Windows Beat Unix, But it Won't Beat Linux
Opinion: Here's why the boys from Redmond aren't going to be able to pull it off. Twelve years ago, I oversaw a PC Magazine feature on Unix on Intel. My team and I reviewed at Unixes from Consensys, Dell, Interactive, SCO, Univel, Sun, and NeXT. We also looked at, but didn't review, Unixes from UHC, Microport and other companies most of you have never heard of.

16.10.2007Warnings of 'internet overload'
As the flood of data across
the internet continues to
increase, there are those that
say sometime soon it is going
to collapse under its own
weight. But that is what they
said last year.
Back
in the early 90s, those of us
that were online were just
sending text e-mails of a few
bytes each, traffic across the
main US data lines was
estimated at a few terabytes a
month, steadily doubling every
year. The mid 90s saw the
arrival of picture-rich
websites, and the invention of
the MP3. Suddenly each net
user wanted megabytes of
pictures and music, and the
monthly traffic figure
exploded.
But since
2003, we have seen a change in
the way we use the net. The
YouTube generation want to
stream video, and download
gigabytes of data in one go.
"In one day YouTube
sends data equivalent to 75
billion e-mails, so it's
clearly very different," said
Phil Smith, head of technology
and corporate marketing at
Cisco Systems.

17.06.2007Apple beats all competitors on reliability, support again
For the second year running, Apple Inc.'s computers are the most reliable, and its support is the most dependable of all computer makers selling

percentage of each vendor's support calls with its U.S. market share, said company CEO David Milman. Apple's Macs beat machines sold and
supported by Panasonic, Lenovo, Toshiba and Hewlett-Packard, according to Rescuecom Corp.'s third annual reliability report. Apple, which took the
top spot last year, more than doubled its score from 2007 and again trounced the competition, this year posting a score 43% higher than next-best
Panasonic Corporation of North America.

market share and Apple with 17.1 percent based on shipment volume worldwide.

08.11.2009First Look CorelDraw X4: Still the one to beat
Wolfgang Gruener: Corel is about to release a new version of its śDrawť graphics suite, which is one of the very few remaining complete graphics
suites on the market. Now in its 14th generation, it hasnt lost its original look and feel and remains the most convincing PC graphics product for
ambitious consumers and graphic artists.
Sometimes at the beginning of this decade, just when Corel went through a tough time,
the companys core product somehow lost its appeal. It was Draw that had made Corel famous in the early 90s and it was pretty much Draw that carried
the Ottawa-based firm through that decade. But, beginning with version 6, Draw became visibly bloated and Corel looked like it had lost its focus. I
personally felt the reasons for an upgrade to a new version were fading and that is why my most current Draw package in use is still v10 (released in
2000).
Version 14, in Corel language śX4ť, has made its way to the Gold Master disc a few weeks ago and I had a chance to take a
first look over the past week. Heres my impression.

Nathan Weinberg:

30.12.2008Psystar Continues to Battle Despite Apple Lawsuit
Adding another blow to the lawsuit brought on by Apple, Psystar has started making Leopard restore disks available at no extra cost to customers who
purchase Mac Clones from the company.
Psystar has received several comments and questions asking if they are still selling Mac clones -
their answer: "Definitely". Mac "Clones" sold by the company are a fraction of the price of Apple's machines, some as low as a quarter of the
price of an equivilent "authentic" Mac. The company claims the difference is caused by Apple marking the cost of Mac hardware up by 80%.
Will Apple be able to beat Psystar? At the moment, it's looking fairly unlikely (they are still pulling the copyright card - which an Antitrust
ruling (which, coincidentally, Apple are attempting to challenge) voided). Either way, it looks like it's going to be a very long game of cat and
mouse.

15.08.2008Report: Apple stores' Mac sales beat PC stores by 10-to-1
An average Apple retail outlet easily outperforms its generic counterpart in terms of revenue and sales -- but the expense of supporting all those
customers may be pulling Apple down, says a new investment note from Bernstein Research.
Senior analyst Toni Sacconaghi expresses
surprise at the numbers in the report, which observes that the typical Apple retail location sells about 21.4 Macs every day versus "less than 2"
for many less specialized electronics shops. This amounts to about 8,000 Macs per store per year and played a crucial role in expanding the Mac's
appeal: about two-thirds of store revenues came from the computers and likely earned Apple the lion's share of its converts.
"We estimate that the stores, which collectively represent just 2.5% of the Mac's global distribution points, drove more than one third of its
market share gain during the year," Sacconaghi says.

Observers have been expecting a significant revamp to
Apple's iPod lineup, especially after
the release of the iPhone in all of its touch-screen glory. So when Apple announced today's special eventas we predictedwith the tagline "The beat

Apple CEO Steve Jobs began by announcing that Apple had distributed over 600 million copies of
iTunes, that the iTunes Store is the top online music store in 21 countries, and that Apple has sold 95 million TV shows so far.

25.05.2007Is Microsoft the juggernaut of yore?
If you were to ask the average citizen to describe Microsoft they would probably tell you that they are a mega-corporation whose main product is
Windows. Depending on their age they may also describe the company as one that has a monopoly on many software genres and is anti-competitive.
During the 90s and even in to the early 2000s Microsoft dominated the home computer landscape. The typical user wrote their documents in Microsoft
Office, on top of a Windows XP platform while browsing in IE 6. They were so dominant, in fact, that they were ruled as being anti-competitive in
Europe in 2004. In 2000, Microsoft had a market share of about 87% and today this figure remains unchanged.
