Microsoft Rebrandishes E-Commerce Chops With Commerce Server Plans

There's been speculation that Microsoft is on the way out of the e-commerce game as the company has been largely silent about the future of its Commerce Server product. Speculate no longer. In a broad outline of Commerce Server's future on Wednesday, Microsoft is declaring its intention to stay in the game in a big way.

"To answer speculation, yes, we are going to continue Commerce Server as a standalone product and brand," says Ryan Donovan, Microsoft's product unit manager for the Commerce Server and Web hosting product groups.

Microsoft, which released Commerce Server 2007 last summer, is announcing that the next major release of Commerce Server, currently code-named Commerce Server "7," will be available in 2010. In the interim, the company will release "accelerators," slated for release in the second half of 2008, to better integrate Commerce Server with other Microsoft products and to keep pace with competitors like IBM and Art Technology Group (ATG). Previously, Microsoft had focused only on big-bang releases for Commerce Server. ..

Microsoft Partners Question Commerce Server Roadmap

Microsoft this week provided details on the future of its Commerce Server product, but some partners said the announcement was heavy on form and light on substance.

Commerce Server 2007 includes tools for building end-to-end ecommerce applications and is one of Microsoft's most enigmatic products. Since launching Commerce Server 2007 last summer, Microsoft not only hasn't provided a roadmap, but has also shuffled the product within various internal groups.

Partners like the features that Commerce Server offers, but some say Microsoft's lack of a coherent marketing strategy around the offering has made it difficult to get customers excited.

Commerce Server is quickly becoming irrelevant in retail industry verticals, said a source who requested anonymity. "People don't even mention Commerce Server, it's not even part of their focus. It seems that maybe Microsoft doesn't see this as a big enough market," said the source. ..

EU welcomes autonomy plan for Internet governance

The European Commission welcomed on Monday U.S. government moves to make the company that manages Internet domain names independent by 2009, but said it would monitor the process carefully.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which controls addresses including ".com" and country domain names such as ".cn" for China, now reports to the U.S. Commerce Department.

On Friday, the Commerce Department said it would retain oversight for three more years, renewing an agreement that was scheduled to expire last weekend.

But a lighter regime was introduced, with ICANN no longer having to file reports with the Commerce Department every six months or having its work prescribed for it, the European Commission said.

Move to extend Internet tax ban stalls in Senate

An effort by U.S. lawmakers to extend a moratorium on state Internet access taxes has stalled amid a dispute over whether the ban should be permanent or temporary.

The Senate Commerce Committee canceled a planned vote on a bill on Thursday that would have extended the tax ban for at least four more years after a possible compromise on the issue fell through.

"I am disappointed that the Commerce Committee was unable to act on legislation to extend the Internet tax moratorium at today's (meeting)," Commerce Committee Chairman Sen. Daniel Inouye said in a statement.

Inouye said there would be further discussions to try and reach "a reasonable compromise."..

Office 14 to be named Microsoft Office System 2009?

Microsoft is currently developing the successor to Office 2007, Office codenamed "14". There has been little to no information on the upcoming Office version and many have speculated we might not see the product until 2010.
