Windows Vista by August 31,

Last Tuesday, Microsoft announced that Gordon Mangione, the vice president of the Security Technology Unit, was leaving the company to pursue other interests. Mangione's departure comes at a critical time for a company that has seen several new updates to its product line, and is expecting many more with the upcoming release of Windows Vista. Even with Vista's crunch time rapidly approaching, Microsoft has not been shy about performing executive retooling.

In July, Ars reported on the trial of Kai-Fu Lee, a former vice president of Microsoft's Interactive Services Division, who was hired by Google and then sued by Microsoft for breaking his non-compete. Not only did Lee win the case, but he also tarnished Microsoft's reputation for organization when he portrays the company in a state of disarray, citing a lack of communication in product development centers and interoffice disputes.

Lee, who opened Microsoft's research lab in China in 1998 and moved to headquarters in Redmond, Wash., two years later, fretted over what he saw as repeated missteps. In court he detailed how the more than 20 product-development centers in China tripped over one another, duplicating efforts and even fighting over the same job candidate. Lee called the company "incompetent."

Since Lee's trial, Microsoft has been publicly revamping its management system through both words and actions...

Google, Microsoft spark interest in modular data centers, but benefits may be exaggerated

Interest in modular data centers is growing, fueled by high-profile endorsements from Microsoft and Google. But the model raises new management concerns, and efficiency claims may be exaggerated.

Modular, containerized data centers being sold by vendors such as IBM, Sun and Rackable Systems fit storage and hundreds, sometimes thousands of servers into one large shipping container with its own cooling system. (See photos in our related slide show.) Microsoft, using Rackable containers, is building a data center outside Chicago with more than 150 containerized data centers, each holding 1,000 to 2,000 servers. Google, not to be outdone, secured a patent last year for a modular data center that includes "an intermodal shipping container and computing systems mounted within the container."

Microsoft Settles on Sites for Search Centers in Europe

Faced with the question of whether to build its European search technology center in France, Germany or the U.K., Microsoft's answer is "all three," CEO Steve Ballmer said during an event in Paris on Thursday. Microsoft had been hinting since earlier this year that it would pick one of the three countries to build a research center to develop new search technologies.

However, Ballmer said the company will conduct the research in London, Munich and on the outskirts of Paris so as to be closer to customers and to attract the best staff. Ballmer was coy about how much the company will spend on the new search centers, saying only that it will recruit several hundred engineers to work in them.
