27.05.2009Free Software Foundation releases GPL version 3
The Free Software Foundation
(FSF) today released version 3
of the GNU General Public
License (GNU GPL), the
world's most popular free
software license.
Since we founded the free
software movement, over 23
years ago, the free software
community has developed
thousands of useful programs
that respect the user's
freedom. The programs are in
the GNU/Linux operating
system, as well as personal
computers, telephones,
Internet servers, and more.
Most of these programs use the
GNU GPL to guarantee every
user the freedom to run,
study, adapt, improve, and
redistribute the program,
said Richard Stallman, founder
and president of the FSF.
Version 3 of the GNU GPL
strengthens this guarantee, by
ensuring that users can modify
the free software on their
personal and household
devices, and granting patent
licenses to every user. It
also extends compatibility
with other free software
licenses and increases
international uniformity. ..

10.05.2008Microsoft takes on the free world
Microsoft claims that
free software like Linux,
which runs a big chunk of
corporate America, violates
235 of its patents. It wants
royalties from distributors
and users. Users like you,
maybe.
Free
software is great, and
corporate America loves it.
It's often high-quality stuff
that can be downloaded free
off the Internet and then
copied at will. It's
versatile - it can be
customized to perform almost
any large-scale computing task
- and it's blessedly
crash-resistant.
A
broad community of developers,
from individuals to large
companies like IBM, is
constantly working to improve
it and introduce new features.
No wonder the business world
has embraced it so
enthusiastically: More than
half the companies in the
Fortune 500 are thought to be
using the free operating
system Linux in their data
centers.
But now
there's a shadow hanging over
Linux and other free software,
and it's being cast by
Microsoft. The Redmond
behemoth asserts that one
reason free software is of
such high quality is that it
violates more than 200 of
Microsoft's patents. And as a
mature company facing
unfavorable market trends and
fearsome competitors like
Google, Microsoft is pulling
no punches: It wants
royalties. If the company gets
its way, free software won't
be free anymore.

07.08.2006Microsoft offers free software to Louisiana SMBs
Microsoft is working with state officials in Louisiana to offer Windows and Office software free for a year to small businesses still feeling the
effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Microsoft on Monday unveiled a new program, called the Software License Relief Program,
in conjunction with the 2007 Hope & Recovery Summit, which is commemorating the second anniversary of both storms. Microsoft is working with the
Louisiana Small Business Development Center (LSBDC) to offer the program, which will launch next month and gives eligible small businesses access to
software from Microsoft, including Windows and Office, free of charge for a year.
The program doesn't come without a catch,
however -- there are eligibility requirements for businesses, one of which is to purchase a three-year Microsoft Open Value License that spreads out
software license payments over three years. Open Value bundles core software offerings from Microsoft into one license. After purchasing the software,
businesses can bring the first year's invoice to any LSBDC, and Microsoft will pay the bill. The businesses themselves are responsible for the last
two years of the license.

28.08.2007What's Cheaper: Free Software, Or Pirated Windows?
Ask anyone who regularly
downloads movies, software and
music without paying for any
of it. Ask them what they find
to be cheaper, Microsoft
Windows or Linux. If they
really think about it, theyll
tell you that Windows is
cheaper, because both of them
are free, and free Windows is
coming in at a huge
discount.
The fact of the matter is
that, in the home, software
piracy is rampant. Its why
software that sells to
businesses continues to grow
(Office, Adobe Creative Suite)
while games sales keep
dropping and Microsoft Works
is given away for free. So
many people use file sharing
networks, get copies from a
friend, or even buy $400
computers pre-loaded with
thousands of dollars of
software. They view it as a
way of life.
Dave
Gutteridge has a great article
titled Windows is
Free explaining how
Linux has a practically
impossible time competing with
Windows because anyone whod
switch on price can just
pirate Windows. For many home
users, Windows is as free as
Linux, and from a cost/benefit
position, Windows is
cheaper.

27.10.2005New open-source license
targets DRM, Hollywood
The new version of the most
widely used open-source
license takes a "highly
aggressive" stance against
the digital rights management
software that's widely
favored in the entertainment
industry, said Eben Moglen,
general counsel for the Free
Software
Foundation.
At
a two-day event here to launch
the General Public License
version 3, which governs use
of countless free and
open-source programs, Moglen
said the license includes
anti-DRM provisions that could
put it in conflict with movie
studios and even digital video
recorder maker
TiVo.
On Monday,
the Free Software Foundation
published a draft of the GPL
version 3, which is expected
to be completed in about a
year. The draft states that
GPL software cannot use
"digital restrictions" on
copyright material unless
users can control
them.
Moglen said
that DRM technology, which
places limits on how consumers
can play movies, music or
other digital content, is
"fundamentally incompatible"
with the principles of the
Free Software Foundation.
Moglen and Free Software
Foundation founder Richard
Stallman are co-authors of the

01.03.2007EFF launches campaign to free phones from software locks
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is asking for the public's help in its new campaign to free cell phones from the software locks. The
Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) is a U.S copyright law that prohibits circumventing anti-piracy measures that are built into commercial
software. Many cell phone manufacturers and service providers build software locks to protect their business models instead of copyrighted material.
Often users come up with ways to connect to a new service provider or run the software of their choice. But the threat of litigation under the DMCA
has made them adopt the options provided by the manufacturer without further questions.

28.01.2009I.B.M. to Offer Office Software Free in Challenge to Microsofts Line
I.B.M. plans to mount its most ambitious challenge in years to Microsofts dominance of personal computer software, by offering free programs for word

The company is announcing the desktop software, called I.B.M. Lotus Symphony, at an
event today in New York. The programs will be available as free downloads from the I.B.M. Web site.
I.B.M.s Lotus-branded
proprietary programs already compete with Microsoft products for e-mail, messaging and work group collaboration. But the Symphony software is a free
alternative to Microsofts mainstay Office programs Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The Office business is huge and lucrative for Microsoft, second only
to its Windows operating system as a profit maker.
