New IBM supercomputer achieves petaflop

IBM has devised a new Blue Gene supercomputer--the Blue Gene/P--that will be capable of processing more than 3 quadrillion operations a second, or 3 petaflops, a possible record. Blue Gene/P is designed to continuously operate at more than 1 petaflop in real-world situations.

Blue Gene/P marks a significant milestone in computing. Last November, the Blue Gene/L was ranked as the most powerful computer on the planet: it topped out at 280 teraflops, or 280 trillion operations a second during continuous operation.

Put another way, a Blue Gene/P operating at a petaflop is performing more operations than a 1.5-mile-high stack of laptops. ..

Blue Screen of Death Survival Guide: Every Error Explained

Picture this: Its late at night, youre sitting at your computer playing a game or working on a project when, suddenly, Windows freezes completely. All your work is gone, and you find a blue screen full of gibberish staring back at you. Windows is dead, Jim, at least until you reboot it. You have no choice but to sigh loudly, shake your fist at Bill Gates and angrily push the reset button. Youve just been visited by the ghost of windows crashed: The blue screen of death.

Also known as the BSoD, the Blue Screen of Death appears when Windows crashes or locks up. Its actually a Windows śstopť screen, and is designed to do two things: tell you the reason for the error, and to calm your nerves, hence the use of the color blue (studies show it has a relaxing effect on people). Though Blue Screens are difficult to decipher, all the information you need to figure out what caused it is right there in front of you in blue and whiteand thats where we come in. Were going to show you how to dissect the blue screen error details, so you can fix the problem thats causing them.

True blue for OLED screens discovered

Blue, the color that has been holding back OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screen technology may be one giant step closer to production. Previously scientists were only able to reproduce red and green OLED's but had stumbled upon finding a material for true blue OLEDs. No longer is that the case as a group of researchers in Korea have claimed to have discovered the true blue OLED. This means that we will hopefully have consumer OLED products on the market sooner rather than later. Why is having OLED on the market important? OLED products have greater field of vision, better color quality and require less power. Overall it's a better value for the consumer and the environment.

Customers get a supercomputer on the cheap

IBM ratcheted the world of supercomputing up a few notches in June with the Blue Gene/P, a system nearly three times as fast as its predecessor at a cost of US$1.3 million per rack.

But in anticipation of the Blue Gene/P, IBM dropped the price of the Blue Gene/L, to about $800,000 late last year, prompting sales of the older supercomputer to more than double during the first half of this year compared to the second half of 2006, says Herb Schultz, IBM's deep-computing marketing manager.

At its highest price, the Blue Gene/Lcost $1.3 million per rack, same as the P's current price.

"It's still a very viable platform," Schultz says. Among universities, "we've had some really big sales." He named Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY and the State University of New York at Stony Brook as two new L-model customers...

Windows 7 Starter Edition details confirmed

As was reported here on Neowin, there was speculation that Microsoft were planning to remove the application limit on Windows 7 Starter Edition. According to The Windows Blog, Microsoft have confirmed that the "3 applications at a time" limit that hobbled earlier versions of the Starter Edition has been removed for Windows 7. Now the only effective limit on the number of programs you can run concurrently is set by the amount of your memory. Windows 7 Starter Edition will have other limits, however, in order to differentiate it from other versions of the OS. "Windows 7 Starter does not include: * Aero Glass, meaning you can only use the "Windows Basic" or other opaque themes.

Microsoft Launches Blue Monster Wine Label

It's ironic that, a couple of days after the head of Mozilla Europe castigated Microsoft's attitude to Open Source and innovation in a TechCrunch interview, Microsoft today launches its own-label wine designed to promote innovation inside the company.

The FT has the story today of how Brit blogger, cartoonist and ‘Marketing 2.0′ guy Hugh Macleod, and Steve Clayton, chief technology officer at Microsoft's UK Partner Group managed to convince the higher-ups that the Redmond giant had to start getting a bit groovier. Clayton has been at the forefront of the "Blue Monster" movement, which promotes a more open attitude to geeks and tech for Ballmer's baby. Steve uses the image on his business card and is the administrator of the Friends of Blue Monster Facebook group.

To this end they've created the Blue Monster Reserve, exclusively for Microsoft and its employees. I understand the pair also had some spiritual support from Microsoft's PR group Edelman, which committed to buying some bottles off Stormhoek. Microsoft is not bank-rolling the wine, but has given its approval for the label to go out. Alas, the wine will only be available to people who belong to the Friends of Blue Monster Facebook group, and geek dinners we're attending and/or sponsoring. Booo!

Microsoft invites hackers back for Blue Hat

On Wednesday, members of the hacking community willing to give Microsoft a hand arrived at Redmond, Washington, to show the software giant where it's gone wrong. This time the company's latest Blue Hat conference, typically held twice a year, targeted mobile security, hardware hacking, Microsoft's security tools, and the underground vulnerability economy. Microsoft began hosting these events two years ago as a way to foster dialogue between the company's security team and external security researchers, many of whom have been critical of the company's approach to security. The name Blue Hat derives from the Black Hat security conferences - the "Blue" part comes from the color of badges that Microsoft staffers wear on campus.

Blue Pill virtualisation rootkit freely available

Rootkit specialist Joanna Rutkowska has provided open access to the source code of a new version of the virtualisation rootkit Blue Pill, which has been rewritten from scratch. She presented a prototype of the rootkit at the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas in 2006.

The new version of Blue Pill has not just been revised, it also offers new functionality and, according to the description, relies on the virtualisation support offered by modern processors (HVM, hardware virtualised machines).

It is claimed that the new Blue Pill can migrate Windows into a virtual environment whilst it is running; without restarting, and invisibly to the user. This would make it undetectable from within the system using current detection methods. The rootkit supports AMD's SVM/Pacifica virtualisation to infiltrate a hypervisor into Windows whilst it is running, but is not yet able to utilise Intel's VT-x virtualisation. Blue Pill now also includes several functions specifically aimed at hindering recognition by rootkit detectors. It is apparently able to support nested hypervisors and to manipulate Time Stamp Clock Register (TSCR) readings to thwart detection of stolen CPU cycles: a technique known as RDTSC cheating. ..
