similar 8-weeks time limit applied to IE8's RC1 in January suggests the final build's availability around March 23 according to TechARP.

IE8 via Automatic Update for users running IE6 or IE7

Microsoft plans to distribute Internet Explorer 8 to computers running previous versions of IE (IE 6 or IE 7) via Automatic Updates starting from the 3rd week of April. The update will be rolled out gradually from a small user base to large number of users. The update will be a 'high priority' update for systems running Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 and is an 'important' update for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. The final version of IE8 was distributed via automatic update recently to users still running pre-release versions of IE8, Beta 2/RC1. Organizations can use the IE8 Blocker Toolkit to block automatic delivery of IE8.

Microsoft Releases IE8 RC1

Earlier today, Microsoft released their near feature-complete "RC1" version of Internet Explorer 8.

Available in 25 different languages for Windows Vista, XP, and Windows Server 2003/2008, it's available for download right now.

According to Microsoft's IE8 team, the browser is "effectively complete and done." Most of the kinks visible in previous betas have been ironed out; their intent with this beta is to gather feedback about critical issues that seriously impede functionality.

Security issues such as the recent "Clickjacking" one have been solved. Sites can protect themselves "out of the box".

They've targeted both technology enthusiasts and the hundreds of millions of "real users" who use Internet Explorer. From the feedback, they really feel that IE8 is ready to go. That however, is for the users to decide, and that includes you.

To begin testing of this RC release, a few prerequisites are required:

Firstly, if you are one of the many people testing any of the Windows 7 Betas, the version available for download will NOT work. It will be available as an update at a later date. If you don't fall under this category, then the following prerequisites may be applicable to your install of Windows:

Support for IE8 pre-released versions extended

The IE8 beta 2 support page has been updated again and the support for IE8 pre-released versions has now been bumped to until March 31st, 2009. This could indicate that the final product may be released during April. Dean Hachamovitch, General Manager, Internet Explorer had officially announced earlier that there will be one more public update of IE8 in the first quarter of 2009, followed up by the final release. Currently, the IE8 Beta testers can download the latest partner build and the rest can download the Beta 2 which is available to public. The current IE build version the beta testers can download is 8.0.6001.18344 and the one available in the leaked Windows 7 Beta 1 is 8.0.7000.0.

Internet Explorer 8 RTM in March?

After having released Beta 1 in August or 2008, Beta 2 in March of the same year, and RC1 just last month, are they ready to ship the RTM version?

TechARP thinks so. They claim that "Microsoft is ready to release Internet Explorer 8 to manufacturing (RTM) in the next few weeks." Microsoft previously mentioned that the RC1 build would be the last testing build before RTM. That day has come and gone, so it only seems sensible that the RTM will follow shortly after.

With quotes such as "IE8 is clearly nearly ready for release. RC1 is stable and fast, and it contains a full feature set," and "Microsoft has come a long way with IE8 by pushing performance barriers, embracing Web standards, and adding a few new features," being posted on the Windows Team Blog, it seems that people are finally impressed.

How about you?

Among the list of improvements over IE7 are:
- Extensive improvements in the areas of performance and reliability.
- Monetization opportunities (for OEMs).
- Visual Search Suggestions, which offers the ability to configure a search provider and additional services into the IE8 search box to search for shopping, news/portal sites, social networks, sports, etc.
- Web Slices and Accelerators, which are additional web services within the IE8 monetization ecosystem, built specifically for IE8 by content providers. These services will be used by OEMs to deliver brand exposure and content updates to the users.
- Enhanced user experience, greater user privacy, and security enhancements...

Windows Vista RC1 Download Page Discovered

Only hours after Microsoft released Windows Vista build 5536 to the public, their RC1 download page has been discovered. The RC1 build, which was, according to Paul Thurrott, finalized yesterday, is most likely not there yet, and since the download ISO is approximately 3.12 GB, it appears to be the Beta 2 version.

The page is about the same as the pre-RC1 download page but removes the references to the 100000 copies limit, and, of course, replaces the pre-RC1 terms for RC1.

Microsoft is expected to make Windows Vista's first Release Candidate available broadly in early september, and is already preparing it, just after releasing its preview build.

Thanks to Nem for the heads up!

Vista build 5536 for RC1?

Paul Thurrott:....inside the software colossus, work continues toward an early September RC1 release for Vista.

Downloading IE8 will help feed hungry Americans

Microsoft has announced that for every completed download of Internet Explorer 8, they will donate the financial equivalent of eight meals to the Feeding America network. The campaign is called "Browser for the Better," and runs from June 10 and August 8. Only IE8 downloads from the specific "Browser for the Better" website will count. Microsoft will be donating $1.15 (their reported financial equivalent of eight meals) per download, to a maximum of $1,000,000. Feeding America is the leading domestic hunger-relief charity in the U.S and provides services for more than 25 million low-income individuals. They distribute 2 billion pounds of donated food per year.

New IE8 build available for program participants

Internet Explorer 8 beta participants today received a surprising e-mail about 'IE8 Partner Build' released to the IE8 Technical Beta to test and find issues. This build represents a preview of IE8's progress and is best used to verify issues fixed since releasing Beta 2. While Microsoft believes it to be of adequate quality for you to use, is not as extensively tested as a milestone build, so it is not meant for the general public but only for testing purposes. Microsoft is not providing any support for this build and henceforth just like in transition from Beta 1 to Beta 2, if you feel that Microsoft have resolved misfiled your bug, please re-activate the bug.
