Microsoft is 30 years old today! have a look at the Microsoft Timeline
It's hard to believe that Microsoft is already 30 years old. The company that made Redmond, Washington, a household name was actually founded in 1975 in another city by two young Seattle men, one of whom was a college dropout. From this inauspicious beginning came an equally improbable vision: A personal computer on every desk and in every home. Thirty years later, it seems so obvious. But at the time, when only a handful of people knew what a personal computer was, it was a great leap of faith and daring.

05.08.2008The right time to assess Windows Vista's performance
Nick White: Measuring the performance of an operating system is a tricky thing. At the same time, it's the right and necessary thing to do, because
performance is one of many criteria important to customers. Part of the trick of measuring performance is to time testing execution with the product
cycle such that the results are as meaningful as possible for customers; this helps them make a better decision by making use of the full array of
available information. As one example, about a year ago we commissioned a firm called Principled Technologies to
conduct a study comparing Windows XP
SP2 to Windows Vista RTM. That study found the performance measures of the two operating systems were within the same range for many tasks that home
and business users frequently perform under real-world conditions.
My point is that we waited to conduct these benchmarking tests
until Windows Vista had reached the RTM milestone in the product cycle, as this allowed us to provide our customers the most meaningful data available
at the time -- the data most likely to directly affect their decision to upgrade to Windows Vista. We do a whole range of performance tests at every
stage of the OS development process, but, as a general rule, we avoid sharing benchmark tests of software that hasn't gone RTM (i.e., final code).
This explains why we have not to date published any findings of benchmark tests (nor commissioned anyone to do so) on performance improvements brought
about by Windows Vista SP1. Publishing benchmarks of the performance of Windows Vista SP1 now wouldn't be a worthwhile exercise for our customers,
as the code is still in development and, to the degree that benchmarking tests are involved, remains a moving target.

lot of challenges ahead. We've got our work cut out for us." Lu, former executive vice president of engineering for the Search and Advertising
Technology Group at Yahoo, is the latest in a series of several high-profile Yahoo search executives who've left the struggling search giant for
Microsoft.

01.12.2007Next up: A Microsoft-Google antitrust fight?
Microsoft's Yahoo bid is over, but the aftermath might prove just as interesting. And it looks like Google could play a significant role.
During its tussle with Microsoft, Yahoo tested
a
search-related advertising alliance with Google in an attempt to boost its profits and fend off Microsoft's unsolicited offer. Under the
arrangement, ads from Google's lucrative system were delivered alongside Yahoo search results. Microsoft, itself no stranger to antitrust problems,
objected to even the hint of a
longer-term deal -- saying that such an agreement would "consolidate over 90% of the search advertising market in Google's hands," and adding
that it would assess its options closely.

12.08.2008Microsoft Unveils New Tools to Fight Security Threats
Speaking yesterday at the Black Hat Security Conference in Las Vegas, Microsoft has now introduced a new group of security related programs that share
advanced information with partners about upcoming security threats.
As many in the tech industry know, within hours, and sometimes minutes
of monthly security patches being released, exploits are already booming for the security holes fixed by these updates. The Microsoft Active
Protections Program (MAPP) will allow security software providers to provide protection to their customers quickly and effectively.
"The
introduction of these new programs helps address evolving online threats and provides more practical guidance to assess and manage risk," said Andrew
Cushman, director of security response and outreach at Microsoft. "In the race between exploit and protection, Microsoft is committed to shifting the
advantage to the security industry. The Microsoft Active Protections Program gives security software providers the information and resources they need
to help better protect customers."
Along with the MAPP, Microsoft also plans to roll out its new Exploitability Index in October of 2008.
The Exploitability Index will allow providers to determine what exploit is more dangerous and allow them to prioritize the security releases to their
customers.

05.08.2008Feb. launch set for new Windows Server 2008, Vista SP1 tools
Ahead of its launch of Windows Server 2008 and Vista SP, Microsoft is planning to ship in late February assessment tools for IT shops so they can get
their networks in order and ease any planned migrations. The Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Solution Accelerator is designed to help IT shops
inventory their network, assess the readiness of their infrastructure for a migration and generate reports and recommendations.
The tool is
for users planning migrations to Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Office 2007 and Microsoft Virtualization technologies (Virtual Server 2005 R2 and
the forthcoming Hyper-V), and Microsoft Application Virtualization (formerly SoftGrid). Baldwin Ng, of the Microsoft assessment and planning team
wrote in a Jan. 26 posting on the MAP blog that the assessment tool would be released on the Web in approximately four weeks. A
beta program is already under way.
